I can totally vouch for this, I really wish I started with a full area. I tried switching a few weeks ago but found it really hard with the 10,000+ PC I already have with the small area. Start full before it's too late!
I have a history of carpal and RSI, and when i switched to the tiny box area, I quickly started feeling the sharp pains in my wrist. With full tablet surface, I feel very comfortable and even browse desktop with the tablet pen now whenever I can. I can also vouch for better registry as well. I quite like it.

I should just switch to full area already.

So again, why would full area be more beneficial (for anyone other than people trying to fast track it to a sore arm and don't feel like masturbating for hours on end)?

Because if you can be just as accurate with a smaller area, there really isn't any point to using a larger one?
Because you can't.
Also, larger area gives better feedback of your movements, more accurate snapping on small notes and overall more fun and actually less wrist breaking (less grip pressure, more relaxed wrist, NO PAIN!)
Small area doesn't make jumps easier it's a myth, and not really faster enough so it would count for Osu gameplay compared to meduim\full areas in a long run.
uhh... really? I honestly can't agree with the wrist statements. Perhaps it depends on the person, but I've tried using full area or a larger area than what I used to have, and it has been so much more tiring for my wrist, since I have to use it a lot more. And if I try to use my arm instead, that gets quite tiring. With my small area, I have pretty much absolutely no problem playing for hours. The only problem is my left hand failing at streaming. And secondly, larger areas being more fun is completely subjective. It doesn't really make much sense to me anyways, but ok.

Though I will admit that you probably will have more control once you are used to it.

Still, I like my smaller area a lot better

Honestly if your arm is getting tired playing osu! no matter what the map then you have some serious physical problems and you really need to go outside and do something other than playing games.

I'm actually pretty decently fit.

I also play piano competitively, does that make any difference? idk, but I use both my arms and wrist a lot.

Anyways, that was more of a comparative statement. It's more tiring then if I just use my fingers and my wrist. I could essentially say the same thing to you guys about your wrists. I honestly don't find it tiring to use my wrist.

Edit: adding on... when using my small tablet area my wrist barely moves, it's mostly my fingers (my pinky and my ring finger are placed firmly on the tablet). I don't really know if that makes a huge difference or if other people do that as well.

After 10k playcount with tablet, it finally begins

Full, I don't forced porportions either, that makes jumping harder, and more harder to be accurate.

osu was 1280x960

I've been using a tablet for about a day and so far I think I like this setup the most since since I think I'm going to use pen input instead of mouse for most stuff. If I did switch to low res osu I would probably switch over to mouse mode with full speed and acceleration off.

edit: holy balls this is painful.

You'll want to be using full area, or at least 75% of your tablet. Your 'medium' is too small IMO.

Yeah, i played some beatmaps switching between full and small area, and i'm actually more confortable with full.
Also, osu's résolution is 800x600.

What do you guys with full area move to get across the tablet (arms/wrist)? I've tried full, but I feel uncomfortable having to move that much, beyond just the fact that I'm not used to it. I'd like to full area sometime though.

A lot of people use their wrist, but personally, I rest the ball of my wrist on the edge of the tablet and use my fingers to move the pen around. It sometimes gets uncomfortable though.

I personnaly play osu windowed, so i don't have to move too much.

Just upgraded to this from <1/4 of the space used, doing fast star patterns with a tiny area is really rough, but this helps a bit I think

Everyone uses such tiny areas, must be hard.

Edit: Just noticed YayMii and I have the same but reversed settings, kinda funny.
Impossible to get 16:10 at 768p ;_; (it's 1228.8 for the width so I just rounded up)

I'll probably switch to 1152x720 screen area with 1280x720 game window.

You can get more precise mapping by using the Mouse keys
[ Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Make the mouse easier to use ]

First I set the game window to the size I want my tablet to play with (I always use a 16:10 resolution) then I use the mouse keys to get a precise placement. Then I just switch the game to a 16:9 resolution and play on that.

I never change the tablet area. I really wish I had a bigger tablet so I could play on bigger resolutions and match the movements. I find if you're playing with a large resolution the inputs get misplaced because you're not moving the same distance as you are with your tablet.
Please

If you practise enough, you create muscle memory, and you just have to make sure you place your hand in the right place on the tablet everytime when you're using small areas

Not necessarily.

Naturally I can't stand the sensitivity of full tablet area since I'm a high dpi mouse user. (and my screen is small) This area is pretty comfortable for me.

Took me pretty long to practice jumps tho.
Dexus
For 3 years I used a tiny area and jumps weren't easy to be precise with. Yeah I was moving around quickly, but when tricky patterns came up I had to grip my pen to death to make sure I was precise. I realized playing full tablet just required more use of the arm instead of all fingers. Switching over was difficult at first, but after extensive playing with a full area it's very rewarding. I actually find it more fun too because you can really get into jumps.

I really would advise every play to play full tablet at least for a week to see how they feel about. Reducing the screen are and not the tablet area can make it more comfortable as well (if you're playing windowed that is). Fullscreen you can disabl GPU scaling and then lower the osu! Resolution until you feel comfortable with it.

I tried it once and it felt so wrong. I couldn't even finish a hard map.

1366x768 osu! window & 1920x1080 screen

I'm considering a smaller window and using full area since i'm using almost the entire tablet area that force proportions fits to anyways.

I used to have an area similar to Cookiezi's (my old area) and I noticed that my cursor was super-shaky when I played. It may have been my grip, but I noticed that it became much more steady and landing jumps were more reliable when I changed back to the settings that were default on my laptop (the screencap I posted earlier is replicating those settings on my desktop).

I use just about 1/3 of my tablet.

Question of all those full area players out there. 1. How big is your tablet?
2. How the hell can you only move your wrist if your get a jump with a 4 corners of the screen? My wrist hurts when I bring it to the bottom right hand corner (my hand is around bottom middle-right hand side of the tablet), and my pen gets too high for it to register when I move my pen to the top of my tablet.

If you think about it the larger your tablet area the more accurate your movements will be. Your margin of error should go down, That said I play on a full tablet with a smaller window as with dual screen's stuff sometimes tries to open behind the game but won't appear on top so I have to spend ages doing Alt+Tab to get be able to Insert osu! to the hidden Icon's tray. This issue only happens on Dual screen's not sure why.

Some people must be moving their pen less than two centimeters! At the same time, "full area" is sometimes too big... Really depends the your tablet. On my (slightly old) Wacom Bamboo - Medium, this area that I use is 11cm wide. I figured I would start at a reasonable size... One where it forced me to move my hand. Something that I read a while back about handwriting said that some people move their whole arm when writing and some just move their fingers... You're more likely to have messier handwriting if you write with your fingers supposedly. I write with my fingers but I try to force myself to a larger area on Osu so maybe it'll actually be useful to me one day with my drawing!

I'm pretty sure that small precise repetitive movements with your wrist is a fast track to RSI anyway.

1920x1080 btw. I've no idea what the benefit of having force proportions off would be. I don't like moving up and down my tablet as much as left/right so square would be a nightmare!

I'm still a noob but I find jumps fairly easy to hit accurately at this size. I'm struggling a little on smaller circles on some maps with HR so I can't imagine wanting to have a smaller tablet area!
