Blame MM. :D

Though, I was referring to our specific W:L ratio we have with each other. ;P

EDIT: Also, I have a crapton of high-VR players on my list now. If anyone wants in on my stalker matches, just tell me and I'll start posting in #videogames when I do them.

That's 10 PM EST, since it's 9 PM Central.

I'm considering starting it one hour earlier, though, to make it easier for people to play longer.

10PM? Gonna need to hole up alone in my basement and sit beside my router to get a good connection there late at night. xD
How long does it usually go until?
Aside from the rules in the original post, anything I should know?

It varies. Sometimes it can be as long as 3+ hours, sometimes as short as 1-2 hours. As far as any additional rules go, please add kartparty to your highlights so you'll know when we're starting or when you can join in (if there ends up being connection issues or if we're starting up a new set).

More on the Skype thing: though it's completely optional, we'd love it if you could join us on there so we can rage at each other in real time :P

Oh yeah... The osu! Mario Kart 7 community code is over at the Nintendo 3DS Club thread, if you haven't grabbed it already. It'd also help to grab some of the friend codes there since we usually go on Worldwide if there's 4 players or less.

Uhh... Yeah... I think that's pretty much it. Everything else is usually discussed in-game. Hope to see ya there!

I dunno what you mean by adding 'kartparty' because I've never done this before. I'll have to look around the multiplayer stuff before tomorrow I guess.

My computer's in my room on the top floor of the house and the router's in the basement. Chances are, if I want a good internet connection, I'll need to be in the basement but that's another thing I'll have to test out. How do you join rooms in Skype, never done that before either.

Whose friend code, yours?

I just colored the important parts ^^

One person (usually me or mm) starts a call and adds others on their friend list to it. If you want, you can go ahead and add me on there. (Skype name: soaprman)

As for friend codes, you don't need to add everyone, just as long as you've added someone in the group if we play worldwide. I'll add you if you're playing with us tomorrow night.
Justykanna
I am amazed at myself at how long it took me to do all that...
I've 'favourited' the osu! community in Mario Kart 7 and added the kartparty to the osu! in game highlighter (thank you bomber).
Hopefully I'll be ready to go tomorrow.

Remember to hang out in #videogames too. That's the channel we use to set things up.

Kartparty in 30 mins, blah blah blah. Make sure to get your chargers ahead of time *nudges Ekaru to add that to the OP*

So... what was up with that lag during Rainbow Road? Lol. Anyway, great party as always (pieguy, stop haxing!).
pieguyn
I really hope I can find a way to get better internet, otherwise I probably won't be able to play in many more of these for a while T T
(I'll still be around IRC and watch some of the worldwide races, but I'll just DC a lot)

saving a star in 1st to dodge a lightning and then also dodging a blue by luck isn't haxing >_<

Actually, that's the first time I've ever dodged a blue in MK7 o-o
NaomiMinette
My Stars usually get Lightning'd when I try to save them ._.
pieguyn
I was hardly paying attention to the top screen to make sure I used the star in time, lol :P
Justykanna
Was a fun first time for me, regardless of being close to (if not) last every race.
Part of it is I dunno how the shortcuts and tricks that most other seem to know too though. =P

I'll probably come next week.

It's not like you can't look up the shortcuts :P Also, some tips:

* MT (mini-turbo) whenever it's relevant.
* When drifting, hug the inner part of the turn as much as possible, though be careful when doing this when there's no wall.
* (This was mentioned during the kartparty, but I'll repeat it here anyway.) When getting shot out of a cannon, hold Down to get a speed boost during flight.
* Not sure if you knew this already, but you can trick off of glider ramps to get a slight speed boost.
* Stay behind someone long enough to get a draft/slipstream (it's basically a huge speed boost that lasts for a short while). BE CAREFUL WHEN TRYING TO DO THIS WHEN SOMEONE'S HOLDING AN ITEM BEHIND THEM AS WELL AS DURING TURNS!
bomber34
Too bad i couldn't join, because of the time :/

Well I can't exactly memorize them all.

I dunno what you mean by mini-turbo.
I know to hug inner part of ramps but I usually don't do it if there's someone nearby who can push me off. I tend to use karts that are light with high acceleration so bumping me off isn't exactly difficult.
Never knew about the holding down part. Someone said to hold something but I didn't hear em.
I do trick off of any sort of ramp when I can. Stages like Rainbow Roar when the bumps are sorta random I tend to miss them all.
I didn't actually tend to stick behind people because they can just move, unlike computer players.

MTs are the sparks you get while drifting. As for practicing drifting... Here are the courses I recommend practicing drifting on:

-Airship Fortress - in that U-turn at the beginning, practice until you can consistently go between the moles and the wall. It helps a lot with your precision.
-Bowser's Castle
-Neo Bowser City for obvious reasons
-Cheep Cheep Lagoon - you need to learn how to drift between the clamshells and the wall if you don't want that course to turn into an automatic not-good-placing
-Waluigi's Pinball, because it has very tight turns that are great for this.

Anyways, once you get decent lines and get a good kart combo together, the most important thing to learn is good item management. Mainly, the following points:

-Get into the habit of looking at the bottom screen regularly. This takes some practice; I recommend starting out by learning to do it on the straightaways. Once you get that down you can do cool things like:
-If someone has a red shell and you have nothing to defend with, stay behind them until it's safe. Else they'll just nail you.
-If you're close behind 1st and see a blue shell pop up, be prepared to brake in case they try to brake to nail you with a Blue Shell.
-Some people in 1st brake regularly. Then 2nd brakes. Then 3rd brakes. Then 4th brakes. Then 5th brakes. Then the person in 6th suddenly becomes 1st with a Blue Shell and you're all screwed. This is why you should only brake in 1st if the person in 2nd is literally right behind you; at high level play, if they have enough time to react they *will* brake, and said scenario will occur.

-If you have a red shell and the person ahead of you has a Tanooki Tail, wait for them to lose their tail before firing your red shell. They'll be an open target the moment they lose that tail.
-If you get a Lightning and the course has a huge gliding section, save the Lightning for that gliding section. It'll be worth it.
-If you get a Blue Shell, always wait a few seconds to see if the braking scenario I mentioned earlier occurs. It doesn't happen much in our rooms, but in like 40k VR rooms it happens all the damn time.

-It's usually better to leave bob-ombs behind you than to try to snipe somebody with them. It's 100x easier to get someone with a dropped bob-omb than a snipe.
-When possible, save your bananas for blind spots. Don't be that person that always winds up using their bananas right before an item box because they weren't paying attention.

Then there's some fancier stuff you can do, but a lot of that involves figuring out who has red shells and what's safe and blahblahblah. Also, I think that's enough for you to practice for now, anyways. ;P
Justykanna
Holy what in the... xD

Oh. Yeah, usually people I know refer to it as drifting. Not really MT. That I do on a pretty regular basis. Not 'quite' so worried about that as item management.

I really do like the karts I've been using. Huge acceleration. Just not a ton of top speed and lighter.

Next week's actually gonna be the only other week I'll be able to go because the week after that, I start school. University I'm going to has no wifi in my residence. =(

No no, miniturbos are something you GET from drifting. Drifting's, well... drifting :P

Awwww. :(

Oh yeah, I have to start looking to see if the colleges I'm thinking of transferring to have WiFi. That's, like, a pretty big factor for me.

oh that's how you do it >< I wondered how everyone was passing me during cannons, but never found that out..
NaomiMinette
Yeah... I didn't figure out about that till people started passing me back then. I was like "What? How are they passing me?", then I experimented and found out XD
Justykanna
Yeah, I'm not happy that residence in the university I go to has no wifi in the residence... None of the residences have wifi...
Then in the lecture halls, you need a stupid program of some form running in the background to get internet so I can't get wifi on my phone and, if I wanted, my N3DS.
Least not in any way I've found... -_-
mm201

Blazevoir wrote:

You don't actually get a speed boost from this. You go higher into the air. This can easily be turned into a speed boost since descending speeds you up, but there are a few places (Bowser Castle) where being higher up puts you at a disadvantage.

@Justykanna: Look up world record and other high plays on Youtube. It'll give you lots of ideas for strats and let you learn about shortcuts you may have never known existed. Some shortcuts used for time trials can't easily be used on wi-fi, and some wi-fi shortcuts can't be used in time trials, because of availability of mushrooms, and because some are extremely difficult to pull off, but it's a good start.

On the matter of MTs, try to make as many of them as you can, and try to get orange MTs whenever possible. (If you keep drifting after the blue sparks appear, they will eventually turn orange and you will get a bigger boost.) Once you've finished making an MT, try to make another one. Let go of R for a moment to release your MT and begin drifting again. For instance, you should be able to make 2 orange MTs off the first piano turn in Music Park, and 3 orange MTs off the downward spiral in Airship Fortress.

MTing on straights can be done, but it requires perfect technique to get only a tiny benefit from it. You shouldn't worry about this.

Landing into a slide makes charging an MT easier. Pressing R before moving your stick also makes charging an MT easier.

I can understand Airship Fortress, but I've never been able to pull that off on Music Park ._. I only get 1 each of orange and blue...

You're likely being sloppy with your timing of left/right and pressing it too early. Try waiting until the moment you touch the ground to press left/right; it'll charge much quicker. Note that lining up the second jump properly when doing it this way takes some practice.
mm201
If you make a blue MT (or at least try) at the item line, you'll get your first red sooner.
NaomiMinette
...Derp, why did I overlook that...

I always try to MT wherever I can. Just times like Rainbow Road, I skid too close to a corner and end up falling, pretty much sealing my fate in last place.
NaomiMinette
There's nothing wrong with taking more of an outer approach on a turn when drifting/MT'ing. You really should only drift as inward as possible if you KNOW it's safe.
Justykanna

Blazevoir wrote:

Yeah, that's the approach I took last week. Didn't work out great. =P
Oh well, we'll see how I do tonight.
Soaprman
Eventually you'll get a good feel for how tightly you can safely take corners. Make sure you're not in someone's crosshairs when you're hugging the inside of the curve or you might just get knocked into oblivion...

But yeah, it's really just practice. A lot of us have skills from earlier kart games that transfer here pretty well... like, not mastery of the controls but mastery of how to approach the tracks. The fundamentals haven't changed.

Not in the residence areas.
And with the ones in the lecture halls / cafe, you need a program on your computer to run in the background in order to get internet (university username and password). This is something both my iPhone and N3DS don't like and have great difficulty getting internet with.
So I sad. Especially because I only started playing with you people two weeks ago. -_-'

Is there a browser-based log-in option available? Though, to get those to work on the 3DS you first have to fail a connection test before the browser will let you sign in, and at my school I can use the browser but can't play MK7.... Gah. Try talking to the IT guys and see what they have to say about it (though there's a good chance there's nothing they can do ;_;).

If all else fails you'd have to go off-campus for WiFi access, so that'd pretty much limit you to the Friday sessions... XP

I'm actually thinking of moving the Friday session an hour earlier after this week's session to make it easier for you guys to show up. Saturday's session will stay set in stone, but with the Friday session we can experiment a bit until we get a good compromise.

'K, let's try 5 PM Central Time again. Just two things to note:

-Registered osu! users get priority over those who aren't registered in osu! (just in case we max out again).
-This will be Worldwides. Yes, we might end up with 7 people in the same WW room. However, at this specific time you're going to wind up with lots of people coming and going and it's a lot easier to deal with this in WWs. Of course, we will be starting in a low-VR room for the lowest possible waiting times.

Speaking of which, everybody who wants to join should add either Blaze or myself ahead of time so you can just tag us after we tag the low-VR person, whoever we wind up using. Just tell us your FC at the start of the kartparty and we'll add you back.

No, really, 5 PM is before dinner time for us Westerners. We need something flexible to work with us having to AFK at any moment, and even if we have to deal with some randoms it's just easier that way. Plus, this way we can get started immediately so that the Europeans can get as many races as possible in before having to go to bed.

BTW, the main session is still at 9 PM on Saturdays. These will be community races if all goes well.
bomber34
Sounds okay for me ._.

CNM: Explanation was posted earlier in this thread, he should be back soon enough
Inori: Hurt himself
Gloop: For some reason his 3DS's battery was in the fucking trash can. He'll be there next week.
Hitler: Butthurt

And of course Yoshi came back from the dead last night. ;P

You know the situation's not that great when there are schools advertising the fact that they have campus-wide WiFi. >_>;
I think this university actually says that too. o_O
Residences are the only places without Wifi though.
...Well, I think a couple residences have it. Not mine though.

'K, Friday kartparties are now permamoved to 5 PM on Fridays (I'll edit the post later when I'm not lazy). Oh, and whether we do WWs or communities depends on how many people show up.
NaomiMinette
There's a huge chance I won't be around for both kartparties this weekend. An MMORPG I've been waiting for is doing a stress test this weekend (and this weekend only), and even though I won't actually be able to do a whole lot seeing as it's only pre-alpha, I still may stick around to chat with others who were also looking forward to playing it.

Never mind... There was surprisingly a lack of things to do compared to a video I've seen, so I should be able to make both kartparties now.

I actually remembered earlier, at like 3:30 PM. I blame my brother's Rachet and Clank.

Also, I posted a "I forgot" in #videogames and, like, my name wasn't capitalized. I was, like, soooooo offended, dude. I am, like, so going to sue.

I was busy with other stuff today, sorry. I'll try to make it tomorrow, but no guarantees ever since I got interested in speedrunning Wind Waker.
NaomiMinette
I want to replay Wind Waker (even despite me 100%'ing the game like 3 times already), but my GBA SP's being stubborn, and I can't really rely on my GBA since lolnobacklight.

Right, uhh... We didn't have one today (yesterday?) btw.

I probably can't be there tomorrow
maybe I'll just be late, I don't know yet ><
