If you middleclick outside the game window, won't that risk activating any background windows?

I do see what you're saying, and yes, that is an issue. (I don't use windowed mode so I hadn't considered this.) At least in D3D, you can enable mouse-grabbing, which allows a window to steal mouse "focus." This could be an option, which also enables the middle-click-to-center shortcut. (During a spinner with the proposed option enabled, the window would enable mouse-grabbing.)

Wait, I don't get it.

You lose track of your mouse when you spin? And you're playing fullscreen? There's only so far it can go, right?

Honestly, my tip is just to keep practicing your spinning. You'll get better and learn to know where your cursor is.
