osu! Online duelling mode
So far osu!’s multiplayer has mostly been used by people who play for fun instead of people who play competitively. And unless a competitive player has enough skills to enter a tournament, they are pretty much stuck with single player and will usually avoid playing online.
This is where the duelling mode would come in. The duelling mode would allow completive players to play together by putting them in a 2 player lobby where they would take turns to choose maps and win points after each map (basically the same setup as the osu! world cup but with 2 players). The basic rules for this game mode would be:

Best of 3 maps (best of 5 and 7 could also be added)

the first person to connect would get first map pick

then the other player would get to pick a map

if tie breaker map is needed, the player with the highest total score from all the maps played would get to pick the map

if a player disconnects then they get 1 minute to re-join or the other player automatically wins

when someone wants to duel, they will be connected to the player with the closest pp the them

at the end of a duel both players will be asked if they want to duel with the same player or to leave the duel

A duelling ranking system will also be added, in so that competitive players will have something to compete for. This rank will be based on the amount of duels they have won and lost, but not on the scores they have achieved. For every duel the player wins they will gain 5dp (duelling points) and for every duel they lose they will lose 3dp. The duelling rank of the player will be based upon their total dp.

The idea for this is still very rough but I really think players who have always dreamed of playing in tournaments like the osu! world cup, but can't because they lack the skills, will enjoy this.

Well ranking (Bot pp and single song) is suppose to make things competitive and it works regardless you play solo or multi, multiplayer is practically same as solo just with social interaction, thats why people come there just for fun, if they want to work out on pp or single song more they go to solo. But idea is interesting.

Everything sounds good except for this part:

That would be way too easily exploitable. Two friends could keep purposefully winning and losing against each other, to keep winning 2 points each. Even if you changed the point system, a popular guy could just get heaps of friends to lose to him on purpose. It would be like the old pp system, where it was less about skill and more about play time. This is a good idea but it should be purely for fun, or maybe for arranged competitions etc. There should be no ranking system behind it.

These are the two things I have issues with. The tie breaker should be chosen by the player who has the higher % combo-ed for each map. If a ranking system is implemented then, it should be a fairly sophisticated system that would calculate gain/losses based on predictions (see elo rating system).

This is why the the players would be put together by their pp. There would be no way to choose who you play with.

Tournament mode has already been suggested. There're different "flavours" out there for picking: t/178403 t/187120 t/112907.

Your suggestion is closest to t/178403 so please continue there. Feel free to comment on other topics as well of course.
