[s]It's a lot harder than IaMP, at first glance. Since Spell Cards aren't as powerful anymore, you can't just go and pound on the enemy like before. Sad to say, right now I can only kill a few characters in the lineup on Normal. Just haven't gotten used to the controls yet. Hitting a whole different button to execute cards is... odd.

Strike the above. I'd do it myself, but the code isn't working for some reason.

Although I can't kill many enemies on Normal, I finished the Story Mode with Reimu and Marisa. I can't resist lolling at Reimu, her shrine keeps getting annhiliated in doujins, and it finally gets destroyed canonically (despite Sanae threatening it back in MoF) here.

Also, Alice owns against Spell Cards which rend the opponent immobile (hint: spam standing C), Patchouli's remix is awesome, and Reisen is an idiot for facing the haxxor mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion for her first opponent.

So how is SWR? Never got to play IaMP. Better? Worse? Worth trying out? Are the IaMP players jumping boat to this?

I personally prefer SWR to IaMP, simply because the final boss doesn't just ass-rape you with her last spell card like Suika does. Also, the new Spell Card system is very novel, although having only twenty cards to play around with for six or so stages is pretty rough on a player (like me) who used to spam them whenever they had a chance in the last game.

On another note, does anyone notice that the framerate for the other Touhou games drops to single digits after playing SWR or IaMP? Or is it just my computer?

nope, I guess you got something gone wrong...

I haven't cleared story mode at all yet, but I've only attempted once, due to lag when burning stuff.
I guess it's only a matter of time until the characters are ported to MUGEN, I'll get some lolshots when Reisen or Suika are released.

Longiner: The girl on her side is Suika, an oni with a penchant for getting drunk every chance she gets. Case in point - her blocking animation is her taking a swig from that bottle of hers.

Yet another subject: Touhou 11. It's going to be similar to 10, as in two characters (Reimu and Marisa) with three different styles. The thing about it, though, is that each style corresponds to a certain youkai from previous games. While I get Reimu's partners and two of Marisa's partners, I don't get her third partner. Why the heck would Marisa choose that kappa, of all people? I mean, sure, the two other slots are fine with Alice and Patchouli, as they're all magicians (and Alice was her partner in 8, as well, so one of Reimu's is Yukari), but couldn't she have found a better partner than Nitori?

You'd understand if you drank cucumber flavored beer.
Nitori is, imo, the 5th epic win character.

On the subject of SA, I'd be much happier if it had more playables, like IN. I think what's made the series good so far is the varying styles between the games, and how older ones are revisited now and then. I think it's about time for an engaging, large-scale story.

In other news, due to my training in Touhou, I was FINALLY able to beat Zero Wing.

Easy and Lunatic are the only difficulties that really count.
I always clear easy entirely before attempting anything else.

So I returned to Perfect Cherry Blossom after some training in Mountain of Faith. I passed the first three stages without a death, then got promptly killed by the Prismrivers, obliterated Youmu, and managed to survive until Yuyuko's second-to-last Spell Card without using a Continue. I had to burn off two Continues in the end, and I had to sacrifice all twelve of my bombs that the Continue gave me (I was using Sakuya) just to survive to the end. And then I got hit by the absolutely last bullet that was sent out. Still, if I can just get past the Prismrivers without losing a life, I might be able to 1cc PCB.

A bit earlier this week, I also retried Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, because it's the only game so far I haven't cleared at all yet (again, damn you Sakuya and your knives!). I got hit... by Icicle Fall... :( :o

After forty-five tries, I finally, finally, cleared a Last Word (Lunatic Red Eyes). Twenty of the attempts were me running into the exact same blue bullet. Ten were me being unable to reach the edge of the bullets before they returned. The other fourteen were stupid as hell mistakes, such as me actually backing into a suppository, smashing against the walls of red balls, etc.

Cleared the second one after just six tries (Blind Nightbird); of course, only counting the ones I did this session (if you add them all, it comes out to about twenty-something, so eh). Youmu focused pwns bosses in the blink of an eye.

Unseasonable Butterfly Storm is hard. Remind me next time to not use Alice, Marisa, or Youmu. Maybe Reimu or Yukari.

SA could also be good training... I've heard it's pretty much the hardest of the Windows games so far.

Aya's speed, and Suika's auto-collect anywhere will be very useful to me (assuming, that is, I actually want to stop firing for a few seconds in that maelstrom). Patchouli's formation change should also work nicely.

Phantasmagoria of Flower View should be your choice then, since there are no bad endings. Just go and kill the Judge of Paradise and get your ending. Or if you want a whole number installment, I'd say Mountain of Faith - although if you do have to Continue, you'll have to start the stage all over again, and the Spell Card Mountain of Faith is killer even on Easy. Maybe Imperishable Night, because as long as the time doesn't go past 5 AM, you'll get a normal ending - and if you manage to get to the Last Spell segment of the FinalB boss, you'll get the good ending.

I beatmapped one of them, complete with an HP bar. Search for McWTF. And yes, my computer is randomly turning itself off these days. I think it's due to overheating. <_<
Also, Ronald Mcdonald offering a cheeseburger to a woman telling him to remove his shoes.

I've moved from hating my inability to dodge to hating my BT keyboard for not letting me dodge. I tap the button to move twice, I have a 5% chance that neither are registered, and a 15% chance that only one is. I died twice to Cirno and Hong Meiling because of it.

I ALWAYS have slow on, otherwise I can't avoid ANYTHING. You should try GP mouse movement maybe?

vwoot. Finally cleared Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Remilia's last Spell Card is disturbingly easy, compared to her last normal attack and Sakuya. I cleared her with only one life used... Sakuya took off three. Damn Misdirection. Still, I was left at the end with no Continues, no lives in reserve, and a single bomb.

I'm not going to do the PC-98 games, though. The Windows games give me enough of a headache.

Ugh. Give me a bunch of tiny bullets in a random pattern, and it's likely I'll pass through them. But give me slightly larger bullets in a predetermined pattern, and I totally freeze up.

Curse you, Lily White, and the devil you made a deal with to eternally revive. Curse you Sakuya, and your formations that have huge hitboxes.

In other news, I seem to be getting better at Mountain of Faith. I don't die until the crows start coming. Then I just hemorrhage lives. Also, LaserMari is essentially a condensed Final Spark at 3 options.

A random thought - if they do teams in the future (like Imperishable Night), I wonder if they aren't going to do a team of Sanae and Reimu. Granted, Sanae isn't a youkai, but still, it would be interesting if they have the two shrine maidens together.

That would be interesting, although I insta-main anyone who uses LAZORZ(Unless there's a moonrabbit present).

Also, It appears as though SA lets you warp from one side of the screen to the other, like Mario Bros and Pacman, and the ball thing works differently.

I bet you use MarisaB a lot in MoF, especially with her WTF major damage potential.

That warp thing is an attribute of ReimuA. IIRC, ReimuB has auto-collect anywhere, and ReimuC has WTF speed. MarisaA has 8 options instead of 4, MarisaB has formation changes, and I don't remember what MarisaC has.

Oh, and I recall a small glitch in the demo. You could hide in the bottom corner, off the screen, and just ignore every attack. Granted, you'll have a pitifully low score, but it's a way to get a clear. ZUN will probably fix it though for the full version.

Also, read this doujin and laugh. You may need to watch this vid afterwards to learn about number 5 in the doujin.

I saw all of those parody videos before I started touhou, I guess it was pretty damn pointless, since I had no clue what a spell card was, or what they mean by hitboxes.

When an IaMP battle takes four and a half minutes just to win the first round (at 60FPS by the way), one of two things could have happened. One, they utterly suck, or two, they so utterly rule that they can't get any good hits on each other.

And I thought osu! was the only game to be able to drain my arm's power. Trying not to die too much in my first IN Hard run has my left arm (my shooting/bombing arm) aching like mad. I made it to the Reisen battle, but got game over'd during her last Spell Card. And somehow, I managed to cap Shoot the Moon ingame with Youmu, but can't do so with Marisa in Spell Practice.

I downloaded the SA demo, and I made it through the first stage (and title menu) just tapping shoot the whole time, then it crashed. (it might have been because I had osu and portal minimized....)
Imo, It looks more like MoF2 rather than a completely new game, although I like the satellites.

ONLY 3?! So that means you can't even use diagonals when focusing fire? Sheesh... Get a pad or something. No wonder you kept phailing in the other games.

And also, I would loves to see you try to fight off the FinalB boss. Save a replay or something and put it up here.

Actually, I played the other games on my laptop, which could handle 4 buttons. I played this on the (Soon-to-be :[) old desktop. And I do have a pad, I just prefer using a keyboard.

And I saved a replay, so I guess I could upload it. :/

Edit: Here it is. Change the file extension to ".rpy".

I'm just trying to imagine your expression during some of those Spell Cards.

And, if you want, my own replay, just taken now. It'll be on the bottom of the Replays. Again, like Longiner's, rename the extension to .rpy. I look like a berserker compared to you, Longiner.

Slain, yours looked like the AI on PoFV, I didn't know it was possible to move so precisely.
And loginer's looked surprised at everything, I noticed at a lot of spell cards, you stopped firing and moved back before anything had been shot.
I just had a go, but I used Marisa and Alice.

If you look closely, you'll notice how distracted I am from Reisen's and Kaguya's battles (and the first half of the Reimu/Marisa stage), because of the epic music.

Something about your play kind of bugged me, neo@lex. Do you use counterbombs at all? Or were you distracted by the battle music too much to notice?


I'm actually pretty surprised at the different play styles between the three of us. I just move wherever I think the next enemy wave is, trying as much as possible to stay near the POC line (and besides that, just hoard Time orbs like there's no tomorrow). I'm prone to making ⑨ level mistakes, though (like trying to get to the POC for non-existent items at Fire Rat's Robe).

Loginer seems to prefer the bottom of the screen, playing tight, or maybe that's because of his keyboard, only allowing 3 strokes. Surprising he didn't get hit with that first Master Spark, though.

neo@lex seems to enjoy being at the middle of the screen, but usually doesn't go higher, and lets Points just fall out of reach. Movement as a youkai is fairly tight, but human movement just goes everywhere.

Both neo@lex and Loginer seem to prefer being a youkai, although neo@lex is okay with going human (sometimes just randomly switching between the two). I just go into youkai mode to move around during boss battles (as the Netherworld team), when it's too hard to stay as a human (say, during the Reisen boss battle), and to kill enemies with slaves.


I'm probably dead wrong about some of these points (Loginer most likely).

You were pretty bang on about me, I couldn't care less about counter-bombs or Points, I just like to shoot stuff, also, I think counter-bombs get in the way of epic spellcards.
Have you guys got the English patch? The dialog is epic lolp.

That would be because of the keyboard. If I press more than 3 keys at the same time, they're all canceled out. The result is that I freeze at the spot and stop shooting/focusing. >_>

EDIT: Here. Rounds 6 and 7 had me slightly distracted, due to the fact that there was an ant crawling on me, and it was too much trouble until about halfway through round 7 to care enough to take it off the bed. I was a bit loose on this one, normally I'm a bit tighter in attack area.

I don't see how you could compare me to the insane movement of the PoFV AI.

The required Config file is missing, so　KIKIDASEMASEN(without? locate?)　th11.cfg. You can not start due to errors. Is the file in the directory?

Edit: THwiki says something about vista.
WindowsVista UAC is turned on, and under the Program Files (default) the installation of the
"書き出せませんto file th11.cfg" yada the error will not be able to start.

* There are several measures. One way to please.
o Program Files installed under a non-(easiest)
o executable file or a shortcut, right-click the "Run as administrator" or,
Executable (th11.exe) Properties> Compatibility tab, "as an administrator to run this program" to select a start
In this case, every effort to select a UAC approval.
o Open the folder properties, to edit the Security tab> User full control check on
o following ways to clear the UAC
Control Panel> User Accounts and Family Safety Settings> user account> "User Account Control enabled or disabled" to remove the check

It worked! But for some reason, my StB progress is gone!


I'm surprised at my IN progress. I can get up to Fujiyama in Extra Mode, beat up to Marisa in Lunatic Mode, Reisen in Hard Mode, and can clear FinalA in Normal Mode. I've since taken to having every team clear as many Spell Cards as possible, of all the ones I have.

Compared to my progress in the other games, anyway.

MoF Spell Card: Why can I dodge Kanako's last Spell Card now, but not the one before it?!

I don't play PoFV that much, but after getting killed by all of the other [games and characters] many times, you get the patterns down easier. It's just the random bullets and the hell that is a mountain of death I watch out for.

And I didn't realize the netplay patch was ZUN official.

I've actually never lost a life to Marisa, maybe it's because the stars stand out more, maybe it's because her theme's crappy. Reimu's spell with the squares pisses me off though.
I'd love to go against you on PoFV, but I'm firewalled....

In SWR news, I had no idea you could edit the player deck until just a couple of days ago. Now I finally know what the button commands are for the techs.

Who do you main in SWR? I just play whoever, but I'm best at Alice for some reason.

I'm completely useless during a Solo runthrough. Or maybe because it's because I was using Youmu, who is pretty hard to use in the first place.

And I have an Extra mode run. While not as good as I could do, it's the first one I remembered to record a replay of.

ARRRGH. I just made one more runthrough of Extra mode, and made it to Hourai Doll (her last normal Spell Card) before being ruthlessly cut down. I even qualified for Imperishable Shooting.

Oh! Scarlet Weather Rhapsody? That's a fun game, yes. My main is Suika, because for some reason she's easy for me to use for some reason. :D Also, I have every official touhou game that has been released for some time now. The game that I pretty much have trouble with is Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. The bosses are very annoying to beat, and I can't get through Patchouli's stage without using all my continues. :? I think Hong Meiling is Win by the way, lol. :D

You'd be surprised at how many times I've failed each one of those Spell Cards and normal attacks to get to that point. Hell, for that replay that I talked about, the only reason why I got to Hourai Doll in the first place was because I was trying to do a live recording of it while doing commentary - that shunted my avg. FPS to 40 or 50. I couldn't even get the replay done because of the lack of space on my HDD, so that's why Hourai Doll absolutely slaughtered me.

Also, trying to clear Hard or Lunatic difficulty Spell Cards really helps, as the faster moving bullets help you adjust to the speed used in Extra mode. I still can't beat a lot in Extra mode, I've never been able to beat all three of EX-Keine's cards in one go, and Honest Man's Death is still a mystery to me.

And a PCB ReimuB replay. I'm a complete ➈ when it comes to Youmu, apparently.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything that lags that much, although I might try keeping over 9000 halo windows minimized and see if that helps.
Also, there's another SA demo available from ZUN's site, I'm downloading it atm.

I've unlocked a few characters in SWR, epicness has occurred. I have yet to see suika though...
I still can't beat story mode without continuing, but apparently, it saves replays when you continue, so....

It's a PoFV joke. In the manual, on a picture describing the play field ZUN has Cirno overlayed with that symbol, and in the description is the Japanese word for idiot. That, combined with Icicle Fall -easy-...

If I can figure out how to set the netplay up, I'll fight.

In other news, I am really starting to loathe Last Spells now. Hell, some Last Words seem easier to me (*cough*Deflation World*cough*). Also, f you, Hourai Doll. I don't think I'll ever be able to cap that one without slowdown help. I get close, but I always miss something if attacks come from more than two directions. Which is why I can never cap Marisa's Milky Way/Asteroid Belt series on Hard or higher, even though it is probably weaker in difficulty than say, a couple of Reisen's normal attacks on Normal.

I overcorrect too much now. I bump into everything.

I advise you don't try it on PCB or EoSD, though, because their counterbomb timing is far harsher than the others. IN with Border Team is the easiest way for you to see the timing, because if everything clicks correctly, you have almost a full second to react, rather than a tenth of one.

Counterbombing is pretty much the only way I can do a 1cc with standard lives.

I just finished SWR's easy mode entirely.
I'll upload replays another time, and I did actually manage to do it without retrying once.

Edit: I think this was the one, cheapass Yukari ftw.

Personally, in Story Mode, I think the title of "cheapest" goes to either Reisen's Spell Card obliterator or Alice's piercing doll lazers. Not much can spell weird more when you can take out some of your foes' most powerful Spell Cards with a 1-cost card of your own, or you can essentially ignore any sort of danmaku-destroying defense with a long-range attack.

It's too damn easy to lose skillz in Touhou (or is that forget what the hell you have to do?).

In other news, ReimuA's hax in SA has been fixed. I wanted to see the Final boss die to that... Also, wtf with the wth difficulty in Stage 3 Lunatic? The only Lunatics I've played are IN and PoFV, but the SA one is miles above them. Onis seem to love haxxoring, I guess.

SA is pretty disappointing having played the demo another few times.
The only considerable improvement is the advanced graphics, and they still don't extend into the foreground. I just hope there's more IN and PoFV style gameplay in future games.

To put it simply, Lunatic PoFV is supreme lunacy. I miss when I think I should have been hit, and get hit when I think I missed.

Same thing goes to Supernatural Borders in PCB--how the heck do I dodge EVERY single bullet with it on and me charging through the bullets, but get hit by something right after. I don't get how I managed to get up to the shadow on Yuyuko's last Spell Card in the red maelstrom with the barrier on.

You could probably buy them from an Asian importing site - iirc they're around $25 USD apiece.

I also wish to yell out to the heavens at my inability to off Yuyuko without suffering major life loss. Damn glutton ghost. Partly it's due to my own stupidity, but more importantly, I either have to not be on the bus or I need to be able to counterbomb faster. I've gotten less nine-ball against Youmu, thankfully, and better at taking out the Prismrivers.

Argh at the replay--not only because I lost on the final card, but because of the beginning of Stage 6. No firing, no moving = me at AFK watching my brother's laptop playing an episode of Kitchen Nightmares.

Why the hell would you want an instruction manual? You move with the arrow keys, shoot with Z, bomb with X, focus with Shift and skip dialogue with Ctrl. Dodge the bullets, shoot the enemies. One shot kills you, but you'll survive if you bomb just as the bullet hits you. That's all you need to know.
Oh, and go here for story and English patches.

I'd love to have an EEE PC to play Touhou on. Too bad they're so expensive. ;_;

Torrent sites if you want to have it now, search for it on an import site if you want to actually pay. As for being like Galaga, kind of, but there are a whole lot more bullets in patterns, loli girls and faeries in place of bosses and enemies respectively, and a scoring system that relies on your ability to get as close to bullets as possible.
