Hi.
I'm a new mapper who is getting started in mapping Normal and Hard diffs. Will studying the ranking criteria and other ranked normal/hard diffs be useful? Also is there a certain technique of choosing the rhythm to map to in the said diffs?
Leave some advice below if you'd like to. Thanks a lot <3

Yes, reading the ranking criteria and looking at ranked maps is definitely useful to get started. Regarding the rhythm, Normal diffs should have mostly 1/1 and 1/2 rhythms while Hard diffs should have mostly 1/2 rhythms with a bit of 1/4. In both diffs you probably have to simplify the song, which means you have to leave out certain sounds that are not very important. Just map the most important sounds and keep in mind that circles and sliderheads are clicked actively while sliderends are not clicked. You can use active objects for stronger sounds and passive objects for weaker ones as a rule of thumb. You can follow different layers of the song at once (vocals, drums, instruments etc.) but it's usually better to prioritize only one of them to keep it simple. Another thing to keep in mind is the BPM of the song, lower BPM (<150) allows you to use slightly higher spacing and rhythm density while higher BPM songs (>200) should be adjusted to with lower spacing and rhythm density.

The RC is very useful for those diffs, as is looking at ranked maps. For rhythm, you generally want to focus on the most prominent instrument in the song, especially in normals. Both rhythm and movement should be fairly simple; the RC has more details, so I won't write an essay here.
