I think one series that got me excited is Hajime no Ippo, I suppose everyone know why ^^;
I also enjoyed hellsing and berserk (although i like berserk as manga better)
Personally i dont like all those series with 200+ episodes, not really because of the content but because of the annoyning fans of the series who keep telling its the best and so on...

My top two favorites would have to be Initial D and Baccano. Haven't gotten around to finishing either of those but these are probably the only two I wouldnt mind watching over and over again.

Mine is a mainstream but I still liked the whole story, it's Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I also loved Code Geass but I think the reason for that had a lot to deal with the ending.

Initial D or Inazuma 11. I haven't watched that many anime though, I mainly watch anime targeted at young boys. Legendz is also up there, same with Prince of Tennis.

My top favorite is Princess Tutu. Fairytales, ballet, classical music and screwing around with the Magical Girl genre before Madoka made it cool. It's a really excellent show, highly recommended.
Honorable mentions go to Paranoia Agent, Baccano!, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Welcome to the NHK! And a bunch of others, but I'm limiting myself to five...so those are my top five.
