Hey there,

I don't play taiko really but I've thought about getting into it. I know some basic playstyle things, like ddkk vs. kddk, but I'm a bit confused when people talk about "semi" or "full" alt and things along those lines. I play a lot of STD, so all I know about is singletapping (single tap everything possible but alternating hyper speed streams and some triples), hybrid (Single tap slow things but alternate most, can depend on pattern. I use this style) and full alternation, where you alternate every note.

When someone talks about how they alternate, by what degree do they mean? Do they alternate certain color notes or things over certain bpm? Do they use one hand for slow parts? Is one hand usually prefered, that does more work than others? etc.

I understand these might be stupid questions, but I was just curious as a standard player looking into the Taiko world. Thanks!

(Also, are there posts anywhere that go more indepth into playstyle? It interests me a lot, and I have not been able to find much information on the taiko meta)

so, semi and full alt apply pretty much exclusively to kddk/dkdk

ddkk playstyles get to turn brain off :)

Full alt basically means you swap hands for every single object.
So, with kddk, regardless of pattern, you will swap left/right/left/right for each object
It should hopefully be clear why this isn't really possible with the ddkk playstyle.

Semi-alt is the same thing, except you don't do it for EVERY object, sometimes you play patterns in a different way (usually for patterns where it is very easy to do, such as kdkdkdkdkd where as kddk you can just do left left right right left left right right).
