It is always funny when you get attention without expecting it. It is even funnier when a string of watered down articles totally changes the context of the attention. A good job by LuigiHann, m980 and the team involved in creating this storyboard and making it possible, of course!

gonintendo - no linkback to osu! (only youtube video)
That's a video from the fan-made game 'OSU! Phoenix Wright'
gamsetwatch - adapted from gonintendo (in a good way), working link, correct name but incorrect capitalisation

kotaku (au) / kotaku (us)- copied from gonintendo, has working link, but incorrect capitalisation still!

escapistmagazine - good article, 1/2 links to osu! working, incorrect capitalisation again

court-records - link to osu!, link to beatmap, well thought article, proof that author has actually played it. still incorrect capitalisation and no '!' for osu!. relatively good job!

joystiq - newer videos, but no source or mention of osu!.

halolz - video, absolutely no reference or mention of osu!.

vgcats - a small mention with backlink to OSU >.>

It is nice to see more publicity, but you do have to question if half the people that "wrote" these articles looked further than 30 seconds of watching a youtube video. Last time I checked you should at least do a but of research before writing something like this up? Maybe I'm living in the past...

Discuss :).
Azure_Kite
I agree; more publicity is good for osu as a whole. I lol'd when I noticed gonintendo had the wrong name as the title which was only picked up by a commenter later.

Man, I wish a dream project like this could happen!
They are living in the past, not you, peps
abalee
Grat that more people would know osu! :)

but they should know more before writing this article :(

Dream projects are what we do around here, after all ;).

Escapist Magazine gets bonus points for actually finding the To Each A Tempo fanfiction and linking to that.

I'm a little sad that nobody quite gets that the level exists and is playable, but what can you do.

Also, while the storyboard was my idea, m980 deserves 300% more credit than me for actually making it.

They used a video with autoplay? Great way to show off a game

There should have been 100s too, so they could see the other parts of the storyboard
Doomsday
im unsurprised that map got this much outside attention. its the kind of map that would do that :)

good job on that guys. one of the best osu! maps out there
YoshiKart
The map's popularity was inevitable. :)
Kitsunemimi
I'm sure there are a bunch of random forums out there with tidbits of osu! too....
Daru
Oh, that's pretty awesome.
To be honest, the absolute last place I'd expect to see osu! mentioned (and praised) is on Escapist Magazine, so that was a bit surprising to me. Nonetheless, it's pretty awesome to see osu! getting around.

Though, all I get searching osu on google is still "Ohio State University".
Starrodkirby86
Gonintendo... >:(

Otherwise, this is pure awesome. *_* Hopefully people take this and seem to search for Elite Beat Agents Phoenix Wright or something and stumble upon this. Looks like Kotaku also messed up, or is their something I don't know about there...?

Bah. This is awesome though. >w<

Good things :3
And...

What else that I should say?
It's good.

Sweet stuff, and with LH we know that just about everything becomes sweet.

Now let's get the Japanese media's attention and this game would have popularity shooting up the skies. (sweat)

I came in here expecting an official announcement by Capcom and everything. Thanks a lot, guys.

Another one, or not?

I just looked at old polls at court-records and a old poll was "If AA's characters were going to be plugged into a different genre, which would you prefer?" and "Elite Beat Lawyers rhythm game" got 404 votes :P (13%) Although i want "Castlevania Style Fran's Whippity Whip Adventure"!

I used autoplay because I thought no one would be wanting to see me fumbling around being a nublet(even though I had perfect'd that map at least a dozen times at that point)

Still, I'm glad the map is getting so much attention. IT'S A PIECE OF GODDAMN ART AND SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN EBA2 WITH GLORIOUS ROYALTY CHECKS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED IN IT'S CREATION

I personally agree with him :/ the vast majority of maps feel like a whole different game than EBA. Like people are just trying to concentrate on difficulty rather than a good map(the word deathstream comes to mind)

iNiS created Ouendan so it would make sense that they also mastered the making of beatmaps; Play one of their maps and you just get the feeling that the beatmap is "real" when compared to most of the beatmaps here in osu!

Being first != being the best.

Let's drop that topic.

DSMN is supposed to feel like an Elite Beat Agents level, and it apparently does, and that's what matters. :)

I didn't mean that everyone should stop making maps to songs they like,i meant more like that we need new mappers that like other kinds of music and they map those songs they like......
But getting a map ranked is very hard for a new mapper...... :|
Gens
We need less weeaboos. That's the point :|
LuigiHann
No no, we need more non-weeaboos.

Also somebody should tell that commenter that he can sort by genre and choose "rock" to find mostly English rock songs.

Good luck getting your map modded without the "crowd" on your side. Maps that are popular are popular either by word of mouth (fairly rare, mostly applies to already well-known members of the community) or because modders see a song they like. Not a map, a song.

You can map something that the "crowd" doesn't like, but trust me, it will be an uphill battle to get attention, especially if you're not well-known as a mapper yet.

There isn't any top-down approach to fixing this problem; the best option would be to increase the breadth of interests in the community, as LH noted. Is osu! inherently a "Japanese" game? In some senses, yes (look at the name). But it doesn't have to be all J-Pop, or all Video Game music, or all Rock music.

I think this map was the most fun I have had on Osu!... challenging (at least for me) - and so interactive!
I would really like to see a few more maps of this style - maybe i should set it as a challenge for myself one day...

That's why I don't map anything. I'm tired of those almost identical beatmaps all the time, but I won't even try to do something different, since I'm pretty sure that even if my hipotetical beatmap is wonderful, creative, intelligent (something I doubt it would be, because...well, I never made one and I don't think I am a beatmapping genius or something like that) anyone will care about it because it's not J-pop or another Miku beatmap.

Anyway, this beatmap is wonderful (the one with Phoenix Wright, of course). One of the few that deserved a 10,0 from me.

Okay...

Protip: You can't please everyone.
Protip: You may not be able to please everyone, sure, but the fact that so many maps from one select area exist turns off a whole crowd of people from the game.

Nobody's saying to map what you don't like, it's just that the people who like stuff that isn't all that we've seen before usually don't map it enough compared to the excess of anime/Miku maps.

btw grats to m980, luigihann, and others for all the attention they've gained. Well deserved.

To be honest, it upsets me that people turn away from the community just because of the high volume of J-Pop maps. Instead, they should come along and map some non J-Pop songs. Sure, they may have a harder time in the modding process, but it's not impossible and the problem will not be solved if we don't have a lot more of those people bucking up and sticking around.

I always respected you a lot for your work, and it looks like you, considered personally, don't deserve the same respect.
So everyone who disagrees with you is stupid? Intolerance is the true stupidity.

You must have walked away with something different than I from what peppy said. My impression was, it is downright silly to fit (or "stereotype", if you will) an entire community into one persona, and allow that gross generalization to prevent you from making any effort to express yourself. i.e. don't be so quick to "give up" just because the odds are not in your favour, etc.

I think you missed the point. Why would you stop in your tracks on submitting a non-jpop map because in your words "noone will care about it"? That doesn't help the problem at all. Why don't you try submitting a map - you might be surprised at the positive response you will get even if it isn't some computeroid singing horribly out-of-tune anime cr... songs.
Aeris_old
Well, I said this because I saw some boring beatmaps that were full of stars probably just because they were like the majority, they followed the standard set nowadays in osu! for beatmaps. And others were completely ignored just because they were different. There are people who are trying to revert that trend, that's true, it's there for everyone to see. But to get them ranked they have to wait for the TONS of anime/Miku/Touhou/J-pop stuff to be ranked first, since they have TONS of stars. That's what disencourages me.

I am that kind of person that likes to swim against the stream. It's annoying to see that 80% of the beatmaps are very similar, and even the others almost never run from the obvious. If I started to beatmap, probably I would burn my mind thinking in different things. Different rhythms, mostly, since there are a lot of talented beatmappers in the game that put interesting and creative patterns in their creations, and that's what annoys me most: the outstanding evolution of them in creating interesting patterns doesn't match their choices of songs, that are usually boring and repetitive. You all probably can count using only your hands the beatmaps that are with songs that aren't:

- From asian musicians;
- From english-speaking countries;
- From animes, games and stuff related.

I would like to make experiences...classical music (not remixed versions, you know), for example...why not? We have a world full of different people and countries, hundreds of genres...and we'll be limited just with some of them? I want to clarify that I LOVE anime, but it doesn't mean that I ONLY love anime. Everything has a limit, and play things almost identical everyday seems mine.

But I agree when some of you say I shouldn't give up without try, at least once. So, that's what I'll do. I'll try to map something, and I'll put all my effort doing it. In the worst cenario, at least I could say "I told you!", and that's a line I say very often, one of my favourite ones.

Sorry if I was confuse, I'm at work and there's some crazy guy yelling at me right now.

Aeris wrote:

Because classical music has a tendency to suck timing wise.
Aeris_old

adam2046 wrote:

That was only an example...I could use "mambo" or "samba" in that sentence, I only wanted to say that there are lots of musical genres that are ignored...but yeah, I agree that probably is difficult to map classical music, but there were songs I personally considered unmappable and someone did a good work with them. So...I think it's worth to try, at least. =D
