How is Apple and Android similar?

The basic functions in iOS and Android are alike. Both the iOS and Android phones have calling, messaging, web browsing, video chat, maps, voice commands etc. ... There is a status bar on both the iOS and Android devices and it offers similar information such as battery life, time, app notifications, wifi etc.

Is an iPhone and a smartphone the same thing?

Technically, there's absolutely no difference between an iPhone and a smartphone. Because any handheld device with a touchscreen interface capable of performing most of the functions of a computer and with a running operating system is considered a smartphone.

Differences between IOS and Android
iOS is a closed system whereas Android is more open. Users have barely any system permissions in iOS but in Android, users can customize their phones easily.
Android software is available for many manufacturers such as Samsung, LG etc. and this may lead to some quality problems in the cheaper phones. However, iOS is strictly controlled by Apple and there is no quality problem as there are few models.
The Android applications are obtained from Google Play while iOS applications are available in the Apple app store.
Integration with other devices is better in Apple iOS as compared to Google Android.
There are different voice assistants for iOS and Android namely Siri and Google Assistant. Google assistant is much more powerful than Siri.
The running speed of iOS devices remains consistent with time. In contrast to this, the performance of Android devices may decline over time.

Which is better Android or Apple?

Premium-priced Android phones are about as good as the iPhone, but cheaper Androids are more prone to problems. Of course, iPhones can have hardware issues, too, but they're overall higher quality. ... Some may prefer the choice Android offers, but others appreciate Apple's greater simplicity and higher quality

How is the design on the iPhone different
The most basic difference between android and iOS app design for the button styles is that the buttons in iOS apps follow the flat design pattern, so consequently, support the title case. However, the best Android app design follows Material Design so inherently they possess uppercase with buttons styled with shadow.

Try using projects using AOSP (Android Open-Source Project), like GrapheneOS and CalyxOS (Both of which are Google Pixel compatible). Maybe even Lineage (Which I think is Linux based).

Android is based.

I know a friend who broke his iPhone(knowingly) when he got it as a gift.

The phones that ship with iOS ship with one proprietary OS (with open source components). Android phones have the manufacturer's version of AOSP, which is unfortunately proprietary. In a previous post on this thread, I recommended AOSP projects. Now, I only recommend Graphene and Lineage as your options (if you want to use a phone still). I was also thinking of not getting a new phone once mine craps out.
