[taiko] Drumrolls at <=125 BPM

If the BPM is less than or equal to 125 BPM, a drum roll's tickrate will be snapped to 1/8th, not the default 1/4th. This goes against the slower tempo of the song, so I think they should be avoided, and mappers should be told to avoid them in the RC too.

I propose adding the following guideline to the general taiko ranking criteria

Sliders/Drumrolls shouldn't be used when the BPM is 125 or less. The sliders' tickrate doubles at these BPMs, creating a fast rhythm that's unrepresentative of the song's tempo. This does not apply if the slider tickrate is set to 3.

This doubling doesn't occur when the slidertick rate is set to 3, so its exempt. I propose a guideline, not a rule, because maybe there are certain cases where the mapper might want to use a drum roll, like 1/8th or 1/16th rhythm. For the most part though, mappers shouldn't be using drumrolls at these BPMs.

I definitely agree with this, though I don't see it being very valid in the long run, considering ScoreV2's slider system relies completly on the slider tick rate rather than the BPM.

...unless that mechanic doesn't get implemented, in which case I see this becoming a pretty nice guideline.

I heard from someone that in osu!lazer they scrapped the idea of a map's slider tickrate doubling or halfing drumroll's tickrate because people didn't like it (who knows why)

All I know for certain is thats in the future. Today is now.

seems fine to me, ive never personally experienced this but its strange and i understand its implementation. unless there are any later brought up reasons to not add this i support it!

I partially agree with this proposal.

It's true that with the default slider tickrate, slider that presented in 125 BPM or lower has to be hit in 1/8. Somehow, this is *not* unrepresentative for some difficulties, such as Oni or Inner Oni difficulty which 1/8 pattern usage is possible in these difficulties.

Ranking Criteria means to allow freedom to the mapper as much as possible. I don't think that limiting the pattern choice for the difficulty that such a pattern is possible is a good idea. Discourage this 1/8 slider pattern usage sounds fair for the lower difficulty like Kantan, Futsuu, and Muzukashii. It would make more sense since the fastest pattern snapped allow in these difficulties is 1/3, 1/3, and 1/6 respectively which 1/8 slider would be truly unrepresentative.

If 1/8 are contradictory to the slower tempo of a song, why not outright forbid the use of ANY sliders in sections that do not support 1/4 rhythm.

Sorry, rhetorical question. Sliders do not mirror actively mapped notes and there are two cases:

1 : They are to be mashed in lower difficulties such as Kantan, Futsuu, Muzu. No kantan player would even grasp 1/4 rhythms in a 180 bpm slider. Same for futsuu. And lets not restrict slider usage for the lower 3 diffs, it takes away an emphasis tool unnecessarily.

2 : They are to be played atleast semiproperly by players in the Oni and Inner Oni range. I would like to hope that Oni to Inner Oni level players are able to bursts out 250bpm-ish 1/4 speed to play 7ish slider ticks.

Playability should not be an issue by the two points above. If it were, just ban slider usage from Muzu down (dont.)

The only possible issue left with these slider is if they fit in the map as an emphasis tool itself (such as "Is this slider appropiate in thid section"). This is hard to enforce via RC since it has too many possible cases to cover.

I would just leave this in the hands of the modders to see when 1/8 sliders are inappropiate, just as with 1/4 sliders. No need to hardblock it via RC, as with many bad mapping practices.

agree w nepuri, I see the concern in OP but it's something modders can handle

Found this through the Mappers' report. I'm also Nepuri's opinion. Limiting the use of Slider takes one mapping element away in lower difficulties for a mechanic that doesn't have any important impact playwise. Afterall, you are not required to hit the ticks.

as others have said, nepuri explained why this is alright without implementation
