i downloaded the driver update thing from dell, and saved in the 'drivers' folder and extracted it. i theeen installed what i assumed to be the driver since it said ATI driver and restarted cause it told me to...but it didnt change osu at all and made everything on my desktop huge...like the osu window, it would have a bar around it where i could see my desktop, now it takes up the whole screen...i tried changing the screen resolution, but that cut off some things, like the start button on one setting. the screen resolution is at the same that it was before i installed the driver...

I've come across something really awesome. Please hear me out.

My osu! now has the ability to spike randomly for the next 5-6 seconds, during which I take my headphones and throw them on to the ground in frustration. Strangely, it doesn't happen on my laptop, probably because it has a much better GPU than my desktop.

After getting hit by this spike numerous times, I figured it was either due to the fact I now have 50-60 combo bursts or my desktop's GPU is starting to grow old.

But here's the catch: I do remember having 50-60 combo bursts and not once osu! spiked on me until recently.

Either way, I still need to observe when exactly it happened. Last it spiked a combo burst was just leaving the screen, but I don't want to be too sure until I observe this problem another five times.

my osu! has been having weird lags lately. when I start playing osu! it stays at 60fps and then drops to around 30fps for a couple seconds and then goes back up to 60fps. the cycle repeats itself. I tried restarting my computer but it doesn't seem to fix anything

Ok, updated report.

My osu! spikes randomly. As in, spikes so badly I can't move and play and I die afterwards. If the song ends and I'm not dead, the song doesn't end.

I'm still getting the "100 second lagspikes". That is, the game often stalls for a moment at a point about 100 seconds after starting a beatmap (any map). This doesn't happen all the time though. When it does, I check the memory usage of osu! in the Windows Task Manager, and it's always significantly higher than normal until I restart:

I think one time it reached over a GB of memory.

Compare to a fresh restart of the client:

This is happening on the public build. It was also happening on the test build as of a few weeks ago, but I don't know about right now. I'm not sure how to cause the memory usage to ramp up, so I can't exactly just load up the test build and check real quick.
Zerostarry
Something went very wrong with my PC a week ago.. and I had to fix it by reinstalling windows. I had XP before, now I upgraded to Windows 7

and osu! lags terribly now, the cursor feels really loose too, I dunno if it's part of the lag or just my mouse settings, but i'm really afraid I can never play osu the same way again, i really love this game ;_;

Lybydose
@Zerostarry:

For mouse settings, try any of the following:

-In game options, check "Enable mouse precision mode"

-Switch frame limiter (F7) to either 120fps or unlimited. 60fps frame limitation sometimes does something weird to mouse movement.

-In Windows mouse settings (Start => Control Panel => View by Small Icons => Mouse => Pointer Options tab) DISABLE "Enhance pointer precision" (this is different from the similar sounding setting in osu!)

Also, your CPU appears to be running at a fairly high temperature, and your video card is shady (nVidia video HP?). Use a can of air to blow dust out of your computer, ESPECIALLY if you've had the computer for a while and never done that, as all the dust can interfere with cooling and cause everything to overheat.

I'm getting the "five-seconds lagspikes". Mine's completely random, and can even happen while playing a beatmap.

However I believe the cause to our lagspikes are the same. Problem is, what is the cause?

Hello. I'm having a problem with my mouse lagging when there's video played.

The only thing I can think of that would cause it is when I upgraded my video card, but I don't understand how. My new video card runs circles around the one I had when Osu! worked fine. Anyone know any way I can fix this, or should I just play with video off?
ambots13
I have the same lag issue with Saphire HD 4350

Is this game not compatible with my new video card?
Timekiller
I started experiencing really heavy lags while playing recently. To the point where game starts resembling some slideshow - playing insanes is VERY fun now. The fun thing is that FPS counter shows something in 120~80 range.
I can't be really sure, but it seems this all started right after OSU! updated a few days ago. Not to mention that the FPS counter itself somehow turned on automatically after that update.

Lags appear occasionaly, last for a while, then disappear. As I wrote that post, for example, at the beginning osu! was lagging furiously, but now FPS counter shows 600-900 fps, and lags disappeared completely, and the game's running VERY smoothly.
Also, everything seems to be a little better if I close Opera and other programs, but - they're not eating any resources except memory (and only 1GB is consumed, checked via taskman), and everything worked just fine even with much more heavy background load less then two weeks ago.

I didn't change/update/install anything into the system for some time before/after lags began, so that can't be the reason. Also tried limiting the framerate to 60/low end PC modes - no luck, no changes at all.

Sys Specs:

Win XP SP2
Core2Duo E2200
NV Geforce 8600GT
2GB Ram

I understand that issue might be because of browser being a bitch and overloading the system while opened on some pages, which together with the hellish air temperature (>30 celsium ATM) would cause something throttle-like in the processor, but temperature is below 45 cels. on CPU and about 60 on GPU (according to everest, BIOS shows something about 30 for CPU), so I don't really think this is the case.

P.S. Digged into the matter deeper while writing this. Lags certainly seem to appear when I have Opera opened on some pages w/heavy animation, because it's eating up the processor, but they appear as well when it is minimized and CPU usage, aside from OSU, is 0. And then again, everything worked just fine until recently, even with the animated pages in the background. Also, seeing lags while FPS shows 350+ is amusing.

P.P.S. While I'm at it, two other bugs, rather minor compared to that one:
1) OpenGL mode seems broken - OSU! would flash with transparency roughly once a second, hence it's nearly impossible to play.
2) While in Multiplayer, when everyone is ready to play, if you hit F5 and, while you're updating, host will start the game, then you'll be back to the multiplayer screen and everyone else would just stall. Encountered this only once, don't know if it's repeatable.

UPD: aaaand osu just crashed while in multiplayer. It seems something is broken after all.
leong124
I found that if your cursor lags/freezes occationally while the game runs smoothly, you can try to optimise the processor scheduling to be "Programs", like this: http://windows-xp-tricks.com/optimize-p ... -speed.php

GameBooster may help too. I finally solved my cursor lag problem by doing this, and I can play at unlimited frame rate with a quite crappy computer.
Espionage724
Made a topic already, but if you have a ASUS Xonar audio card, you should check this out: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60807

Also if you have a Logitech mouse, if your trying to do the 1000Mhz USB Mouse polling driver trick and you have SetPoint installed, make sure to setup SetPoint so that it uses the OS's acceleration instead of SetPoints

my mouse lags, even if i switch between vsync/120 fps/ unlimited.
with video it lags with 60/120 more then unlimited
with no video it lags with unlimited more then 60/120
Actually, it "slides" i move, and after a longer time the mouse moves.

My mouse:

Dpi: 5600
query-rate: 1000 Hz

Osu! sensitivity: 1.5x

my computer:

OS: Win7 64 bit
Graca: Radeon 4650 HD

i think if i can run black ops without lags, i should run osu without lags too.

i'm not realy good at that, but if you need more info tell me...

hope you can help me :D

btw. ingame fps with video 150-250
without video: 300-400

is a repeating left red (Taiko) considered as lag <delay?>?

i've tried to even lift my hands away from keyboard, but it still pressing, but after several times it stop (so it is like automatic left red?)

sometimes it help but sometimes it is annoying

thank you, and sorry if i've posted in the wrong topic

Update : it even happen with a song that never use the big button (so i just use c and v, but those reds are coming)
Lingren_old
Hello, guys, here is my problem:
Taiko's perfomance feels laggy and choppy. But there is no such problem in OSU.
My PC is modern, so the problem isn't in perfomance. Moreover, when I had XP, these lags weren't appearing, unless I obtained
Windows 7.
Changing frame limit didn't really help. Also I don't have proper resolutions for my monitor in OSU settings, there are ones only for wide-screen.
What are probable solutions for that?

My mouse:
Razer Imperator
If anyone else has this problem, the problem is the Razer Imperator. The Imperator has z-axis tracking issues and the slightest tiniest lift while spinning makes the cursor jump down and fucks up the tracking horribly. Pretty useless answering that question now since it's been 4 months since the post, but oh well... I had experienced this problem, too, with my Razer Imperator.

Anyway, I was hoping somebody could tell me why the game lags only on certain specific notes, everytime I play. If I don't play for a long time then I normally don't have this problem, but if I play for a bit, there might be a certain note/point (or more) in the song that lags everytime I play. When I check my video card (nvidia geforce 9600 gso), it feels normal, not overheating. I've also tried with the low-end settings in osu!, all storyboard elements moved, and practically everything closed (including explorer.exe even) but the song I'm playing always lags at certain spots everytime. Generally if the song has a video, the video will also freeze when this happens.
DivineRage
I'm also having mouse lag issues. It just feels like the mouse is dragging whenever I'm running osu. I sit around 450~ fps and I'm using a steelseries Xai. I've been using the same mouse for the past few months and it happens pretty infrequently but it's really bad today and yesterday D: No issues outside of osu and I've restarted my computer and force closed any programs that may be causing issues D:

I haven't recently made any software changes at all so I'm not sure why it would happen. Like I said it's happened before but it's just really frustrating to play when the mouse feels like it's dragging.

Osu! randomly (without me changing any settings at all) started lagging and having choppy gameplay. My computer on everything except osu runs fine. When i type, it lags about 5 sec. behind. And when i open skins to change it, it lags and i cant control it at all.
Also when i play a song and press "skip" the "skip" button stays and wont leave.
My computer recently keeps saying "High memory usage on: Osu!" How can i change this to run smooth? I tried reinstalling and i only have 4,000 beatmaps. Also i use open-gl and 60FPS please help .
Edit: It doesnt do the "3,2,1 GO" either
Edit: Spinners wont show up either and when i spectate it shows the mouse not moving at all and all misses
**EDIT** I believe the main issue with my osu is that its using MORE memory and power than is needs to or ever has in the past. How do i slow down or bring down the memory usuage?
Edot: When i go into skins the FPS goes from 60-65 to 1-3 D:

The mouse lags when I try to play osu. I set it to 60fps and open gl. The lag decreases a bit if I lower the screen resolution, but it still has trouble clicking menu buttons or the circles in the tutorial. Would the Microsoft .NET Framework thing help? It says 32 bit next to it and my laptop has a 64 bit operating system on it.
billy96
Have anyone tried to re-install the mouse driver?
1. Control Panel-> Device Manager
2. Mice and other pointing devices
3. Open your mouse Properties
4. Driver-> Uninstall
5. Reboot (Don't re-plug the mouse)
Works for me, but still lags on beatmap with H.264 encoded video (example), they should use the Fast Decoding Xvid (example) instead >_>

I just upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit. Osu ran perfectly fine on Windows XP.
I literally get 1000+ fps, but the game still feels like it is laggy, same thing happens in full screen, all the effects off, DX, and GL. The limiters don't help either.

Hmm, there's no problems to your drivers. Try disabling Windows Aero (use basic theme instead).
Barhoum
I disabled Aero, and it helped a tiny tiny bit. But it still is no where close to what it was before on XP. It can't be a Windows 7 issue since last night I tried osu on two different laptops and they ran perfectly.

Laptop #1:
OS: Windows 7-64bit Ultimate
Ram: DDR2 2GB (PC-6400)
CPU: Core 2 Duo T2220 @ 1.8ghz
Graphics: Intel GMA x3100

Laptop #2:
OS: Windows 7-32bit Starter
Ram: DDR2 1GB (PC-6400)
CPU: Intel Atom N450 @ 1.66ghz
Graphics: Intel GMA x3150

It probably is a graphics card issue, my friend had the same problem with a GTX 475 (4GB DDR2, Core 2 Duo E7600).
I'll play around with the Nvidia drivers I guess.
MachineWise
Here's a possible fix for bad audio/video lag that is choppy but doesnt affect framerates(where audio sounds like your about to get bsod, it happened in programms outside of osu! for me):

1) check modem and router, turn them off and back on(especially if their really hot) they could be overheating and (speculation) causing your computer to try to make up for the bad connection.

2) reinstall/update your network drivers (win 7 tested only)

I did both to solve this problem (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/4569- ... ndom-times) for more info on how i came to this conclusion, hope this helped anyone!!
Barhoum
Flips, I'm pretty sure that is strangely specific to you. Playing with drivers probably fixed it, not the router/modem.

Also, as a solution to my problem, going full screen completely removes the "fake" lag. I've noticed this in many other programs, like GGPO's FBA emulator. Although I'd rather be windowed, I can finally play the game again.
AlphaLuna87
Okay i've read all through this thread and i've searched in others but haven't been able to find anything to do with my problem.

I have a problem with the audio.
When playing (and sometimes even when going through the menus) the audio jumps or stammers (?) almost the same way speakers can when you move your mobile phone near them (it's hard to put a sound into words lol :| ). At first I thought it was the map I was playing so I deleted it but it is now effecting my older maps that worked fine when I first downloaded them.
I've checked my audio drivers and they are uptodate.
Has anyone else encountered this problem. If so how can it be solved :?:

p.s. my technical know-how is very poor, I was bearly able to find my audio driver, so if the solutions could be as simple as possible that would be great :D
AlphaLuna87
Update

Okay I've experimented around a bit and so far, touch wood *knock knock*, it seems to be working. :D
I saved my 'song file' so I wouldn't loose the maps, then deleted osu! from my computer before re-dowloading the game. so far the maps are all working without the weird high-pitch 'stammer'.
billy96
i have a question, can an audio lag make a lag in-game?

ATI should be something similar.

Video processing devices should be pretty uncommon unless you're hooked up to an HDTV or projector. Look for media center type boxes and digital repeaters between your computer and the display.
Please show me your Nvidia control panel .w.
Also: I have a problem.
When I played osu on old pc (wXP) it was perfect.
Then I got new pc (w7) now i cant play, osu is like shit (more n more lags).
Please Help me ANYBODY ;w;

windows xp requires very little ram and graphic memory o3o, it's also very optimized, while on the other hand, windows 7 utilizes ram better (than vista, still worse than xp >.>) but it really hogs graphics, maybe that might be a reason, =o, suggestion is, try disabling all graphic settings then try it o3o, maybe it'll work, maybe it won't, it can just be something in win7's affecting it o3o, but it's always worth a try~

My Friend has such lag

How this can be fixed?
Winshley
@Louis Cyphre: Tell your friend to run osume.exe. If it doesn't work, your friend's PC might not have the graphic card driver installed.
Shota
I need help. osu is saying I don't have the newest sound card and it never said this before until the update. And I tried changing it making it so it would work but I had no such luck. Can you explain in detail on how to fix this?
delyssss
Getting pretty severe momentary freezes when playing now, mostly whenever I hit F9(loading avatars) or refresh Osu! Direct(loading song icons). It also lags when a beatmap's storyboard loads up new assets.

Used to run fine, only change I made to my system recently was that I upgraded from 8GB to 16GB of RAM, then I started having this issue.

I run Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 in the background, but I always have and that's never caused problems. I checked the CPU usage during the freezes, it's normal and has no spikes in usage when the freezes occur.

Used to run fine, only change I made to my system recently was that I upgraded from 8GB to 16GB of RAM, then I started having this issue.
Sounds like you have bad memory to me. To be safe, check your DPC latency to see if it could simply be a driver issue.

MY DPC latency looks normal, but the issue seems to have fixed itself. I did defragment my hard disk, wonder if that could have helped.

All the points of lag you mentioned seemed to be IO related, so defragging may very well have helped.

Maximum prerendered frames (Nvidia):

ATI should be something similar.

Video processing devices should be pretty uncommon unless you're hooked up to an HDTV or projector. Look for media center type boxes and digital repeaters between your computer and the display.

should b 0 no matter what case for best multiplayer, overall gaming performance

pre rendered frames where made for lower fps to be smoother looking wich causes the cpu to pre render frames infront of the gpu wich should always be disabled aka 0.. for best performance unless ur having a cpu thats atleast 2x as good as ur gpu but even then for a game like osu it should be 0 coz u dont get low fps on those games wich it will be a disadvantage having it enabled at all.. games such as battlefield 3 max settings would love a high pre rendered frames if ur having a great cpu either way 2500k or 2600k less then that pre rendered frames is not recommended......

ATI DOES NOT HAVE PRE RENDERED FRAMES IN THEIR DESIGN,DRIVERS BUT THEY HAVE SMILIAR TO IT. CALLED > FLIP QUEUE SIZE <

At 115 °C it starts to lag, I think the temperature is way too high!
Osu! is running on 1 core, there are no other processes running.

EDIT: I just went to a computer shop and they told me that my graphic card is dying :(
So I need to buy a new one... Maybe a GeForce GT 220 or a GeForce GTS 250.

ur gpu WILL die if those temps stay for long just reassemble the cooling with new cooling paste thats all u can do for now

Yesterday I realized that my ssd was full and I thought hey lets link my 22 gb beatmaps to a normal hdd, to free up space on the ssd.
Now I am getting lags, meaning the game freezes sometimes. It only happens with maps that are on the hdd, maps on the ssd do not lag at all.

other System specs:
C2D E8400
4GB Ram
Radeon HD 4850

I tried to set the priority of osu to very high and switched to opengl, which seems to help a bit but sometimes it still lags.

I am a bit confused, does OSU need to load data from the map while playing it ? Shouldnt it just load everything into memory so that a slow hdd wont cause lags ?

EDIT:
after telling my antivirus not to scan osu-related files it does not lag anymore :)

EDIT 2:
or not :(...

Up to date GPU drivers, PC hardware taken care of (dusted etc.), no changes to system software other than Windows 7 updates, taiko is lagging at high BPM [200+] (both framerate and input).

I hope you understand that nothing has changed at this end, so something *must* have changed at your end :P. Also give the test build a run, since I've been working on win7 timing precision and it is a lot more accurate (less noticeable latency). Although your UO will be off.

Eh... I ran osu! and a browser at a same time, everytime I left osu! for just a while (for browsing on the browser) then I got back to osu!, the game lags everytime any SFX played (such as clicking menu buttons, and hitsounds). What's causing that?
Cieno
Does anyone get random moments of frame rate lag on certain maps?

I notice I have it sometimes while I'm playing, but I don't know if it's the game itself, that particular map or my computer that's causing it. Restarting the game or rebooting my PC never seems to help, and I don't always get it on other maps, so I assume it has something to do with that particular map.

Currently I'm getting it a lot on this one: http://osu.ppy.sh/s/43016

^ On the 5 star map; I'm not sure about the easier one since I don't play it often. The lag doesn't exactly make me miss a lot of notes but it's annoying all the same when I'm trying to enjoy my gameplay but can't. :/

Edit: Never mind, looks like I'm getting this kind of lag on every single map.
Shadnic_old
So I just updated Osu! today, and now everything it's awfully laggy (240 fps). I always ran Osu at 1000+ fps, but now my pointer is so laggy i can barely play at all!. I also noticed that my CPU and GPU are running at 38C and 42C respectively(borderline idle temps where I live) which means they're not being used at all!

Also, my "Softening Filter" option is disabled. Not that I use it, but still.

Any idea what's causing this? Is it just "not-so-good" update?

System specs just in case:
AMD 955 BE
NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti
8GB of RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

If you used to be running on the "unlimited" setting, you would have been switched to the new unlimited during gameplay mode. This means the menus will run at a lower fps in order to save on power and heat. You can change this back in the options if you wish.
Shadnic_old
Here's a screenshot of my Options settings:

Me playing a random beatmap:

And here are my system temps while the mage is on:

As you can see I'm using the Unlimited mode and I'm still getting bad fps.
I've already checked my system to see if anything was not working properly, but everything seems fine...
peppy
I wouldn't call that "bad" fps. If you are seeing issues when running at this fps then something is wrong with your graphics drivers or settings. Please go through them and maybe update/reset to default config.

win7. cursor is little laggy ;_; and fps is always over 1k D:
Nessuka
For some reason now, despite having 300+FPS everywhere, the game's framerate is stuttering horribly, as in when I move the cursor it slows down and goes in steps rather than a smooth tween-type effect.
This has only started happening recently, but I haven't done anything my side.
Evanaire
If you have "disable mouse button during gameplay" switched on, try to switch off, worked for me.
EDIT: Was having movement delay with tablet.
EDIT2: Forget that, maybe I was sleepy, my movement delay lives on.

I found the cause, osu! has trouble with aero, I turned off aero and all became fine.

EDIT: to fix the issue rather than just hide it, using a .BMP (24) file as opposed to other common image filetypes for your desktop background fixes it completely

My Window 7 cursor is still laggy as I hit the combos, hold sliders, and spin the spinners. I tried changing from full screen to window and it worked file, but still as it starting to lag again.

It seems like a heat issue. Try cleaning the laptop fans and make sure they don't get blocked while playing. Play with the laptop on a solid table (or a stand with fans, but you have to be careful it is well designed because some aren't designed for some laptops).

Also you can turn off graphics options (disabling everything but snaking sliders is recommended) and use the frame limiter (120 fps is normally and 'ok' framerate for this game). That way you reduce system stress while playing.
Mikroudz
About week ago I noticed that sliders and hit circles look like 30 fps but cursor is normal. FPS is always 140 with 120 limit and with unlimited 3000-4000. Reboot fixed it. Now after reboot it takes 10 minutes and its same laggy shit. I have 3770k and Amd 7970

I'm also getting cursor lag now with win7 and it's not happening in any other game.

If you're getting lag now and weren't before, go back and check any settings you changed, or any new software/drivers you installed.

08.27 - osu! is dead.
No new software was installed.
No new drivers were installed.
Didn't change any settings for last 3 months.
I have Win 7 with all graphical thingies turned off (it looks like Win 98/2000 now, and it was like this for 1 year now)
But still, before this update - no problem.
After this update - can't play, cause it looks like giving me the last breath.
EDIT: Only noticed now - it takes approx 3-5 seconds to load a selected song. Before it was insta select, or 1 second loading.
PxEclipse
I get ~150 fps less after the last patch. When i start the game with the old exe file without updating, it runs great but i can't play online.
My settings are unlimited fps and 1920x1080 fullscreen. Tried the "low-end pc" setting too.
Can you please fix it? Would be very nice. Thank you.

  • instabile gameplay with continuosly small lags
  • fps drop from 3000+ to 1000+ while playing
  • more processing time while clicking on restart map
any other thing is the same
problem occured after the lag fix update
able to play somehow, but this is a bit annoying

I get something like this each ~20 minutes. This started after 12th Novembers update(at least day before i didn't have it)
But i also noticed that my CPU temperature is pretty high so i gonna buy thermal paste(didn't apply it for 2+years with cooler take off)
I'm interested how many have something like this?

I have exactly the same problem for 1+ years!! But this only happens to me between 400 and 600 combo! Also it does not happen on all maps. For example I had this issue on Love Letter for 3 months, then now I can play it smoothly without any lag, but I have this issue on another maps anyways... I just really do not understand how this lag system works..
Notice that my system temperature is perfect, drivers installed.. I only have this lag problem with osu! and with Unreal Engine games..
Hachiman
I recently add to my desktop a GeForce GT 210 and before that i played osu fine with the integrated graphic card, but now i get lag spikes (type 3) when i'm with chrome open, thing that didn't happend with the integrated graphic card. Obviously it's the RAM Memory available but i want to know why without the video-card i wasn't getting the lag.
btw this is my Dxdiag information.
