The music is 4 mins long but I mapped it to have 2:38 drain time. Is it possible to shorten the mp3 files from the osu client or do I have to do some weird editing shambooglery magic without changing the beatmap?

you have to use an audio editing program to do this, as it's not possible on the current editor alone. there's audacity that is pretty good, however if you don't want to use it due to some drama as of lately, you can use free DAWs too, like reaper
