Some 3-4* Questions

Hello, I've been playing Osu! for a year or so and had some questions.

1. Why did I drastically improve even though I took a massive break in Osu? When I first started playing Osu I had ground out some 70 hours into Osu Mania alone, the results of that endeavor allowed me to barely pass low 3* maps. Afterward, I got burnt out of mania and decided to switch my attention to Taiko. It's now been three or four months and I decided to give Osu! Mania another go. At first, it seemed that I had drastically decreased in skill, only able to pass 2.5* maps, but after a couple of weeks or so I've noticed that I started improving rapidly. I can now complete most 3.5* maps and am working my way towards 4* with most of my highest pp games being within this 14 day period. It would have made sense for me to drop to 2* maps and then have to work for another 50 or so hours to regain my skill.

2. Why are there such large differences in difficulty in maps of the same star level? Over the course of my time playing Osu, I've noticed that some maps are way harder than others of the same ranking. For example, I'm able to pass the 4* map Triumph & Regret with a percentage of 91% but other 4* maps I have no hope of passing. The same can be said of higher 3* maps.

3. How much of a difference does changing the skin and scroll speed make? I'm currently running on the default skin and scroll-speed and was wondering if changing them would help me improve.

4. How can I transition from a 4k player into a 7k player? Up until now, I've stayed away from any keys higher than 4k because my keyboard wouldn't let me push certain keys at the same time. I've now found a fix for the problem and was wondering if there are any 4k habits that are bad for 7k?

1. because you unlearned all of your bad muscle-memory and relearned better muscle memory when you returned.

2. because most of the ranked map pool is uncharacteristically easy compared to what is possible at that star rating, triumph and regret is heavily overrated (the 4star diff plays like a 3star map, the 5star diff plays like a 4star map) and a perfect example of why you shouldnt base improvements on ranked maps.

3. it depends what you're good at reading. i would heavily recommend experimenting with skins (try out bars, arrows, circles, and whatever else, see what you like) and scroll speed (different skins are better with different scroll speeds)

4. i am unqualified to speak about 7key as i do not play it, but i'd recommend if you want to be a 7key player, you start playing 7key. practicing 4key will not help you whatsoever in 7key. (I can play a good portion of 4-6star 4key maps, but i struggle to complete anything above 2stars at 7key).

Star rating system in mania is based entirely on density of maps. There is no pattern recognition. So relatively easy maps with a couple of dense Jumptrill/Roll patterns will be rated significantly higher than maps that are consistently hard throughout their entirety and don't have density spikes.

The lanes on the default skin are way too narrow. A wider skin should improve your reading. And the same scroll speed is perceived differently depending on the skin you use.

Transitioning to 7k is pretty much like starting over. It doesn't matter how good you are at 4k, you have to start with 1* and work your way up just like you did with 4k.

If you want to play 7k you should start practicing it now.
