It seems like I've been stuck on 4-star maps forever now and that I'm not really improving. maybe I'm not challenging myself but do your hands just magically get faster or something? I've played more in the last 3 months than I ever have consistently but I'm still stuck on the same difficulty as I was before these 3 months.

You need to push yourself by playing harder maps. Going up a third of a star until your comfortable playing at that level then repeat. Learning new skills also helps a lot. Refining and becoming proficient in those skills at your current level. And most importantly play more and have fun.

well it seems that you don't play much, that might be what's causing your slow improvement.

I mean look at my play history, only one of the months is below 1k plays.

Ok so the basic advice that every gives all the time for improvement is "play more". However you are asking for the science so ill give you a brief idea of what differentiates good players from bad ones from a scientific perspective. The key difference is that good players have both a physical difference in their hands and in their brains.

For the brain, you build up a thicker layer on myelin for neurons used to play osu every time you play the game. For the body, your muscle fibers adapt to the strain put on them and grow stronger. Both of these processes require playing the game as well as resting and recovering.

The best way to improve is to play more but to also to maximize the recovery process as well where myelin is formed and muscles grow. This means that things that boost health like exercise, good nutrition and good sleep all make a difference to become better faster.

Your skill does not only increase vertically (in raw physical difficulty aka star rating) but also in terms of pattern reading, dealing with rhythmical complexity etc. etc.
So while you may feel that you're "stuck" at 4*, if you think about it carefully you will probably still find out that you have been improving in some ways that are not as obvious in terms of SR/PP.
They will still help you out later on when playing 5* maps because the complexity and reading only get harder there as well.
For most people "mastering" 4* maps takes an incredible long amount of time because it is the first range of star rating that truly has a ton of diversity in styles. I have more than twice your playtime and I still have a bunch of 4* maps in my top plays and there is still a good amount of 4* maps that I can't perform well on.
So don't give up yet, skill progression in osu! is certainly a marathon and at times you'll be unable to feel yourself get closer to the goal cause it's so far away.
