I've heard of this and haven't really seen anything about it. Is it safe to do so? Will removing the tip and leaving it open potentially damage the pen?

It wont damage it but why would you remove it?

Whenever my pen hit the tablet, it would freeze the cursor for a bit and it would get really annoying. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about the pen hitting the tablet by accident since I hold it fairly low.

you can always disable the mouse keys, and no it won't damage your pen. You can use the nib remover that came with the tablet to take it out to prevent damage on the nib.
