It seems that way more than 50% of the osu! player base have English as a secondary language. So I was wondering, to all the non English native speaking players. How hard was it learning a whole new language?

I started learning English when I was 4-5 years old through kindergarten English lessons.

pretty easy tbh. because you basically start learning english when you are in 5th grade or even as above in kindergarten (which i did too) and then basically it's during the rest of your school life. and if you play anything online. watch videos. use apps or other things. english is everywhere. which makes it really easy to grasp.

on the other hand i learnt spanish as a third language (3rd language is pretty normal in germany, obligatory for higher education. most people do french or spanish.) in 10th grade or so for 2 years. my spanish sucks basically. it's not that the language is (much) harder, it's rather that it's 'just' 1 or 2 years and you don't usually use it during your normal day.

That's exclusive from mexico...

On topic: It was not that hard, still, it required me a lot of everyday practice to reach this point.

English is taught in practically any non anglophone country due to the importance of the US or because they were a former colony of an anglophone country. De facto being the lingua franca of the internet.

The reason learning English comes so naturally to us bilingual osu players, is because we spend most of our time on the english-speaking part of the internet.

easy

all my english skills were learnt without me even knowing, so I can say that it isn't very hard if you surround with another language.

started learning when i was like at kindergarten or smth. my dad forced me to use english interface on basically anything (especially youtube), with the reason to improve my english. an english interface on youtube also means more english content. while i dont consider myself to be excellent at english, i'd say i'm still above average (especially compared to fellow countrymen)

Hmmm... That's rather a relative thing. For someone monolingual the first step is to get rid of those thoughts of learning another language is difficult and such, when in fact it isn't difficult AT ALL, yet lots of people are full of unrealistic expectations, thinking that learning English is something that can be done in 3 months; let me give you an example, Cambridge Institute estimates that you need 500-600 hours of study to reach a high intermediate level ( and 1000-1200 to reach a native-like proficency), that's like almost 1 year of studying 2 hours every day; most people aren't quite aware of how much does it take to learn and use to give up when they don't get any results.

Also, I'd like to give a bigger bruh because:

Spanish and English share lots of vocabulary.
English grammar is similar, but way simpler than Spanish.

Yet negative mentality lingers "Do U thINk I'm a GrINgO oR WhAT?" and similar phrases I have heard by friends and relatives.

kinda hard for me tbh

I have English as my primary language even though my first language was Spanish

The first two years in secondary school were very hard.
Since we came from different elementary schools we all were on different levels and sadly I was part of the kids on a lower one.

Thus the beginning was very frustating but after grasping the basics it became a lot easier because I passively learned English through the internet.

English is dumb but easy, spanish is beautiful but stupidly hard. just stick to english since it's everywhere
roufou
I'm borderline bad at Norwegian spelling in comparison to English spelling, so I guess you could say I had an easy time getting used to English.

It was pretty damn hard, considering I already knew 4 languages at the time (Filipino, Spanish, French and a bit of sign language), but adding a 5th one just made it harder. But watching movies, shows, reading and all that just made it easy to learn.

Well, for me it was like a do or die situation and I was already put in a local school within the 3rd month since I moved from Japan righ after the March 11 incident. It was tough but looking back I think this is the easiest way to learn a language, since I'm having troubles learning another language now but without any pressure.

To be honest, I speak English more frequently than Malay. I've taught English before Malay when I was small so it is not that hard for me anyway.
GPR
I can not speak english.

It was pretty easy actually cuz' the area we live in use English every single day

To be honest, I have no idea how I learned English. I just happened to spend a lot of time on the Internet when I was a mere child, playing games, chatting with random people, watching stuff. As the time passed, I felt more and more competent and confident while communicating in English. Interestingly, the whole process of learning didn't feel any hard.
