When someone says "We do accept tips" to you, do you feel obligated to tip?

It makes me feel like a bad person when I don't tip, so I want people's opinion on this situation...

you're in the US, that's kinda the point of them saying that, to make you feel like you have to without going and outright saying, hey tip us, we dont make enough money to live.

Generally, if you ain't stingy or poor, you should try to tip when you have the option to do so. Like the person above said, they ain't probably making too much money without, and often, when tipping is "enabled", it is actually "part of their salary" so to say. Depends a bit on vocation too.

Not that you're still obliged to tip most of the time. Whether or not you feel bad afterwards is then up to you :^)

Though then there are cultures or situations where tipping is like practically mandatory unless you want an outrage, but that's for another topic
abraker
I generally don't tip, and people go at great lengths to make you feel guilty for it too.

i don't have any/much money usually, but with the current pandemic and stuff like that, i don't tip because they

1st, and only reason: don't accept cash (i don't have a card, i'm a minor and i think you have to be a legal adult to have an bank account)
TheKingHenry
tipping with card just feels so wrong wtf ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't even go to restaurants these days.

if you're not poor. Tip to your highest ammount. It's better for everyone except your wallet
Mentee
I'm not so rich myself, and I am raised in a way where I should be nice towards people along with showing gratitude all the time. Which is why I do tip a reasonable amount without hesitation.

I have never seen anyone tip before in my entire life

Well, my friendly neighbourhood countrymen, it's because we don't do that in our region. It's voluntary for us.

This is probably more of an "American" or "Western" thing.

Yep, the US has a heavy tipping culture, tipping ~20% is considered normal, give or take depending on how you liked the service, and tips are often used as an excuse to pay employees less than minimum wage, then because employees aren't paid enough, the tipping culture gets reinforced. its a cycle that benefits nobody except for businesses.

Tipping isn't really a popular thing in China. Even if someone do tip, it's usually not by percentage and by a specific amount.
Flanster
Tipping is only a thing here for places where theres foreign tourists, otherwise you'd never see a local tip on any occasion.
I remember doing a summer job at a hotel/restaurant a few years after graduating from highschool. Got a tip from UK customers since I knew perfect english and served them as well as I could.

oh, i didn't knew that

we tip too, but not nearly as much. 5-10% is normal in germany i'd say. but the service is also a lot different and their wage is probably a little higher (idk pretty hard to compare with all circumstances). as for the question: i've never seen that happen but if it were to happen then yeah, i'd kinda feel obligated. but i'd tip anyways. (on the other hand since i'm a really forgetfull person there were times were i just forgot to tip lmao, so that could've changed that, yeah)

no id rather save money

I always tip unless there an ass to me

I don't feel obligated, tips here are like, if the performance of the staff or the restaurant is really good, then people give tips. But only people who can afford money can give tips here in this country, most of then don't give tips. I just feel a bit sad if a performance of a restaurant is really great but I can't afford any money, so no tips to them.
Zelzatter Zero
People in my country will be like: Tip? What's that?

Seriously, my country really gatekeeps money but not at the same time to the point that if you pay $500 for a $499.99 product, you'll always have that 0.01 change no matter what. I think that's partly because ours is still a developing country, but most of the people still respect each other most of the time.
Nuuskamuikkunen
If they give me a great service and got enough money, then yes.
But here most services are mediocre.

In the UK it feels more and more as though the US-centric system of tipping is being imported when it really doesnt work here. It's starting to get very irritating - we never used to tip, now we're expected to tip and it's not like the workers are being paid less like in the US!

Uh, americans, you don't know that tipping is an option and not an obligation on the rest of the world.

I get weird faces from friends when I say I don't tip
1103
if you go out to eat then you should plan to tip (anecdotal us experience)
Biis
Never seen anyone tip in my life and I have never felt the need to either.
Zeus-
Tipping isn't really a common practice as customers in where I live, so I probably won't bother tipping. Contrary to abraker's, pretty sure if I happen to tip, I'll get weird faces from friends. I guess it's all about one's sociocultural background.
1103
in the us where i work, a life would not be sustainable without tips as we get most our our wage off of tips

agreed with that but I always give tips cause why not? I won't be using those tips anyways
Meowcenaries
Never tip, it is a dumb ‘tradition’ to make you pay more for something you’re already overpaying for by eating out.
Riae
it depends on the person, the restaurant I sometimes eat at has a worth its price does not overprice at all and the staffs are nice they maybe slow but it's all fresh it depends on the person if you hate tipping its fine if you like tipping it's also fine.
but if you do eat in a restaurant that is overprice and has rude staffs you shouldn't tip
ClevelandsMyBro
rarely anyone has asked for tips to me so i dont really have experienced with things like those
FaizKTG
It depends on the culture. In my culture, employed people would never ask you to tip them and It's up to you if you wish to do so.
Noob
Nope, I've never tip unless they asked to.
Arctos Sagittario
Since we all know they mean please tip, then the decision is quite up to you.
I would still evaluate how good the service is, then decide whether to tip or not.
MusicRitman
In Japan tips aren't a thing at all (just saying). Tipping is an optional thing if you want to. If you didn't, don't consider yourself a coward for that.
Niktushi
Nah.
Maybe if I the service is great, but generally nah.
haha i rolypoly
in usa unless if you want the waiter to get paid less you're probably forced to give a tip
ItsZeanKun
Commonly, when I am riding my bike at the car wash, it says "We do accept tips", but I wont give a tip cuz I wanted to save money
S_P_O_O_N
I feel obligated, and then I immediately realize that I shouldn't feel obligated therefor having the opposite effect and making me less likely to tip.
