I have started making a beatmap with a song that I like and I have just found one that is slightly better quality, is there any possible way to change the song in the beatmap so I don't have to start from the beginning with a completely new beatmap?

No you cant, and even if you could it's a bannable offense. Just because there's someone mapping something better doesn't mean you should throw your work out of the window, but if you do want to map something else you can make an entirely new beatmap.

He means same song, different .mp3 file, which is fine.

Yes I meant a different .mp3 file not a different map, sorry if I worded it in a misleading way.

what I meant was...

Is it possible to change the .mp3 file that is being used in the beatmap I made with a different one so that I don't have to start a new beatmap with the other .mp3 file?

Unless, you're looking for specific steps on how to do this:

1. Do not have the .mp3 file running in osu!.
2. Open map folder.
3. Delete old .mp3, replace with new .mp3. Make sure filename is the same.
4. ???
5. PROFIT!

No worries Sakura.

Thank you all very much for your help, I have now found the solution I was hoping for and can continue with my beatmap.

About replacing.
I did it once time and I didn't get ban.
And I've seen ranked map which got replaced.

It is an abuse of the beatmap upload limit, thanks for telling!
