Werewolf Game Rules

The Werewolf Game is one of the most popular message board games ever conceived. It is a team game involving Humans and Wolves.

However, it is not a casual game; it's very involved and requires a commitment to play (like Monopoly). Players are required to sign up ahead of time to participate.

Basic Premise

There are several werewolves among a group of ordinary humans. The objective of the game is for the humans to figure out who the wolves are and kill them off before the wolves kill all the humans by voting on a lynching (public execution) each day to take place at dusk.

Basic How-It's-Played

On the first Day, the Host announces the scenario, and introduces the players. After that, play, put as simply as possible, progresses as follows:

Night
The Wolves kill a Human.

Dawn
The Humans awake to find the body of the player the Wolves killed.

Day
The Humans discuss who they think the Wolves are cast lynch votes for players they suspect are Wolves.

Dusk (aka Sundown)
The lynching takes place; the person with the most lynch votes against them is killed in a public execution. This is the humans' primary method for attempting to eliminate Wolves from the game.

This cycle repeats itself until the Humans are all dead (Wolf victory), or the Wolves are confirmed all dead by the remaining Humans waking up in the morning to find nobody died the previous night (Human victory).

In-Depth Explanation

A bit more interested? Here's everything you'll need to know. Sit down, this explanation is going to take a while (but it's so worth it once you start playing).

First, there's a signup period. The Host announces their intention to hold a Werewolf Game and tells everyone when the signup deadline is.

The more people that sign up:

* The more Wolves there will be
* The more Auxiliary Roles will be used

After this, the Host randomly selects each player's role (see "Roles," below) and sends a Role ID to each player via Private Message (PM) (this means you need to have knowledge as to how PM'ing works before you play!!). This is the only positive proof you have of your role, and you cannot forward it to other players - it will result in getting kicked out of the game!!

The Host announces when each time phase begins, and at what real time the next phase will hit.

Here's the detailed explanation as to what happens during the phases:

Night
ALL PLAYERS must remain SILENT on the board during a Night phase. (You can still get in kahoots with other players via other private methods like PM at Night if you want, but you cannot speak on the board.) The Wolves PM each other and discuss who the kill will be tonight. The pack's spokeswolf will PM the Host, informing them who the target is.

Dawn
The Host informs the players who died. That person is out of the game (they can't talk anymore, but they're certainly welcome to watch and see how the rest of the match goes).

Day
The Host announces when (in real time) Sundown is, and the players are free to say whatever they want until that time. ALL PLAYERS (Humans and Wolves!!) must submit a lynch vote before Sundown (if you don't, you get a "phantom vote" that counts against you the next day).

How Lynch Voting Works
During a Day phase, all players who are still alive must submit a vote for a player they suspect is a Wolf (Wolves must submit votes also to remain unsuspicious; however, they're probably all going to vote for humans.)

Voting Rules
* Your vote MUST be public and posted in the thread for all to see, so be sure of your decision. It helps the host a great deal if you cast your vote in bold text.

* If you feel you've made a mistake with your vote, you can change your vote before Sundown arrives.

* If you deem it tactically necessary, you can vote for yourself or refuse to vote with the understanding that it will earn you a Phantom vote for the next day.

How Phantom Votes Work
If you refuse or fail to vote before Sundown, you will receive an automatic Phantom Vote that will count against you the next Day phase.

What is Considered "Fair Play"
The only thing you're not allowed to do is show other players your Role ID. Other than that, EVERYTHING is fair play - wolves claiming to be humans, humans claiming to have auxiliary roles (see "Roles" below), and deciding who to believe. Players can form alliances if they like, through either public board or PM (although that's always risky, as you could be forming an alliance with a Wolf). Be careful what you say - keen observers will jump you if you say anything even remotely suspicious. (Even editing a post can result in suspicion.)

Dusk (aka Sundown)
The Host tallies the votes, and whomever has the most votes against them is lynched. That player is out of the game. It is possible, under special circumstances, to get a lynching cancelled - see the "Roles" section for more on that.

Roles

(Were)Wolf
You kill humans; it's in your nature. At night, you gather with the other wolves and kill one person each night. (In some larger games, the Pack Leader role may be used; the Pack Leader can choose to "sniff" a Human each night to see if that Human holds an Auxiliary Role. In really big games, he might even be told what it is.)

Civilian
You're an ordinary human who does not hold an Auxiliary Role. Nothing you can do other than cast your lynch vote, really.

Anything other than "Civilian" is considered an Auxiliary ("Aux") Role, and is special and unique. The good thing is, having an Aux Role gives you an advantage. The bad thing is, sure, you could try to help the other Humans by telling them who you are (remember, you can't show them your Role ID), but they might not believe you, and the wolves might catch on and try to kill you.

Seer
You can sense danger. Each night, you must PM the Host and tell them whether you wish to exercise your ability (which is to know how many Wolves there are left). If so, in some large games, the Wolves may be informed it's happened (or even who you are).

Psychic
You can see hidden talents in others (and the truth in Wolves). Each night, you must PM the Host and tell them whether you wish to exercise your ability (you'll be informed of that player's exact role). The Wolves might get informed if you do this, so look out!

Coroner
You specialize in dead people. Via PM, each Dawn, you're told the exact role of the person the Wolves killed, and each Sundown, you're told the exact role of the player who got lynched. You can use the process of elimination to determine who's left.

Insomniac
You have trouble sleeping at night (who wouldn't with all this killing going on?). Each night, you must PM the Host and tell them whether you were able to sleep. If not, you will be informed of the NAME of one of the wolves!! The problem is, that very Wolf will also be told who YOU are, so be careful!!

Unknown Celebrity
You're popular where you came from, but the other players don't know this. If you're killed by the Wolves, the players will find out in the newspaper the next day, and that day's lynching will be CANCELLED. This provides a valuable opportunity for the other players to say whatever they want without fear of getting lynched for it (in fact, some hosts will extend the Sundown deadline to give the players more time to discuss things when this happens).

Vigilante
You were smart - you packed a GUN. Trouble is, you only have one bullet. Once you're sure you know who you want dead, during any Day phase, you can announce your role publicly, and shoot anyone you want (this MUST BE CONFIRMED BY THE HOST). That player is dead IMMEDIATELY (some Hosts might cancel the day's lynching for this, because someone's already been killed). You may no longer have your gun, but at least now the other players know for sure you're human!! Note: In some games, if the Vigilante is killed before he can use his weapon, another human might find it, and the role of Vigilante is added to any other Aux Role that player might have. ALSO: Nobody can pretend to be the Vigilante. Why? If you try to declare a shot, and you're not the Vigilante, it backfires because a shot MUST be confirmed by the host.

Ninja
You are a free agent ninja. At night, you must PM the Host to tell them if you're doing any stealthy assassinating tonight. If you end up killing a Wolf, the Wolves run scared for the night (and the dead body's Wolf form is plainly visible to everyone in the morning). If you kill a human, the Wolves still get their kill (and the humans will wake up with TWO deaths the next morning). This can work great against Wolves, but, as you can do it multiple times, if you don't know what the heck you're doing, you can end up wiping out the humans FOR them. Ninjas may be cool, but don't overdo it. Be careful!! (Also, if other Aux Roles that perform actions at night, such as the Insomniac or Guardian Angel, happen to be up and about the same night you are, you'll be told what you saw on the way to your target.)

Guardian Angel
You have the heavenly ability to guard the lives of those around you. Each night, you must PM the Host telling them who, if anyone, you're protecting tonight. You can't protect the same person more than one night in a row (unless the Wolves choose that person to kill - in which case, nobody dies that night, and you can protect the same player again the next night). Sure, you can protect yourself, but why be greedy? Also, some games force you to blow your cover when a protection is successful. Be cautious.

Priest
Just as the Vigilante can bring death, you can bring life. Once, anytime Day or Night, publicly or privately, you can bring back to life any player who was previously dead. You can DEVESTATE the Wolf team if you bring back a well-informed Aux Role late in the game (such as the Coroner, the Psychic, or the Insomniac), but you could just as easily get the human team killed by unintentionally bringing back a Wolf. Be careful with this role.

I will take a moment to explain a bit better on that front.

During the day, all players, human and wolf alike, talk publicly in the thread and cast a vote on who they think is a wolf (of course, the wolves should act as non-suspiciously as possible, and should do their best to make other players think they're a fellow human). At sundown, the votes are tallied and whomever has the most votes against them is killed under the consensus that that player is a wolf. This is the humans' main way of attempting to win by eliminating wolves from the game.

The game ends as noted by the Host either when all the Humans are dead and only wolves remain (a wolf victory), or when the humans wake up and don't find a dead body (a human victory). (In the case of the Guardian Angel or others who can protect people from dying, the Host will find a way to demonstrate that wolves are still present if an aux role successfully protects someone from death.)

Timezones can be a confusing issue, I am a aware. This is why I provide my timezone when giving deadlines, and I almost always give at least two entire real days before a deadline.

According to my computer, it is nearly 1:00 PM in the eastern US (EST, or Eastern Standard Time). 10 PM on the 13th is 4 days and 9 hours from the time of this post.

Okay, YoshiKart, Vytalibus, and Larto are now signed up.

Reversed the order of the first two posts and prettied up the status post a bit. This way, players can simply click the topic title and look at that very first post to see the game's current status (and thus see who's alive/dead/whatever).

You will also note I have the current phase in the thread's title; this way, you can tell just by visiting the Random subforum and seeing this game's entry on the list whether the game phase has changed.

You ARE still accepting participants, right?

Count me in too!

I think it'd be nice if you post the number of hours until the end of each period starting from the time of that post. That would make timezones less confusing.

That way, we don't need to do any calculations; as long as we have the right time zone set in our settings, we'll know exactly when each period ends.

Theres 11 people now, did Ace ditch this thread already?

AceOfArrows
Eh, I didn't ditch it, I just got tired of checking it every day, then ended up forgetting about it.

If there're a couple more participant signups (which, at this rate, I assume will take some time into May), we will (finally) get started.

Edit: Okay, I've added all new signups to the list. (I just hope the first 4 people who signed up haven't forgotten and still want to play.)

We now have a total of 14 players signed up.

The signup goal is met, but since I don't feel like doing everything necessary to start the game right this moment, last-moment signups will be accepted for the next 24 hours.

Tentatively: Signups will be CLOSED at 10:30 EST, approximately 24 hours (1 full day) after the time of this post. ROLE ID PMS WILL GO OUT AT THAT TIME.
Atmey
So we need to post here if we are active?
Jinxy
So how long is 1 segement of a day? if its like 5 hrs i think some ppl may miss a segment and even get a phantom vote. (Im not kidding.)
LadySuburu
The talking/voting section of a day is usually at least several IRL days, up to a few weeks. :3
Topic Starter
AceOfArrows
LadySuburu is correct. (A mere 5 hours would be FAR too short a time.)

Also: Signups are now CLOSED. We will be using the 14 people currently signed up.

It is now the Role Confirmation Phase.

All participants will be receiving a Private Message (PM) containing their Role Identification ("Role ID") within the next 3 or 4 hours. You are to PM me back to confirm that you have received your Role. This also confirms you're still interested.

Once all fourteen participants have PM'ed me back, the game shall commence.

All forms of communication are considered fair play (although Werewolf Game discussion is usually kept mostly in the thread). You may say whatever you want during any Day phase, anywhere you want.

This includes
1) Here in this thread
2) IM clients such as AIM or MSN
3) IRC, be it the original client or Osu's in-game chat
4) E-mail
5) Private messages

Just make sure of two things:
1) You don't talk here during Night phases. (Yes, you can still PM each other and stuff at Night if you want.)
2) You cast your lynch vote HERE. That's one of the two absolutes (the other is that you can't show anyone your Role ID); lynch votes MUST be public so they can be referenced at any time, so even if it would otherwise be convenient, I will NOT accept lynch votes made in chat, e-mail, or PM; the only way your vote will count is when it is cast here in this thread.

You may, of course, discuss with each other who you're planning to vote for (that's not against the rules, and can add to the fun), and if you want, strike deals or make agreements/pacts/whatever where part of the deal is that one or both of you will vote for someone particular.

As long as your final vote decision is here in this thread for all to see, I'll be happy.

Also, some notes on Aux Roles and the whole "you can't show people your Role ID" thing...no, you can't show them your Role ID, but that's it; you can still claim to hold any role you want, and you can even provide information (be it true or false) about what your claim you know because of your role. (This assures Aux Role humans can still try to help, but it's the decision of the other players on whether or not to believe what they're being told.)

And a note to the Wolves (you know who you are); I'd suggest picking a spokesperson who will be responsible for PMing me the name of the person to be killed so you don't all end up sending me a PM every night. Also: you don't have to converse in PM; you can use any form of communication you want, as IM clients make it easy to hold conversations between multiple people at a time, which can allow the discussion to go faster and allow you to arrive at a conclusion faster. Just make sure the Humans don't know where you're talking at.

Remember that I am the Host; if you have any questions, feel free to ask anywhere, anytime (although if it concerns your particular role, it would be best to PM me). If you're an Aux Role and have lost a PM containing information you needed, let me know and I'll re-send it. Role-specific info will always be distributed via forum PM; I will never send reminders using IRC PMs (although if you PM me in-game asking for a reminder, I'll send it, then tell you in-game that I sent it).

Werewolf Game #1: The Werewolf Game

Dawn

It begins.
The game's participants are flown to a distant town via private jet; the town has all necessary amenities, including a fully-stocked store with no clerk so the participants have access to all the food they will need.

The participants have all been informed that they will each have their own small house to live in, complete with water and sewer service, all paid for; they have each been given directions to their house from where the plane lands.

They have also been given, as a group, an instructional DVD, which they have been told to go view as a group at the center of town in the town square, which apparently has a large pavilion with a plasma TV.

The group of fourteen walks to the pavilion, and the DVD is put in the player.

On the screen is Ace Of Hearts, whom they recognize as their Host. Ace speaks to the participants as follows:

"Hello my contestants.

You fourteen were selected for this violent experimental game, which, by the way, will be televised outside this region for others to watch.

As you already know, you each have a house to live in, complete with all things necessary for daily life. In fact, we've even provided each of your houses with a computer with internet service, as well as a flat-screen plasma TV with cable, as well as a PlayStation 3, XBox 360, and Wii, with a large stock of games at the game rental store, all of which have been paid for by the company.

The reason why all of these amenities has been provided for you is because of the nature of the game you are about to participate in, and the reason why all fourteen of you signed a waiver, which only made vague statements that your lives could be at risk.

And they are.

While you were sleeping in your hotel rooms last night, five of you were injected with a DNA-altering substance; one which turns you into a violent wolf every night.

That's right: five of you...are werewolves.

As a live audience watches your daily lives here in this isolated town, the purpose and entertainment of this game is to see whether the wolves will kill off all the ordinary humans, or whether the ordinary among you will be able to pick out the werewolves and systematically kill them before it is too late.

To do this, each one of you still living must cast a lynch vote every day. At sundown, he or she who has the most votes against them will be publicly executed in a lynching: they will be hanged at the gallows located in the back of the town. Any who refuse, are too scared, or forget to vote by sundown for any reason shall receive a phantom vote which counts against them the next day.

If the humans win, all participants still alive at the conclusion of this game will, as a reward, be taking home their new computer, plasma TV, game consoles, their choice of games from the rental store, and one million dollars each.

If the wolves win...well, that's just too bad. I guess we'll then just have to bomb the place afterward for the ratings.

You are free to do anything you like in this town; there are no rules or laws here, fitting for a scenario where most of you will not be living much longer anyway.

Welcome, my participants, to The Werewolf Game.

Good luck."

The DVD stops at this point.

Day 1

During This Phase: Free discussion and lynch voting.

Deadline: Sundown will be 3:00 PM EST on May 4, which is approximately 3 days from the time of this post. He or she who has the most votes against them at this time shall be lynched.
Wojjan

A couple tips to get the ball rolling on lynch voting, as first-day voting is often rather awkward. Most of these tips can now also be found in the Status post.

1) You can use any justification you like for your vote (even ridiculous/little/stupid stuff), including no reason at all, or just selecting someone randomly.

2) You can change your vote if you like (although you'll probably confuse me and make the other players suspicious).

3) As it can be used as a tactic, you have the right to refuse to vote with the understanding that you will get a Phantom Vote that will count against you the next day. (Abstaining from voting is often part of an agreement with other players, not wanting to draw suspicion, preventing yourself from angering other players, or can also result from a lack of knowing who to vote for.)

4) As it can be used as a tactic, if you're bold and think you've got good reasons, you can cast your lynch vote against yourself if you want; this is a bold move, but in so doing, you assure you won't get a Phantom Vote the next day by voting against yourself now.

Pasonia
All posts made in this game by me, I'll try to render it in 3rd-person mode.

Day 1

Pasonia looked around lazily, playing Dynasty Warriors 6. Most of the people in this game are people he don't actually know; it's tiring, boring and outright sick to have to die in a televised environment while people watch their mind games from afar.

"Hanging by the gallows?" He snorted when the DVD played. "Don't you guys think it's all a bit too ridiculous? GALLOWS? I'd have expected a firing squad if we can have all the advanced amenities!" He then notices a security camera hanging by the back of the room, to which he promptly shows his middle finger and says, "Hey, nutheads! Give us a firing squad or *I* will hang you by the damn noose."

===

"Eenie Meenie Miney Mo... Who's the spider on the wall..." Pasonia yawned, dozing off in the bed in utter boredom; without Internet he feels extremely restless. "I should leave a will saying that if I die, I'll want to be buried while sleeping on top of this bed. How'd they make big, fluffy beds like this, really..."

Then he remembered about the voting. Looking around from the second floor window, no one is venturing outside for the moment.

"I can't think of anyone, anything at this moment. So I'll leave it to the spider on the wall..."

He wrote all the names, including his own, on a piece of paper. Then, carefully locating the spider, he had the piece of paper placed directly beneath the spider, and then spoke in a deep voice:
"The spider is you..."

The spider fell from its web ignobly, landing right atop the words Sir Minelli.

===

"I couldn't think of a reason I want you dead, boy." Pasonia mouthed to himself in defence. "Whatever it is, you're going into the tally."

Pasonia hence submitted a vote for Sir Minelli, and quietly slipped out of the voting area before anyone else questions him on his decision.

Ace's figure was clearly shown on the TV, and Ace told Pasonia:

"I saw your little rant during the intro DVD viewing.

The other execs wouldn't let me have a firing squad; I tried, but they told me no, because that would put other people in there, and they apparently don't want me to put more people in danger than necessary."

Ace looks around, and after reassuring himself that the surroundings are clear, continued, in a rather annoyed manner:

"Stupid execs.

Oh, but strangely enough, they will let me send anything automated, such as a Suicide Booth."
He pauses for the moment, then shrugs at the prospect.
"If enough people want some other manner of death, we can send it. Until then..."
Ace slowly shakes his head, "...a hanging'll have to do."

With that, the television screen went into static.

Wojjan sat there. Thinking.

"All those weird and random accusations. Anyone of those could just be a werewolf trying to kill. Let's list the facts...
- Larto jumped the gun with attacking vyt on one line, but on the other hand, he had some of a point.
- I don't think kuwarudo is taking this too serious. After all, he might be dead tomorrow
- My DSi's battery is full. I'll cast my vote now, until further discussion lights a new thing to me.
Sorry Larto, but thinking quick when death's involved doesn't quite seem... human."

Wojjan submitted his vote, and went on with Code. Level 123456 was waiting.

I laughed so hard that I cried.

-Remembers of voting-

-Writes a name on a piece of paper-

-Throws it to the cam-

-The paper says: Vytalibus-

-Goes play the psp-

-Realises there is NO psp-

"ACE, PSP PL0X."

Dear mom,

I'm writing this letter in fear of getting -killed by the same game show that I had once loved and adored. Just the first day, and everyone's staring at me and my Kirby-themed underpants. I sure wish I packed that Klonoa one instead.

Well anyway, I've heard words about five werewolves being around the fourteen contestants. I really don't know how to respond to that, but ever since knowing that fact, I've actually been looking forward to getting -killed before night comes. I don't think werewolves would want my hot, tight hat to begin with, and I'd rather be -killed by the humans rather than be a very delicious-looking swine for the werewolves.

With my last love,
Vyt

P.S. I sure wish an angel would come and take me right now. I really need some caring.

Thats it. You're going to hell fpr making no sense.

Edit: No. Think with logic.

-Humans cant talk to spiders for the love of god.
-But maybe werewolfs can.
-...But would ace give someone with authority that much power?
-And does authority = talking with animals?

Logic confirmed. Vote unchanged.

But im on to you, P. (And i know this isint fully invisible.)
