Theory isn't trivial, though it becomes second nature once you truly understand it, which is why it may seem so.

Don't worry about a canvas full of fail, too. You've gotta fail first before you get better, after all. One of the reasons why I like sketching with my tablet more than on paper is because if it turns out bad, I can just delete the layer instead of having to rip the page out of my sketchbook or something.

EDIT:
@cloviastudio
Oooh! I like that. :D
I've been trying to incorporate my lineart more fluidly into the picture, like what you did there.

LOL thanks!!!!!

I simply did't draw the lineart.
Drawing directly on the rough pic sometimes works better. Saves time as well.

Thank you for your inspiring words... I shall set out a journey of... stuff...?

But yeah, i get where you're coming from - i need to get teh stuff nailed down. In my head. I mean, when it comes to drawing from observation, i feel much more relaxed and can make something semi-decent - but with trying to make stuff up i just blank and end up with a canvas full of fail, because i don't know what i'm drawing or how i should be drawing it. This theory stuff always seemed so trivial, but apparently it's not. I just wish we actually did this kinda stuff in Art lessons... -.-
your lighting and the 'feeling of the character' is not bad!
I would suggest pay attention to the balance.
I mean, make sure the left side and the right side are the same.

Imitating is somewhat helpful but you do need some basic knowledge to master that kind of style, etc.
I agree with Daru that a canvas full of fail is nothing. It's better than a blank canvas :D

Ah, I see.
Still, though, you have a semblance of line in the picture - around the waist and arms for instance. I'd very much like to improve my linework; I don't quite like how I handle it, though experiments with other styles have typically gone awry for me.

Also, try not to double-post on this forum. If you need to add something, edit it into your previous post instead of making a new one. ;)

Oops sorry, I'll pay attention next time. >double-post

I agree that linework is quite tricky. Sometimes I draw it sometimes I don't... depends on the content.
People say that if u want to master linework u need to do thousands of quick sketches. Oh well.

Gyaaaaa the English part of my website is almost empty I apologize for that. >:(
I'm mainly using the Japanese part right now.

I do have an illustration book - or doujinshi - of Touhou Project published in Japan earlier this year. Still on sale.
Commercial illustration is part of my job as well =)
Quaraezha
I've browsed all the language parts. Ignoring all texts and just staring at the artworks. lol
But seriously, these are amazing. And thanks for the pippi colored render. I'll go make a wallpaper.

Agreed. :D

I wish I could make any money with my arts. :P
Publishing doujin is rather intimidating to me.

Thanks for your patience! :)
I was thinking about uploading more pics onto the website...all the time.
Soooooo looking forward to the wallpaper!!

It is hard - for that I'm not living in Japan.
There's seldom any market for this kind of things in Britain.

I like your landscape paintings in dA. There are loads of anime events in the states and I'm sure u can give it a try!

Alright done. Made something simple.
Just made 5 resolutions.

Go ahead and request a resolution.

Thanks to both Cloviastudio and Quaraezha for now letting me have the pleasure of having a 1080P osu! wallpaper with osu! mascot Pippi in such a delightful art piece.
My desktop can now die happily.

All there needs to be now is a 'head tilt' Pippi and I would go insane.

Great job. Very cool coloring style.
Also, despite having seen two versions of this picture already, I didn't notice the off-center star on the shirt until now. That's a very interesting design choice and I like it

I noticed the offset star right away, but what I didn't notice until reading your post is that her shirt is actually partially transparent. Interesting, and very subtle.

It is?
I thought that it was just the lighting - warm-lit pink makes flesh-like tone.
Quaraezha
I've been staring at it all day it doesn't look like it's transparent to me.
boat
not sure if just a spot or a nipple

awp
she's wearing a bra
boat
maybe its a transparent bra \ :D /
Quaraezha
That would be an odd spot if it was a nipple.
I guess I could see the bra in her right boob but iunno.
awp
I did some tinkering around with hue and contrast and whatever the hell the dodge tool in photoshop is to help make it a bit more obvious

http://puu.sh/3bu4 (400kb image so external link)

The line is very obvious on the right side (our left) but is a bit harder to see on her left (our right) due to the light reflection

anyhow, we're all looking into this way too much
Quaraezha
Oh wow, I just assumed that was just part of the lighting.
We'll ask Clovia if she posts again :U

I didn't find it to be transparent at all and just a coloring technique.

I think you were just tricking us into staring at her boobs more. Not that I'm complaining or anything.
ampzz
If you ask me it's more a lighting effect than anything (perverse) else, still I love the work that Clovia did on both original drawing and colouring.
You have my thanks for my semi-permanent wallpaper for the next few months.
boat
why can't we all just agree on nipple :(
Daru
awp pulled a Freud.

idk I wouldn't call it perverse, anatomy is anatomy. Clothing is clothing. Life is life. Art imitates life, and life imitates art.

Deep stuff, man. 8-)

Anyway, back to the fan art.
Vext_old
I missed the nipple discussion!? GOD DAMN IT!!!
cloviastudio
What! It's just lighting not nipple!
...oops I shouldn't say that should I? ;)
awp
Oh you should. Otherwise it's in a very awkward spot
