I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm getting an error when I open osu!.exe...

Have a look at this:

Any idea what's up? This just started a couple of minutes ago...

As a result of our IRC conversation, I am marking this one as resolved/unknown. It was most likely a random graphics driver/directx glitch which as far as I can see has no direct links to osu! itself.

If anyone else manages to replicate this error, please bump this thread.

I just installed osu!, threw VISTA.osz in the Songs directory, tried to run osu!.exe, and got the same error.

This error means generally that an application on your system has not closed your graphics device correctly. Check you don't have another 3d app open that is doing something strange, else try relogging or restarting your PC. This is not directly caused by osu! itself, as far as I can see.

Report back if you can't get it going after trying that.

I restarted my computer and tried again with my antivirus, NOD32, as the only other program running (in the tray). Still the same error.

Do you have an up-to-date copy of DirectX? Also - what kind of graphics card do you have installed? And what operating system, just for benefit of doubt :).

Edit: on googling for this error, a few things come up:

* Make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card
* Make sure the slider in Display Settings > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot is set to full
* Check the compatibility settings for osu! to make sure it isn't being limited to a certain number of colours (also make sure you are running in 24/32bit colour)

9.0c, because I don't have Vista.

SiS M760GX, it's built into my laptop.

Windows XP Professional Corporate with Service Pack 2.

Tried it, rebooted, nothing changed.

It already was.

It isn't.

disable any weird things from your graphics card control panel, as triple buffering, vertical syncing, and maybe antialias.
not a good enough advice but who knows haha

My graphics control panel doesn't even have any options in it  Damn SiS

It seems as though that card is only DX8.1 compliant... This could be the source of the error. I'm not sure what other advice I can offer about this - there seem to be others with the same problem by searching that card model and the error..

I wonder why they still sell crappy graphics cards like this (or is it just an old machine?) which run on sub-y2k technology..

Damn...

As for when I bought it, this laptop is about 2 years old.

I think I've found a fix.

Would you be able to contact me on irc (irc.enterthegame.com #osu) or msn so I can test it out?

Thanks
peppy
It seems that this issue is resolved for at least this specific model of graphics card.

If you are encountering this problem, please follow these steps (works b79+):

  1. If you don't have a file called osu!.cfg in your osu! directory, create a new text file with this name.
  2. Open this file in notepad and add the following line
    GraphicsFix = 1
Please report if this does or does not work for you - there may be more solutions I can offer :).
