How do you guys alternate? I know it is kind of a stupid question, but it just seems so difficult and different to me.
When I play 2.5 - 3 stars maps, I can pretty much handle them well (Noob), but when it comes to playing maps that require alternating I am just not able to do it, it seems so weird to me to use a second finger, it really makes me lose focus on the game.
Are there any tips related to alternating, anything that i can do?

I had the same issue, I'm a main singletapper (and still am) but I learned alternating a bit as it increases fingercontrol. I couldn't do any actual map with alternating but I always tried to alternate very slow parts of a map. And eventually I was able to play faster and faster parts with alternation. Now I can alternate a bit. Maybe that helps.

Just do it.
Take your time and most importantly, play slow maps so that you can focus on what your fingers are doing without panicking, potentially even on maps that you could singletap completely. It's more about getting used to it and switching between singletapping and alternating on the fly.
Try maps like https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/31251#osu/102797 or https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/14906#osu/54321

Thank you both! Will try those tips.

I just alternated since beginning lol
can do both alternating and singletapping with any finger now. I think you can train your alt skill by increasing speed of maps you play that way. as you improve it to being able to pass harder maps, you can start getting into DT and fingercontrol-demanding maps. pretty much everything that forces you to alternate.
edit: just saw that you're a new player. I think you can just try alternating continuosly, you probably won't encounter really fast maps at your skill level anyway. no need to play everything with alternating if you don't like this playstyle, but you can at least try it on the maps you play. and if some maps are still too fast for you to alternate - as I said earlier, increase difficulty and speed step by step.

I gotta say

Learning to alternate from the beginning will make stuff a lot easier in the long-term.

I never think about what finger to use, I just alternate everything (maybe not always the slow parts) 100%.
Learned alternating at 100 hours or so, so I have 700hrs+ of full alternating. I am so happy I made the decision to learn it early on. You have no idea.

alternating is really just something you learn by doing it, the more you do it the more natural it becomes.
there really is no easy quick way to alternate. tbf it's also easier to stick with single tapping in the beginning since most maps are made for that and it's easier to learn

alternate is something you do for a preference tbh. I can single tap but it needs more effort of me, so I alternate fast bpm map to relax more.

As someone who started alternating since the 2nd week of playing osu and is almost as good as you, all i can say is that i started doing that with the easiest maps and going up in speed and difficulty by time. After you learned basic alternating the next step would be to play alternator maps. However i can't give maps to practice on, because I'm personally looking for alternator maps myself :D Anyway you should practice many tricky patterns around the level you can alternate on (or faster). With practice you should be better than me in no time XD

Also, let's play together some time!

There are some maps that it just seems impossible to SS (or 99%) them without alternating. I really prefer to singletap, i wish those maps that I'm trying to play were possible with singletap only :D
For example (if anyone's curious): https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/258193#osu/590699
And this is only the HARD level, 3.17 stars.

Just alternate everything for a week (full alternate) and it won't be hard anymore. That's what I did.

in regards to technique: try lifting your tapping hand like you're singletapping, but alternating fingers. The motion will be half wrist movement and half finger movement. Moving only your fingers is not easy for beginners in alternating, as it feels less stable.

I was in your position a little while ago too, I was a singletap main and wanted to switch over. I was around high 4* level and had played for months this way.How I learnt was to drop all the way down to 2/3*. I had to force myself to alternate and I didn't stop and slowly worked my way back up to that 4* level. It might be different for you but it took me 2 weeks to learn to full alternate, and now I can't even singletap anymore lol but yeah, just practising full alternating on what is extremely comfortable for you for a period of time will build the muscle memory and you can go from there.

tldr : force yourself to alternate on easier maps and you'll build muscle memory over time!
