Sorry for using the thread for its intended purpose, but I have something to share.
My family is (kind) of dysfunctional. Everyone has their faults, yes, but everyone's more or less fine with each other. My mother might be paranoid, my brother might be too touchy, and I might be too much of a lazy bean, but everything's acceptable.
Except for my dad.
You see, when I see my dad I see a vortex of incomprehensible behavior. Like, I can usually relate to others and say "oh yeah, reacting that way kind of makes sense." Not with my dad though.
He's sure my mother and grandmother are evil masterminds that conspired against him and have corrupted his children. He's sure my brother's a jerk who wouldn't dare lift a finger for others' sake just because he's a jerk. He's sure he had done everything he could to try to have a happy life, but others forced it out of his hands. He's sure that he's nothing but a cash cow supporting our family—nothing more.
He complains that nobody wants to hang out with him, that nobody respects his position as the father, and everyone around him is a lazy fuck.
Unfortunately he is very annoying to be with. He calls out my brother for not wanting to spend time with him—my brother answers that he doesn't want to go to a bar filled with middle-aged men he doesn't know and listen to his father talk about how bad his family is all day. It's only natural. It's like trying to get a football fan interested in osu! rankings. It just doesn't mix. Well, not only that, but the fact that he's making fun of you behind your back even though you're in a place you don't even want to be in just to humor him. His drinking problem doesn't help, unfortunately.
I just don't understand how this guy thinks at all. His sense of humor is mostly just patronizing others and he talks about us as insultingly as possible, expecting better from us somehow.
At first I thought it was some form of encouragement, but he only stops when you actually storm off angrily. So it can't be right; the intent is not to piss someone off but to get them to do something.
Then I thought maybe he was just afraid of being neglected. The thing is, he does an excellent job at pushing people away. When he tries to teach us something, he can't help but make a retort like "maybe if you spent more time with me you'd know this stuff!" or something like that. If he asks someone for help, he'll interpret "hold on for a sec" as "no, go away" and storm off calling said person mean things.
Then I thought he was insane. Or perhaps he was just awful at getting a point across.
Whatever the case, the problem was a lack of understanding. Not communication—there was plenty of that. And I'm having a hard time trying to understand him. Some days he sounds like he's just a victim; others he sounds like he's a complete ass; and in some very rare cases I fear he might end up getting himself killed.
