I'm sure I'm not the only one who has encountered this problem, but I'd like to take a name that is currently owned by a restricted account. Because of how restriction works, we don't know how long ago it was, how long ago they recently played on their restricted account or even if they had more than 10 plays on their account. This is a bit of an annoyance at worst but it's still something that seems like an oversight.

The current osu! naming policy says that accounts can have their name taken through a bunch of different situations (which includes a fancy graph and plenty of rules) which is why it seems like a bit of an oversight to have the currently rules not have anything for restricted accounts' names.

I could only think of a few downsides, but they are likely easy to fix through simple solutions anyway. Things like cheaters coming back and having their original names, or the new account owners having the "history" of the cheater behind them. These are things very easily taken on a case by case basis.

I think a second look at this issue would open a ton of names up for the community, especially because most of the people banned a long time ago likely have rarer names than most.

Restricted users can already have their names taken just like normal users and the inactivity requirements for taking their names are actually reduced. This is mentioned in a comment in the osu! website's code, which you can find here. Not sure if it is mentioned on the wiki or anywhere else though.

Many restricted users still play the game and restrictions are temporary, so just outright being able to immediately take the name of any restricted account is not going to happen.

If a username is going to become available within the next 180 days, the remaining time left is listed on the name change store page when you enter it in. If it says the name is unavailable and doesn't list a specific number, you're likely better off just thinking of a different name (this applies to both restricted and unrestricted users).
