Hello, and welcome to the third edition of Mania Beginner’s Showdown!

A lot of major tournaments are geared towards highly skilled players, often not giving any chance nor enjoyment to more modest and still growing players. This tournament aims to provide a sparring ground for those players and potentially a stepping stone for promising players for their future tournament life, as a healthy tournament environment can be incredibly encouraging for personal improvement!

Mania Beginner’s Showdown 3 will focus on the 10k to 40k range (4K ranking). More rank ranges will be considered for future and separate tournaments.

This tournament will feature mappools that cater more to a lower ranked subset of players.
You must be between rank 10k and 40k on the 4K ranking to qualify as a participant.
To find your 4k ranking as opposed to your global ranking, hover over your global ranking on your profile and it should showcase your 4K and your 7K ranking.

Below is how it should look like when finding your 4K ranking.

Update: the high limit has been arbitrarily set at 4750pp (4k), representing the approximate state of 10K at the end of registration. This should be easier and less stressful to reason about, not having to deal with decaying.

You must join our Discord server in order to receive notifications from us and communicate for the tournament.
You must also confirm your registration on the MBS3 website.

Skill and ranking requirements
  1. You have to match the 10K-40K ranking during the tournament signup phase. Failure to comply with the ranking regulation during the signup phase and the qualification stage will disqualify you from the tournament. After the qualification stage has concluded, this ranking requirement will not be in effect.
  2. Hosts reserve the right to deny players who are deemed as ‘sandbagging’ from participating. This is a case-by-case judgement made by the hosts. Loosely, sandbagging can be defined as having excess ability compared to the average expected skill of the tournament’s target demographic.

Participation requirements
  1. Player must have not violated the osu! community rules in the past 12 months. This will be verified through screening by osu! staff, despite this tournament not being badged.
  2. Because this tournament is not badged, referees are allowed to participate in the tournament.
  3. Tournament hosts reserve the right to disqualify players based on behavioral offenses. Repeated behavioral offenses towards any staff member, player, or spectator in either the match multiplayer lobby, the tournament discord server, or the official Twitch channel will lead to an official ban from the tournament.

Tournament structure
This tournament is a 1v1 tournament: matches will feature 2 players fighting against each other.
This tournament is played in Score v2: under no circumstances will Score v1 be utilized for any reason.
No SV picks will be featured in this tournament: this is due to SV balance being difficult for the skill demographic.

Round overview
Each tournament round will have a mappool of a size dependent on the current round and two tiebreakers. The Qualification Stage will not have a winning condition. The format is as follows:

Group Stage
BO7, 1 ban, 1 protect

Round of 64 (if applicable)
BO7, 1 ban, 1 protect

Round of 32
BO7, 1 ban, 1 protect

Round of 16
BO9, 1 ban, 1 protect

Quarterfinals
BO9, 1 ban, 1 protect

Semifinals
BO11, 1 ban, 1 protect

Finals
BO11, 1 ban, 1 protect

Grand finals
BO11, 1 ban, 1 protect

Qualification process
  1. All players that enter the tournament will be eligible to play in the qualification stage. Players who will advance to the next stage will be cut down to the nearest power of 2, examples are listed below:
    1. If 32 players enter, all 32 players will qualify and no one gets eliminated.
    2. If 33 players enter, the worst-performing player gets eliminated and the top 32 will advance to the next round.
    3. If 49 players enter, the 17 worst-performing players get eliminated and the top 32 will advance to the next round.
    4. If 63 players enter, the 31 worst-performing players get eliminated and the top 32 will advance to the next round.
    5. If 64 players enter, all 64 players will qualify and no one gets eliminated.
    6. If 127 players enter, the 63 worst-performing players get eliminated and the top 64 will advance to the next round.
  2. The qualification stage will have 4 maps that varies in skillsets tested, all created by the map selectors and will be unreleased prior to the qualification stage.
    1. Stage 1: Technical rice/accuracy
    2. Stage 2: Long notes
    3. Stage 3: Hybrid (a mix of rice and long note patterns)
    4. Stage 4: Hard rice
  3. All players will play the qualifier maps in the designated stage order. Every participant needs to play each map fully at least once to be able to advance.
  4. All players will have two chances at each qualifier map, in which the highest score of the two will be used to calculate your final score.
  5. Players will be organized in groups of up to 8 players playing in any given block.
  6. After all qualification stages have been concluded, players will be seeded in accordance to their average ranking across all four qualification maps.

Group Stage
  1. After the qualification stage, the players who have qualified will be divided into 4 different groups based on their qualification seed. The labels are as follows: “Top Seed”, “High Seed”, “Low Seed”, and “Bottom Seed”. Groups are then formed by a random selection of players from each seed.
  2. Each player in their given group will compete against each other once, for 3 matches in total. Two of the best-performing players in their group will advance to the bracket stage and the remaining two players will be eliminated from the tournament.
  3. Performance will be based on these metrics, from highest priority to lowest:
    1. Number of matches won.
    2. Number of rounds won subtracted by numbers of rounds lost.
    3. Number of losses by default.
    4. Higher qualification seeding.

Bracket Stage
Provisional bracket seeding strategy

  1. The bracket stage is a double elimination stage. This means that a player who is participating in this stage must lose two matches in this stage to be eliminated from the tournament.
  2. In a winners bracket match, the player who meets the winning condition in a match will be declared the winner of the match and will move further into the bracket. The loser of the match will fall into the losers bracket.
  3. In a losers bracket match, the player who meets the winning condition in a match will be declared the winner of the match and will move further into the bracket. The loser of the match will be eliminated from the tournament.
  4. Players who are in the winners bracket are required to play in one match in each stage. The only exception to this is if the player is the sole player in winners bracket in the Grand Finals stage, where the player is required to play in up to two matches if the player were to lose his first match in the Grand Finals stage.
  5. Players who are in the losers bracket are required to play in two matches in a single stage. However, players who lose their first match in the losers bracket in those stages will no longer need to play in any further matches in the tournament, for they are eliminated from the tournament.

Tournament organization
Protocol
  1. Your matches will be listed in a schedule list which you will be notified by one of the hosts in the announcement channel of the Discord server. Schedules will be released week-by-week, and matches will only happen during the weekends.
  2. Reschedules will only be considered if both players agree to a time, this needs to be done and properly notified to the tournament staff in the reschedules channel before Wednesday at 23:59 UTC+0 in the given week when your match should take place. You may reschedule your match outside of the weekends as a last resort.
  3. Rooms with matches will be created 10 minutes before the match start time, and you will be invited to the corresponding tournament room before the start time by your designated referee.
  4. If your match starts in less than 5 minutes and you have not been invited to your multiplayer lobby, please notify any staff member who is available that you currently do not have an invitation to your match.
  5. Players will be given a 10 minute grace period after the match start time to enter the room. Failure to enter after this grace period will forfeit your match and the player who is in the lobby will win by default.
In the extreme circumstance where both players do not show up in time the player with the higher qualifier seed in the match-up will advance.

Warm-ups
  1. Each player will be allowed one warm-up map to be played before the match commences. All warm-ups must be osu!mania 4K specific maps and must be uploaded to the osu! website.
  2. Warm-up maps must have a drain time of 4 minutes or less.
  3. Referees of the designated match-up will ask 30 minutes before the match starts to send your decided warm-up.

Bans, Protects, Rolls, and Song Selection
  1. With the exception of warm-ups, all songs played in a given round must match those that are selectable in the corresponding mappool. Maps are to be played on a restrictive FreeMod: only Mirror, Hidden, Fade In, or Flashlight can be used.
  2. Players are to ban one (1) map within the map pool that they are playing for the given round.
  3. Players are to protect one (1) map from being banned within the map pool that they are playing for the given round.
  4. Players will be instructed to do a !roll command by the referee that is overseeing the match; the winning roll picks the first protected map, the losing roll picks the second protected map and the first ban, finally the winning roll picks the second ban and the first song of the match.
  5. After the bans, protects and rolls have concluded, the player with the winning roll instructs the referee of their song selection, and the referee will switch to that song. After that song concludes, the loser of the pick will pick the next song (this is important to note, as this differs from most other established osu!mania tournaments). This process will continue until one of the two conditions is satisfied:
    1. One player has achieved enough wins in such a way that the other player cannot successfully win the round.
      1. The winning player moves onto the next match.
      2. The losing player falls to the losers bracket. If a player loses in the loser’s bracket, they are eliminated from the tournament.
    2. Both players are at match point (1 point from winning condition) at the same time.
      1. Both players will play one of two maps designated as the tiebreaker. These two tiebreakers will consist of a rice based tiebreaker and a hybrid based tiebreaker.
      2. The two tiebreakers are selected based on what maptype had more picks, more rice picks in a match will result in the hybrid tiebreaker being picked, more LN/Hybrid picks will result in the rice tiebreaker being picked, and a tie between rice and LN/Hybrid picks will result in the hybrid being picked.
      3. The winner of the tiebreaker will progress to the next match of the tournament, while the loser will be eliminated or sent to the losers bracket, depending on the position of the tournament.
  6. Players who exceedingly draws out the match-time by taking too long to pick a map will receive a warning from the referee, on subsequent occurrences the referee will pick a random map available from the mappool using the !roll command.
  7. If the beatmap ends in a draw, the game will be nullified and the beatmap will be replayed.

Disconnections
  1. Maps with a player disconnection that occurs within the first 30 seconds, or 25% of the song (whichever comes first) will be nullified and re-attempted.
  2. Matches will have a two disconnection limit -- upon the third disconnection, a point will be handed immediately to the player still active within the lobby.
