Holy crap, guys. Just found out they're making a Final Fantasy X HD remake. If they put trophies in there, too, then fuck yes. I'll finally be able to play an awesome Final Fantasy game again.
Rantai
Wow that might compel me to actually finish FFX...
Ivalset
The worst final fantasy game, you mean.

What a pile of shit.

If that one's not good, then I can think of 9 others that aren't either. I'd be more happy if they made a FFXII HD remake, but I know I'm one of the only people who liked that game. I've only ever played X, XII, and XIII though, so as far as I'm concerned, X is pretty good. I know Rolled would be super thrilled about FFX HD.

Neat!

Now there just needs to be a reason to have them and we're set

This is pretty much my main reason.

Also, 6, 9 and 10 are the only really good FFs I've come across.

I'd totally prefer a FFXII HD remake. And 9 was the best.

Dude, I already know FFX has some of the worst cutscenes and voice acting in the world. Tidus, Yuna, Rikku, and Wakka can all die. Auron and Lulu make up for all of it though. And the whole Jecht/Sin thing is pretty trippy. FFXIII had Lightning, Snow, Hope, and Vanille though. And Fang didn't even make up for that load of shit. The one thing I like about FFX is the Sphere Grid stuff. Anyone can get any skill they want, but it'd take an eternity to get them all. Also, and this is just me, but I liked Blitzball. And I liked the fact that there were clear-cut ultimate weapons. Not this "Oh, there's 6 or 7 or whatever ultimate weapons" bullshit.
Ivalset
Lightning owns, fuck you buddy.

Ivalset wrote:

Oh, Ival.
awp
Wakka is awesome what is wrong with you? Lulu has about as much personality as a bucket of paint.

I'll admit that I consider FFX as one of the better games (Ival has it right with IX being the best, of course) because the world in which FFX takes place is fully developed and characterized. In some of the best FF games to date - take 6 as an example - the world was pretty much just a big mass of land. It served to do nothing more than pose as a stage for other events to unfold. You have the war of the magi, and you have people living in towns scattered around the world map, very few of which have any sort of detail to them (ZOZO being the only one I can really think of) and that's about it. The world in FFX had cultures, religions, racism, history, pastimes - there was just so much more to it. Tidus was obnoxious and Yuna was bland as hell but the world itself felt believable and immersing.

Though I don't know why FFX is getting the remake treatment. It's really unnecessary. The step from PS2-era gaming to half-ass current era gaming doesn't offer a whole lot. Even if they whole-ass it, and bring the visuals to FF-XIII's level (rather than the GoW remakes, the Beyond Good and Evil remake, or the Ico/SotC remakes, which actually look terrible by this era's standards) it's still not going to add anything to the experience. At least, with older titles (anything before FF X, actually), the worlds and characters can be expanded on. PSX-era technology couldn't afford to do things like facial expressions (except for Conker's BFD, of course) and the locales were far more restricted and scaled back to fit the medium. By the PS2 we'd basically hit our stride, so we don't stand to gain anything by remaking FFX, except un-nightmare'ing the laugh scene. Oh, and making the lightning and water effects prettier.

Compared to the others, Lulu is a welcome change. Her personality is whatever, but she's got hilarious breasts and she's just my favorite person to use in combat. I really did like that game for its elemental-based combat. But yeah, if a Final Fantasy character can manage to not be annoying, then that's really good. I'm just excited about FFX because I never got around to doing everything in that game. I beat the game, got all the best weapons, and got all the summons, but I never caught all the monsters or fought Omega Mark X. There's some other stuff I probably missed, too. I wouldn't mind starting from scratch, finally completing it, and also getting trophies and shit for it.

Oh, and I don't like Wakka because he reminds me of this one dude I used to know that I fucking hate. Also, "IT'S AN AMBOOSH!"
awp
And another thing

where does final fantasy get the gall to have a "break damage limit" ability anyway?

1 - damage limits are for pussies
2 - Break damage limit doesn't break damage limits, it just adds a digit

MAN UPPPPPPPPPPPPP
Ivalset
Wakka is fuckin' awful. Who the fuck fights with some pussy ass ball? Wakka does.

Ugh, this FFX discussion just reminds me that I still haven't managed to beat FFX-2.
ampzz
Final Fantasy game breakers:

VIII - Selphie's The End in her Slot limit break.
XIII - Vanille's Death spell.

Only ones that really jump out to me off the top of my head... as some that are just stupidly OP'd in the entire franchise since they can/do work on everything in the game.

In regards to Wakka, I sort of wished he had of been like Tifa and Zell from FFVII/I and used his fists.
Would've made him a lot more useful and worth leveling.

The main character actually becomes a character around that point and not just a bad sardine joke so I guess there's that.

Wakka is the most useful character iirc - I can't recall the use of Rikku's limit break but Wakka's does 1.2 million damage when maxed, which is much better than anyone else's that I can recall

Aaaaaaaaaaand apparently non-HP/SP stats are not capped at 20 million any more in Disgaea 4. Oh, joy~

Lulu's still the most useful for me. She can ruin pretty much any enemy that isn't magic resistant. Doesn't matter if they're fast or flying or whatever, she's got it. Wakka is pretty weak most of the time, but he's good for flying crap. Auron can't hit birds to save his life. And Rikku's Limit Break fucking sucked and it required you to use items. Like maybe there was a combination of items that was good, but then you'd need a load of those items to keep using it, so that makes it useless.

These Final Fantasy discussions have the ability to confuse me, because when I first saw ampzz mention Selphie, I thought it was referring to me for a second.

Rikku's overdrive is absolutely necessary if you're doing a no-grid run, but I don't know if it has any instant-kill or something like 100,000 needles, or anything like that.

Ok, well in a normal game for people who aren't insane, she's useless. And she does have this move that sounds pretty good that takes the health of every enemy down to 1/16th of their original health, but I bet it doesn't work on a lot of things. She's got some pretty good buff/healing mixes though. Stuff you can't even get from normal items.

all I do with other overdrives is give them to Wakka and let him lay waste to everything

Playing it again as a Magician.

So is the main reason people hate FF13 because of its' extreme linearity? Going down straight paths with the occasional item or enemy is getting repetitive, but I like just about everything else about it so far (barring Vanille).
Pokebis
People hate it because they think improvements are bad. All the game did was get rid of the illusion FF was a linear series. It made things simpler and cut a lot of bullshit.

The part I didn't like was the fights get tediously long later in the game.

FF13 had a terrible story and character backstories/histories/motivations that only seemed half-genuine. It's just, not very well-written, so it's hard to get absorbed into what's going on. The pacing and the rate in which they introduced new elements was good for the first 10 hours or so, but the 10-30 hour mark it dragged far too much, and after that it was kind of alright to the end.

Played Shadows of the Colossus in 3D the other day. As far as HD remakes go, this one's just as lazy - if not lazier - than other HD remakes, with negligible graphical improvements, framerate dips, and 3d-rendering errors in some areas. Still kind of cool, but shit, what a lazy remake.

I'm not totally sure what you mean, so I'll answer a couple interpretations of that question. You don't rip off as many vent covers in this game in general. I also didn't do that many grate takedowns partly because it's not silent and mostly because there are sooo many ways to take people down now. I tend to knock people around with the shock gun if they're wearing armor. I know that there's such a thing as a Vent Takedown now where you just bust out through a vent cover though.

Odin Sphere is just incredible. The atmosphere and shit is just unreal, as gay as that sounds.

The real problem with the game is you'll probably get burned out once you hit the 3rd character's storyline, because you end up fighting most of the same bosses and visiting most of the same areas, though in different orders. I'm telling you this ahead of time so it's not a surprise, and so that you power through it, because the 4th and 5th characters are fucking awesome to play as and the ending of the game is incredible as well. Take a break if you need to if the repetition hits, but just make sure you end up finishing it at some point.

Honestly it's not even that bad of a repetition, because each character plays quite differently.
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
I'm gonna have to take a break once Zelda comes out anyway. I just hope I can figure this game out quick enough so I can actually make it to the 4th/5th characters. In the first and second chapter, I thought I was doing pretty good, but then once I got to that ice mountain shit, I was getting raped a lot and had to use a lot of healing items.

Odin's Sphere is hard as heck! Can't even get past Velvet with Gwendolyn on Normal.
Doesn't look like just hacking and slashing works either...
I stopped playing that game afterwards, too many game overs. D:

Crescent Pale Mist is pretty bad too imo. Or maybe I'm just that bad.
Either way it's still pretty bad. $6 bad.

Wishing my PS3 will get to my house sooner so I can start playing again. >_>
Finally some Arcana Heart 3 with decent internet!
Ivalset
protips with gwendolyn: dive stab all day.

Also, we should arcana heart 3 sometime mafiamaster, so you can body me in yet another fighting game.
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
Well, I try to use Dive Stab for bosses, but I'm usually bad at aiming, even if the boss is the size of a house. She has so much horizontal thrust. It doesn't do enough damage for my liking anyway. This game wouldn't be so hard if I wasn't always fucking around with plants and seeds. When I actually use Psypher attacks and absorb the phozons instead of using them to grow plants, it's easier.

By the way, the graphics in this game are just so fucking awesome. I keep staring at the animations and stuff cause they're so well-done. It's so smooth and great. It's not even in HD and it still looks better than a lot of current-gen HD stuff.

Anyway, almost done with Gwen.

Good grief, Mercedes is really cheap. I hope she continues to be this easy to use. Although I really hate how long it takes her to open her inventory/eat food/pick up items. Cornelius was so fast with all of that. Also, I had such a hard time figuring out what the hell was up with her chest area. I didn't notice that she was wearing a shirt since it's so similar to her skin color. Anyway, can't fucking wait for Oswald.
Bestelle
Her low as shit HP was her main downside, honestly. Only reason why I struggled on Titania so much because 1 hit = half HP gone from some of the monsters.
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
You know, Link, I didn't notice that about Mercedes until you mentioned it, but yeah, it's really low. Although it feels like enemies don't hit as hard anyway. And you don't get hit that often with her anyway.

But anyway, I finished her up and finally got to Oswald. He is hard to get used to. Like that is a severe jump to go from Mercedes to Oswald. He's the first character that doesn't have a decent defensive/evasive move. The first two can block and Mercedes can fly away and keep a distance. I'm guessing he'll have loads of HP though. I thought his shadow form would last a little bit longer than this though. But I dunno. With every single character, I go through the same cycle of thinking they're super bad at first, then getting used to their moves and getting really good with them. I can't wait to try Painkiller + Unlimited POW with shadow form.

Would you recommend it? Might get the PC version with my brother so we can play the campaign in co-op.

Saints Row 3 is a dumb-as-paste fun game. It's an excellent complement to GTA's realistic feel. imo Saints Row 2 was better than GTA 4 (as in, more fun to play) and Saints Row 3 is, whle very similar, more fun than Saints Row 2. I paid 65 bucks for it (which is quite a rarity) and don't regret it.
ampzz
Wall of text incoming.

The thing with GTA and Saints Row is this:
  1. Create one of the first sandbox styled action games in the community.
  2. Created a game that was senselessly good fun to do stuff you would not attempt to do out of game
  3. Continue to release award winning and highly profitable titles one after the other: GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas.
  4. San Andreas introduced immense character customisation, vehicular modifications and variable body modelling (Carlos could get fat or extremely thin) for the genre.
  5. Saints Row comes along as one of the (then) "next-gen" sandbox titles which is also highly enjoyable which is what made GTA such a good franchise.
  6. GTA IV more or less just slaps all of its fanbase in the face by removing all the enjoyable elements (random sandbox fun, customisation, etc.) and replacing it with a focus on realism which lost about half the enjoyment of the title.
  7. Saints Row Two reinforced the mantra of what sold its original title by increasing customisation level on characters, vehicles and incredibly fun weapons.
  8. Saints Row The Third comes out and continues on with providing its customer base with a highly enjoyable title yet again.
Any discrepancies in anything I did list just then are likely since this was roughly off the top of my head.

Moving on...
Going to pick up Dynasty Warriors 7, Saints Row 3 and Disgaea 4 (since my order got buggered up when I went for the pre-order route) as soon as possible.

Added bonus was finally booting up GT5 after so long and noticing all the fantastic downloadable content available for it like the Red Bull X2011 Prototype '11, man is that fun literally warping around the track with a stock top speed of 492km/h.

I guess? Saints Row games are closest to Vice City, I think. That's when the 3D GTAs were the wackiest. The best minigame in Saints Row is definitely insurance fraud. That shit's so fuckin' fun. Dive in front of vehicles and ragdoll through the city to rack up the insurance claims.

But yeah, okay, after you complete something like, the fourth mission in the game, you become free to sky-dive off the top of a skyscraper and parachute onto an unsuspecting dood in a hotdog suit. If you liked any of the GTA games, you'll probably love Saints Row. It has more character customization than the Fallout games (specifically speaking, aesthetics)

Saints Row 3 has made high-speed vehicle jacking a treat. No more strolling up to the car door once the driver stops. Shit, you don't even need to use the car door to get into the vehicle. That's what boots and windshields are for

Man, I liked Just Cause 2 where you could just zip line onto a car to jack it. Unfortunately, you almost never want to because driving in that game was horrible. Is the driving decent in Saints Row? Cause that was one of the only reasons I liked GTA IV. Some people complained about the driving in that game, but I thought it was good (the driving, not the game).

awp
Saints Row 2 costs like 10-15 dollars, so it's a good way to whet your appetite if you're on the fence and don't want to fork over 50 bucks.

The driving mechanics in Saints Row is...simplified. In GTA4 cars didn't have godly traction and powersliding and control and all that, but they do in the Saints Row games. The car mechanics feel a lot more like the PS2 GTAs, in that you can basically just hold down the gas all the time, and powerslide recklessly around corners and all that. Helicopters are also really easy to fly.
ampzz
Not to mention it is ridiculously fun to just jump out of the helicopter or aeroplane as you reach top speed in it after sending it hurtling towards the unsuspecting people below. :D
