Shinsekai is really good. Interestingly, while watching it, I found myself rooting for Squealers from the very beginning. I was kind of disappointed when they failed to eradicate the humans and got pushed back to where they came from. Squealer did nothing wrong and fuck the human tyranny.

Speaking of depressing stuff I've been reading the Saishuu Heiki Kanojo manga. Don't know if it is because I know the ending because I watched the anime ~8+ years ago or my tastes have changed and made it more compatible with me or the manga is just the superior version but I am finding it extremely tragic.

Yeah, the first episode set the tone pretty well- the way she so casually asked if her arm was broken made me realise like, "oh shit, this world is grim". The monster design is pretty amazing too.

It has a lot of parallels to the novel Brave New World. Especially considering the title translates to "From The New World", if I had to guess I'd say that it was an inspiration to it. Any 'Authoritarian Leadership' genre work is going to have similarities to the others. Brave New World is just the most obvious point of influence. No need to make a list of every single one. Additionally you risk making dangerous assumptions assuming all influential western works have had the same impact in Japan.
I do think it is interesting that Shin Sekai Yori and Psycho-Pass respond to their control structures as more a necessary evil rather than something to be prevented. It's probably a mix of the two but one has to think whether this is a difference in East/West perspective or just a result of modern era paranoia.
