When you add someone to your friend's list you get asked if you want the player to receive a notification. Then you can privately stalk pro players (like most people I think have some top tier players in their list just so they can find them quickly) or you can either do the new stuff about telling him hey I added you.
Of course you should be able to disable these notifications, like "Check this and you won't receive notifications about being added as a friend". Which would be quite useful.

What is the purpose of friendship anyway, the only thing it seems to do is tell me when people are online, but I can't get a list of them on my profile or easily see there profiles or anything. It seems like the friends function is basically worthless.
At the top 40 scoreboard of a map, if one (or more) of your friends got a place there, that score it's marked/coloured with orange, and ingame, at the top 40 score tab at the left when the player is playing map, that score is coloured/marked with pink to let you know that one of your friends got a place there.. and.. when you click "Settings" in the osu! page, it shows you which friends are online right now, browsing the page.GigaClon wrote:

NO I don't like it at all, it's already possible to let someone know they've been added by messaging them, a "feature" such as this just leads to poor culture. I find sending impersonal friend requesst to people so you can feel better about yourself by having a friend on paper.. a bit pathetic.

As someone who posts a lot of youtube videos I would be interested to see any random friend'ing coming my way. Would prefer it in list format as opposed to notification though.

I support this. I made Instagram followers/friends because of also following/friending them back. But unlike Instagram, there is no good way to know if a person has friended you unless you friend them back and it says "Mutual Friend." I see this as a way for those people who have no real life friends in osu! to make friends in-game.

The way friendship status was handled in osu! always seemed strange. +4

On the new page your friends are displayed as "x followers". I think the option to just follow someone to see his scores etc. is nice, but a friend option coupled with the suggestion made here would be really nice to have, too.
