Am I playing the game wrongly?

I'm quite new to mania but I just recently realized that most of my maps are unranked. Is it a bad thing?

I've noticed that there's a ranking criteria on which maps would get ranked so I'm starting to think if maybe the beatmap packs I've downloaded are bad compared to the ranked ones? Since I've been quite lazy to download one by one, I just browsed the forums to download the O2Jam and BMS converts. Just wanted to download everything in one go lol.

TL;DR - Would my skill progression be slower by playing unranked maps compared to playing ranked maps?

I'm not tryharding to be a top tier player someday or anything like that. Just playing for fun. It's just that I want to try beating harder stuff.

Alright, I just found the mega thread where I can download all the ranked stuff in a few clicks. Time to farm PP I guess lol.

no, skill progression by playing unranked maps will not be different compared to playing ranked maps, in fact, some unranked maps will help you progress in ways ranked maps will not because unranked maps have many patterns which cannot be found on ranked maps

the reason many maps dont fit with the ranking criteria has nothing to do with quality, it's just that the ranking criteria is extremely strict and really difficult to make a map fit within

If your objective is to play and beat hard maps, unranked is actually more favorable in my opinion since you're open to more patterns that can help you improve. Ranked is limited not only by the criteria but by the actual amount of maps in the ranked section especially since it seems you also play 7k. I recommend using https://osusearch.com/ to find 7k beatmaps and stuff and just in general some hard 4k maps.

Your progression is really fast so I'd just tell you to keep doing what you have been. Good luck!

In fact, some or even most unranked/loved maps are better in terms of finding the "hard stuff" because they don't follow the strict (I guess, never really read it) ranking criteria. Your skill progression will be the same if not better. There are reasons to play ranked of course. Even though I say all this, I play quite a ton of ranked maps. I guess it's because I have played them from the start of me playing mania. And because of the ranking criteria, most of the maps will be guaranteed to at least have decent quality and not some random 8* dump/vibro map. The problem with converts is probably just if you're lazy and just want to download everything from one place.

TL;DR - literally the same and each has its own problem: ranked is too strict and good unranked maps are hard to find due to massive amounts of them existing.

Thanks for your input guys, really appreciate it. All my plays since yesterday have been ranked and I intend to clear all 3* and 4* maps for both 4k and 7k for now. Although I'm not so sure about 4* yet since I'm mostly getting A's & B's lol, and some occasional S clears.
