Yes, I'm not very sure to play correctly at Osu!mania (I'm a 2 stars player).
More exactly, I hear everywhere how it's important to watch the middle of screen to play correctly.
But I'm not sure to do that correctly.

Where I try to watch generally:

Where I'm watching when there are jackings:

(Btw sorry for my english, I haven't written in English for a very long time)

Try using skin.ini and changing positions of Combo and Judgements, change them so they're in center of the screen or a bit higher, and you will need to look at it, but focus on the play. Trick is, you need to LOOK at combo and catch notes with your peripheral view. If you try to watch at the playfield with nothing to stick you attention to, you're either not gonna look at it properly, or your eyes will stick to the nearest notes and slide all the way down, and constantly jumping from row to row is painful. That's just how our eyes work.

People make a big deal out of where to look on the screen but it literally makes no difference. As long as your eyes aren't bouncing around you'll be fine. Where you look is all preference.

As NeroOtter said, it is better to have something to stick to (in this case the combo), I do not recommend playing without staring at something, playing in this way can make you not read the notes correctly.

You can stare at something that can catch your attention, for me, score is what I will pay attention to, you can adjust the scoreposition to around 90 to 150 maybe, or any position you are comfortable with. If you are more focused on your combo then use it instead of score.

doesn't really matter as long as it works imo

lmao i play like this

i follow the notes down until i go too far down and snap back up to somewhere near the top (naturally, my combo and judgements are pretty far down so they're out of the way)

only big problems i have are with patterns that make it difficult to jump up to the right place (i.e. ones that look the same vertically, like jumptrills and longjacks) where i often fall behind or rush too fast

after talking to lots of people though, it does seem like i'm in the minority on this one, so it might just be best to stick with gluing your eyes to one place (or try both maybe)
