It's a 2D version of the 3DS. $129.99. Will release alongside Pokemon X/Y. Discuss.

Warrants its own thread because I know some of you have been waiting for a redesign with a lower price and won't necessarily check the 3DS thread all the time. Here you are! :)

A good, cheaper alternative to people without an N3DS and was thinking about buying one - of course, for those that don't care for the 3D-effects like me.
I think it'll sell well. =)

Looks a little awkward to hold though.

Edit: Yeah, I've come across a lot of people who say it's ugly. But if you don't care about the 3D and want to save a little money, who cares? (imo anyway)

Soon after X/Y comes out there'll likely be a lot of 2DS's floating around so nobody should feel lonely. :P

They're not bringing out some form of deal with X/Y, are they (I know you said it's getting released alongside it... but...)?
I'm not 'really' interested in X/Y, but that's not for discussion on this thread.

Am I the only one who doesn't care for the 3D effect on any game I play?
Maybe i'm the only one that doesn't care for the 3D, but still like the games for the system.

Also while I can't say I care about the 3D I do care about being able to fold in and out my game, and the 2DS lacks that.. Still I already has the 3DS so no point in buying it.

Way beyond me what made them think this design choice was a good idea

Getting rid of the 3D gimmick (and whatever else they got rid of, not really going to look into it) for a lower pricetag makes sense and I can appreciate that, but why make it butt ugly and most probably incredibly uncomfortable to hold and use?
Lanturn
Wii U Controller for the 3DS is what I see XD

It would probably be more comfortable to hold instead of the standard 3DS as that thing is puny. I don't really like how it gets fatter near the top of it, and how it is much skinnier at the bottom

Well when I first saw the 2ds i laughed; HARD. Also here are 3 reasons why its both cheaper and less desirable
1. The 2 screens, well, their actually just one giant touchscreen seperated by the plastic (with plastic over the top screen to stop it messing with the bottom one)
2. Its flipping GIGANTIC!!! Its impossible to fit it into your pocket
3. It doesn't have the iconic ds and 3ds trait of folding meaning its pretty much a new handheld console offshoot entirely!
XPJ38
The more I think about it, the more I understand Nintendo. This console is, at least I think so, addressed to (1) children: no 3D so parents are less worried about their children's eyes, and no hinges so no hinge damage, and (2) people who play at home: bulky and non-foldable but probably more ergonomic and comfortable. In short, young casual gamers who don't want to spend much money on a new console, and looks like the 2DS is perfect for them.

Now, is this target large enough to be profitable for Nintendo? And why didn't they remove the useless double camera to make their console even cheaper? They removed the stereo speaker for a mono one but kept the cameras, I am puzzled ._.
AstralPhnx
What also puzzles me is why did they keep the 2 cameras on the back for 3d pictures when the 2ds CAN'T DISPLAY 3D?!? I mean if you were to buy a 2ds it would be because you don't have a 3ds. Sheesh nintendo, cut costs even more and tweak the firmware a little to remove 3d photos on the 2ds and remove the second camera at the back!
blissfulyoshi
Some games use the 2 cameras, so to keep game compatibility, both cameras need to be there.

I've never held it (obviously), but it looks pretty uncomfortable. The totally flat surface seems like it could cause hand pain and cramps after an hour.

The price point is attractive, but I doubt anybody has pockets large enough to carry the 2DS, If you're going to take away the portable aspect than what's the point? (This is more personal opinion though, as I would much rather play on a console if given the choice at home.)

The general consensus among most game journalists is that it's comfy.

As for the portability comment... Out of curiosity, were you an owner of the original GameBoy? There's a reason the GB Pocket was made... Back then most of us just put the damn thing in a bag. Hell, I often just carried it with me and left it in the car when needed. That is undoubtedly what kids will do with their 2DS's when they go off to play Pokemon X/Y with their buddies.

I'll buy one if it is significantly cheaper than the 3ds. Otherwise I will just get a 3ds for the hell of it.

It's $129.99 without any sales. 3DS is $169.99, XL is $199.99. It'll probably have crazy Black Friday deals, though.

Actually, the only handheld I've ever owned was the 3DS, which I got just a few months ago. Coming from a family that's really strict on games, the only experiences I've had playing portable games when I was a kid were secretly playing on emulators on my computer :(

Soo, it's a bit hard for me to relate (not to mention the GB came out 7 years before I was born– it would have been more likely that I'd have gotten the SP ). But yeah, you make a good point. Kids will tolerate it, but I doubt any middle/high school students and those working would get this. Even some elementary school have iphones and stuff nowadays and value portability. Times have changed..

See, I've seen kids with 3DS's. Not a single one of them stored it in their pocket. That's why I'm confident in saying that most kids won't care that it doesn't fit in their pocket.

As for older people... They can just get a 3DS (XL). This product isn't aimed too much at them, though they can certainly get one if they wish.
mm201
Maybe the second camera is needed for AR.
Pipayon
Mono audio. That'll suck. But that's the only thing.

But still stereo with headphones.

Actually, when I saw it a few days ago it wasn't disabled. Guess it was getting a lot of negative feedback?
Kemdo
Don't really like the idea of the 2ds... Seems like a real waste of money... Would rather get a 3ds ;L

Irreversible
The 3d effect can be cool, but I'm not a real fan of it e.e they should have produced a 2DS earlier, since I barely use the 3d effect :/ maybe would've bought it then.
Valundraal
Great alternative to the 3DS if you don't have the money, don't like the 3D effects, and is more durable for children. I think it's getting some undeserved hate.

It had 20k dislikes 10k likes.

The vid had over 2mil views at that point.

It's not noteworthy. Historically, this sort of thing has meant nothing in terms of sales.. It's views that matter more with things by big companies.

I'm convinced that xbox one sales will take a hit after all the overwhelmingly negative feedback, and would have taken even more damage if they never reversed the policies.

In this example though, the viewers (mostly hardcore gamers "in the know", I would guess if they saw the video in only a few days after it was put up) are probably not the target audience, so it means very little in terms of the sales of the produce.
FrzR
Some people say that its for children in which their eyes don't support 3D. lol

But others also say, that its a good door stopper.

I'm not sure if it works the same as the 3ds, or better. :I
quiz-chan_DELETED
wasting money on such an invention is nonsensical
Azure_Kite
Not for people that already have a 3DS, no.

3DS: 3 dimensions, $170, $56.67/dimension
2DS: 2 dimensions, $130, $65/dimension

I think the numbers speak for themselves.

The more expensive the product is the higher quality it is. Therefore, since the 2DS costs more per a dimension it is the superior product, but XL still win the price/dimension war by like $1.

I am using the logic Beats by Dre users use and those are well known to be worth the money so there is nothing wrong with this logic. :)

I can understand why Nintendo made this. But it's still a whole disappointment. They didn't even really raised the battery life. And it may be pretty cormfy, but I still don't think it's that good to actully play. I liked the Start and Selext buttons of the 3DS.
Destiny
I see it as a cheaper alternative for parents to buy their younger children, since the clam shell design is fragile in the hands of a kid. What kid needs 3D anyway?
mm201
I rather hate the 3DS's Start/Select design. They're really hard to push. DSPhat had the best Start/Select.

http://nintendo1ds.com/ Not sure if this is fake or not, but I'm posting it anyway.

EDIT: It's fake, but it's still rather funny.

Agreed.
I've said, openly, that it's a good idea and most of the time I get 'Seriously...?' or something like that.
Not a single person outside this forum, that I know of, think it's a good idea.
Maybe I'm just too optimistic.

Yeah, I think I mentioned to someone a while ago that it looks more durable (not even the best word... just it's not really two pieces).
It's great for the younger audience. Heck, I'm 23 and I don't care for the 3D either.

I'm not a fan of the Start/Select either. Home button belongs there, other two don't... really.

Man, so many people are going to eat so much crow in a few months...

Whether they like it or not, this thing is probably going to sell pretty well.
