Why Do You Continue to Map?

Do you do it because "Osu needs more of X artist"? Or is it to make a 'good' map? To meet other people?

Personally, I do it because of a mix of the first two reasons. A fair bit of the music I like isn't really mapped at all (even graveyard), and I want to make a 'good' map of a song that does it justice.

I was considering making a post of the same topic, but I wondered of it would just be ego posting if it came from me lol

I think the original reason of "I map for some creative reason" or "to express my fav song in some way" still applies to me today. not anymore the reason for "I want to share an unpopular music" since a lot of people have started to map this artist, and they're good I'll admit.

specifically, I have a project, a journey of mapping 28 songs which are special to me. these are the songs from yorushika's duo album "That's Why I Gave Up on Music" and "Elma", which bring song-to-song, and even album-to-album relationships and storytelling to a really high level. everything. even the red line hell piano instrumentals. even if it takes me to over 7* stars of mapping once and 2* on another.

my goal is not just to map these 28 songs, but also to translate that song-to-song relationship into mapping, and ultimately retell the story of the two albums through mapping. as far as I'm concerned, anyone else just slaps on a similar difficulty name and calls it related. but I want to see how far this can be pushed. "how many references can I make across mapsets in terms of patterns? gameplay elements? combo color habits? how can mapping styles express what the song is trying to express in relation to other songs in the 2 albums?"

I believe there's value in doing this, even if I don't rank my stuff. it's something not really done in osu!, and it's also a way for me to explore my values and skills in making things like this. if someone can enjoy this two hours worth of gameplay and take something away, then I would be successful.

when I finish this project, I will quit osu! period. this is the only thing that caused me to return to osu! after almost half a year of inactivity, and since my return in the span of 2 months, I finished 2 new maps and 1 in-progress map, making for 3 more finished maps, 2 of which I cannot upload at the moment.

currently, 12/28 of the maps are finished. some I cannot yet upload due to sub limit :P

here's my progress of you wanna know

because i like mapping? when ever i listening to music, i always had mapping imagination in my mind (like i map the song in real time in my mind lol). and also i've goals in my mind, what i want to achieve in mapping.

Before, I mapped solely for fame and Ranked status.
After experiencing the struggle on ranking, I changed my intent and view.

Now, I only map to create maps that accurately represent the songs that I like and can satisfy me in my own way.

i can't describe the best words of why and i don't really had goals (because my music taste were anything goes to begin with)

i just can't stop thinking abt ideas and implement it even though it'll be bad
Maybe the best way to put it is to express the songs i mapped
Livermorium
i map when i want to

Well, I started because I knew there were a lot of amazing artists that haven't been represented in the community yet. Currently, it's just because I find it calming and quite fun. Of course I've always wanted a ranked map, to have the better or best players in the game play it, that's what I've dreamt for, for the past 5 1/2 years nearly, but doesnt everyone?

i map for fun. i enjoy mapping songs that i like, and want others to enjoy playing.

I continue to map since I aim to carry on pushing out maps for songs that I deem underrated in the community, mainly ones that I think deserve more attention for what said song is worth — one of my aims for pushing ranked maps is to try and rank songs I think would pose a good spot in the section along with adding more variety to the same category of maps, be it in song choice or the chart itself.

Other than trying to rank "unique" songs though, I just map whatever I want pretty much.

i want fame

jk the reason why i continue to map is because i like showing how i feel like about the songs that i enjoy in a game that i enjoy

sometimes idk because I never manage to finish anything. But I want to make more of the kind of maps that I like, and give songs I like cool maps. though I also haven't finished maps for exactly this reason; if I can find something wrong with it, I wont upload it or force my self to map the rest just to finish and usually opt to just map a new song If I think I'd need to remap too much to fix it.

Yeah, I have this same problem. I have soooo many maps I haven't uploaded because I just don't like them or I found out there's something I've been missing

mostly just because i enjoy improving without all the grinding that osu std has to offer, plus i have more goals for osu mapping than std
Aurorance
because I like the song so much
and I want other people enjoy both of the song and my mapping style
mapping is kinda frustrating especially when you want to make a ranked map, but idk why there's a motivation behind me telling me to keep making maps

yeah and mapping is kinda like studying, you learn, discuss with other mappers which looks kinda fun

First of all mapping is fun, I've played so many great rhythm game but i can't make my own map to play since most of them are not community-driven. Most of the time I port songs from other rhythm games to this game. Contrast to those VSRGs, osu! (particularly std) is a game that you can be creative in mapping from hit circle placement to slider shapes.

creating something that expresses songs you like is pretty nice

for me personally at least the mentioned "introducing new artists to osu" is a notable factor as well
