I noticed that lately (not necessarily here) some people have been having discussions and arguments whether liking a song depends on how many people know about it or not. This is something that has been puzzling me a lot, and I honestly want to hear your opinions on this.

That's just called being a douche

I'm not sure what kind of opinion you were looking for, but

I think it's stupid. You like a song, but when someone else likes it you treat it like it's cancer. wtf? What was the point of liking it in the first place? Personally, I don't really care if it's mainstream or not. But since mainstream music gets more attention, it's bound to attract a huge amount of people everywhere, including people who don't like that particular type of music. Being mainstream doesn't necessarily means that it's good, but in most cases, it's successful. Popularity = Success.

Even that rebecca black...thing gets a second song. A SECOND SONG YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Then, I noticed some people "changed" their opinion about her and suddenly liked her because liking her was the "not mainstream" thing to do. They were looking for a reason to do that all along and they found it because her second song didn't SUCK as much as her first one. Liking a song DOESN'T depend on how many people know about it or not. It's how many people that like or hate it. Or just people that want to fit in with/rebel against society.

tl;dr: i think so

It will mostly depend on the other people's ideas even though it's not really that important. Music is relative I think. It's beauty always depended on our moods yet we only rated the accepted ones in the standarts of our own societies.

Many people are easily affected by the majority and they're afraid of being judged / getting kicked out of society because human always needs a place in the safe and dominant side. That's because we always run from what we are. We try to be what we are not, rightfully. We crawl for what we lack. Some people finds the gainful statue at acting different. Going against the majority. They try to surpass the majority to feel different & superior. So, naturally, weaklings follow the new dominant. And as a result, "trying to be different" becomes the new mainstream. Ironically those people can not be different because they all want to be different. Basically, people are natural born hipsters. So, even one day "less listened songs" will be "too mainstream" for people because an idol will appear and say "you're all blah blah, it's just too blah blah!" then weaklings gonna follow. Sheep herd.

But of course I can't generalize the people. There is weaklings and self-reliant ones.

you know I popped in here thinking the thread was gonna be no u or mainstream is evil, I'm very pleased with the input given here for me it goes without saying if i like it "I" like it and everyone else can do what they want to do I'm not gonna stop them.

It's worth having a thread for this sorta thing. Personally I think most people follow a certain type of music simply because others do and the rest do the exact opposite.

For me it's not really a matter of being mainstream or not, just that there's a lot of music that horrifies me whether mainstream or not.

depends

some mainstream shits are good but most of them is bad anyway, its all about getting drunk, parties etc etc

its not that important if you ask me

Whether a lot of people like a song or not, what matters is if you like it or not as a listener. Level of exposure does not ruin a good song in the listener's ear (even personal overexposure, to a degree).

The reason I dislike mainstream music isn't the music itself (often the songs are quite good, actually). What does bother me is that I always hear the same 10-12 songs on the radio going to school and work every day and they get old/overplayed fast. So i don't listen to pop music because I've already heard it a million times already.

Oh and as for other people's tastes, I don't really give two shits about what you think about my music, I'm going to continue listening to what I want regardless.

Well, they started playing more alternative stuff rather than the usual pop stuff like "i love you for one night lol let's go clubbing". It's rather nice to hear a variety, but like you said it gets tiring after they repeat it hundreds of time. I think I heard "We are young" 5 times in one day, few months ago.

Hating on mainstream music is sooooooooo mainstream

mainsteam music is what the general public is listening to
everything we like boils down to one average music "style" or whatever
most people may not like this, but the music somehow managed to get the biggest impact on folks.

Let's say most of us are different from the rest, we play osu!, we have weird interest, most of us probably like Asian culture to some extent. This will probably guarantee we're not listening to mainsteam music.
If I experience other people listening to my kind of music in a mainstream manner, I'd tend to loose interest for that type of music. A lot of it can be based of judgement from others, but also the fact that it's no longer special or exciting to listen to any longer.

Seeing people discuss what's good and bad music is fucking retarded. It's all subjective, even I can like some Lady Gaga at some point.

The reason why mainstream music is hated is the same reason why mainstream anime is hated.
Birdy
I don't give a fuck about that people call me weirdo, just because I like good music, that others dislike.
cruelcore1
I've experienced much mainstream hate, and I even used to be a part of it. I used to sort-of despise commercial trend. It took me a while to find out I was just being a douche by saying it's passion-less and stuff. If there's an MTV cokehead singing merely for cash, that doesnt mean his composer(s) actually didn't put their heart into it. Some people are extremely various about styles to begin with. It's all the ideal combination. If it was really c**p, nobody would listen to it anyway. Still dislike most of it though.

If you're going to take a position, you better support it. Simply saying "it is" is pointless, a waste of space and waste of our time when we look at such posts. Please don't post unless you actually have something constructive to contribute to the discussion rather than simple statement of opinion.

...because it's low quality and for children?

That about sums it up, actually

I don't really care whether it's mainstream or not. I only care whether people listen to music BECAUSE it's mainstream or not. Like when Gangnam Style became popular, I was so pissed because most people make fun of Asian people and how they don't understand a word of the "weird music from Asia lololol I'm so cool k". I just hope that Gangnam Style made them realise how stupid they sometimes sound when criticising Asian people for their similarities and looks. I know prejudice isn't only against Asian people, but this just pissed me off lol
