I haven't played Soul Nomad, but I have an image of it somewhere, I believe. The only NIS game I've played that I didn't think was good was the one where Zetta was the main character - Makai Kingdom, I believe it was called. That game was kind of bland imo.
Soul Nomad looked interesting, even though Laharl was almost completely absent from it. He was like 2 lines of dialog.

NIS games have amazing voice actors/voice acting, but when anime are dubbed, they usually don't bother editing the video itself so the non-native VAs need to speak to the animation rather than having the animation animate to the VA, so the voice acting is a bit choppy and feels unnatural

I've never been a fan of dubbed anime/games with the original source being from Japan so my opinion is a little biased since I highly disliked the majority of the voice acting, it just felt too...forced? I think is the word I was after.
They didn't seem to fit the roles how I tried envisioning them to.

What's all this? Disgaea: Hour of darkness didn't have japanese voice option. So I had to listen the few first convos in english. My ears started to bleed almost immediately and I lost a fair amount of hair. Then I gained control and went to options to disable the voice. Played the whole game like that. But this is just me I guess.

It's very difficult (For me) to go back and play 1 after playing 2, and 2 after playing 3. There are certain features that make gameplay much quicker in each sequel. If you want to try the whole series, start with 1.Zerostarry wrote:

Oh, and I know it's not a "loss" technically, but then I'll start over from scratch again in the future and use up another 200+ hours. (I did that twice in D3)

I am happy to see they've apparently chosen to expand on the pirating stuff. Though Disgaea 3 allowed you to pirate pirate pirating pirate pirates so I don't know where you go from there.

Fuka's Second unlockable Evility: "Prinny Annihilation" - Increases Fuka's stats by 20% for every prinny defeated on the map.
Combined with these strategies I already use:
Use level 1's as sacrifices normally.

The Evility works on all prinnies killed in any way on map. Including allies.

I've finally found a main character I'm going to level up past 100 for non-ending purposes. That evility is just amazing.
that's pretty significant, especially for Prinny Sports levels
Custom Level creation is a bit limited even though I enjoy it. Hopefully they'll patch it back up to JP standards in the future. I've also only tried the base allowances they give you without any online play. (Planning to do online stuff only after I've beaten the game.)
Prinny explosions don't seem to qualify for the evility. Only when one is killed by either an ally or an enemy. I guess "Defeated" is more specific than I thought. (Still an amazing evility.)

That's a bit of a shame, I quite like tossing prinnies around just for the heck of it, especially after you've got a mildly leveled prinny as well into a nice cluster of enemies.
Ah well, Fuka's turning out to be an awesome character I'll be looking forward to using as a main-party character.

The only thing I'm sad about is her low SPD stat. It means that if I want her dual-weilding mega-nekomatas, I'll have to do a lot of aptitude grinding.ampzz wrote:

They just named it forever counter because most units will die by the end of that exchange.

The reviewer basically said, this is an SRPG, with an SRPG camera, and with a lot of depth to its SRPG elements so if you dont like SRPG's you wont like this game.
1-10 rating scales are stupid because the only things that qualify as 9-10 are 5 hour long ultra hyper streamlined games because they supposedly cater to everyone.
A large portion of great games this gen are mostly 8's and low 9's.

I don't understand why they attacked the difficulty and threw out the word complex all the time. I always thought Disgaea was one of the easiest, simpler SRPGs I've played.

Some people don't know how easy it is to grind in this game, really I want to be an asshole to the reviewer but seriously what is the average gamer let alone SRPG player gonna think about disgaea if he doesn't know all the ass random mechanics and just how stupid damage gets in the game. He's gonna try to play it normally and tactically and suddenly a boss 20 levels up appears and beats his ass.
I never had this problem and I always did my first runs guideless. I always felt like the game held my hand, but maybe that's different elements than what other people perceive.
Item World can be a bit vicious early-on, but overall the game is quite easy (until the Land of Carnage in Disgaea 3, anyway). Oh, some of the Dark World puzzles in D2 were really tough, too. Just a massive time-sink of pure joy.
I never use a guide when playing Disgaea games. I sometimes look at the Steal formula, but that's about it. I don't know whether to call it overwhelming or unnecessary, but I've never seen any value in it. I don't want maximized stats because they cap at 20 million, and I can figure out on my own how to break the 11th digit when doing damage.

I'm nearing the end of the main storyline, so I'm about halfway to a third through the game now.

It was emizel, not fuka. And as i said, i fucked up in a way that resulted in me losing all my useful people in like turn 2. Then i didn't realize that was a save screen instead of a load screen.

Just got to Laharl. I took down two of his minions but once he dual-wielded two Magichange Dragons his stats broke 6 digits and I was like yeah I'm not gonna win
my party averages about 1/5 of his minions levels so it was a bit much

Also apparently stat caps on weapons are fairly low(compared to what it would be if they werent capped) so fist weapons are the best weapons in the game because of the speed.(basically swords have a lot of spillover stats that get capped and arent used, while fists can hit the attack cap while having the speed)

The soundtrack is great. If shipping wasn't like, 15 dollars, I would have pre-ordered it for that. Well, assuming I was clairvoyant and knew the soundtrack was that good. Since the premium edition also comes with the soundtrack, I'm tempted to recommend it. The figurine that comes with the premium is Fuka, right? She's probably my least favourite - next to that Thief Angel, perhaps - but eh, ymmv

While I do like the Disgaea series, I still haven't even beat the first one on PSP. Mainly because I've been too busy with other stuff to bother. And yet I still have to deal with Dissidia duodecim Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy X-2, XII, XIII and VII. Oh well, I'll get to the Disgaea 4 eventually.
Personally I think you're putting a little too much emphasis on playing Final Fantasy.

I did the first post-postgame mission. It was very easy thanks to MoO 4 and a level 72 Fradarach (or whatever the highest-tier pre-pirating sword's called). Party was cranking out over a million damage a turn. Gonna have to Mana Grind to get to the next level though :(

Adell was pretty OP in Disgaea 3. He has a unique S-level attack which is fire elemental. I used that for the majority of the post-game until I got a sword that cranked Laharl's stats.lukewarmholiday wrote:

X-Dimension is a bitch in Disgaea 4. I've already hit 2 maps where my current party couldn't possibly win, due to certain tricks being necessary (Throw 7, Petanque Evil Aura). Not as straightforward as it was in Disgaea 3.
Make a slime for throw 7, or do you actually need THROW 7.
A slime is good enough. I have a slime tier 4 atm. With MoO4 unlocked you can level them pretty quickly. You don't actually need to level them, but you need to run down a ~30 tile path with obstacles so you'll also want to invest in some BarefootX or Accelerators.
