Are you terribad at osu? Mousing skill not fast enough? Trouble with triplets? Etna Sliders? Annoying spacing? Well, we've got the solution for you. Known to the masses as the "BeForU pack 1", we present to you...James Training.

Surgeon General's Warning: Not recommended to newcomers/people below rank #200000 and Lucidity, honestly.

Surgeon General's Double Warning: Lucidity demands I put this here. This thread is a joke. And by a joke, I mean it works, but you should realize that there are a plethora of methods to improving one's skill, and this is not the only method. It does work, but apparently some people? think it's the only way. This thread was made a little over a year ago, and the game was released over two years ago, so obviously this can't be the only method of improvement.

What is James Training?
  • James Training is a set of rigorous maps designed to push your osu skills to the limit. By repeatedly practicing on this set of six maps, you'll improve yourself on techniques such as:
  1. Mouse control
  2. Deciphering annoying beat patterns
  3. Etna Sliders
  4. Triplets
  5. Quintuplets
  6. All kinds of -plets
  7. Huge jumps
  8. Anger Management
  9. And a lot of other skills I can't put to words!
James training will not improve your skills at:
  1. Spinning spinners
  2. Badly spaced spacing
  3. Overly repetitious repeating sliders
  4. Telepathy
  5. Internet
How do I get some James Training?
  • Download the Beatmap Pack #13 here (which contains the six James Training maps). Only the hard versions are part of James Training -- stick to the hard maps!
This is absolutely ridiculous. How do you expect me to pass these songs?!
  • The beginning is rough, that's for sure. Restarts every 10 seconds, and it looks futile. But keep at it; each failure is a stitch of progress. Soon you'll be passing that map, and you may think it's because you've memorized it -- this is okay. For maps this difficult, memorization won't help you alone. The skills you've developed will elevate your osu ability to new heights.
So I've passed all these songs on hard. Have I finished James Training?
  • Passing is only the first step; to consider yourself an adept of James Training, you'll need to fullcombo all of the maps. A nearly impossible feat, I know. The attempts in trying to FC these maps will better you as an osu! player, guaranteed, 110%.ps: your james training will never be over
Still not convinced? Already, people have begun to live the James training. These people have accepted James as their master, training under his enlightening presence:
  1. Saturos - ??? I don't know if he's accomplished anything. Saturos Edit: Large spacing became easier. FU Ival. <3
  2. Ivalset - Has cleared Twister (Subarausdaidoshaldkasjdioajshiki Mix) without committing suicide
  3. LadySuburu - Went from failing DejaVu (Hard) to passing Calling (Ultimate) in a day!
  4. Mogsworth - After a day of James Training, can (almost) pass We Are!
  5. Remdawg - Was rank #900, and after James Training, is now rank #400+!
  6. RavenlockA - Learned mouse control, and also gained a +4 bonus to his bluff skill check
I discovered James Training on accident. When a certain map with a few annoying spinners/sliders was ranked, I made a bet with a certain individual that he couldn't fc it. If he could, I would go FC all of the BeForU maps. To my surprise, he succeeded in like 5 tries, and I set out unknowingly on the James Training path. Now, weeks later, I can pass Agony, Calling, DejaVu, Twister (Subarashiashdisdksaldsshiki Mix), and a slew of other maps that I was too noob to pass.

Stop sucking at osu!, get some James Training today.

July 7th, 2009: James Training becomes 1 year old today. *sniffle* I...I told myself I wouldn't cry! *sniffle*
August 13th, 2012: Over the past 4 years, James has truly touched our lives in ways unimaginable. However, it's time to let nature run its course. The methods of 4 years ago are ancient and outdated compared to what is necessary today. Knowledge of the wheel is useless when everyone is riding on hoverboards, of course.

ps: lucidity hates james training and you should too because you're bad at it

IMHO, I perfer grinding myself from bottom to top difficulty, extremely long (And to the point boring), but works to you to the point, you'll S almost any song, you never even heard of, the first time you try it, be working for me on several cases.
LadySuburu
Ivalset can vouch for me when I say that in ONE DAY I went from failing DejaVu Hard, to beating Calling - Ultimate.

Ivalset may not actually be able to vouch for this. Results will vary. Insanity is likely. Other factors may have caused my sudden growth in skill.

Join James training now!

Honestly, holy crap. I've been playing offline all day so I don't raise my playcount, but man, I've actually nearly passed We Are after one day.

I was once just another #900 or worse ranked player. Then a friend recommended James Training for my woes.

Needless to say, I'm in the top #400 now in ranks! And I can no longer use my hands to their full extent!

THANKS JAMES TRAINING!!!

Frequently playing beatmaps like these when you are no way near the skill level of coping with it is just asking for trouble, since you will risk causing long term joint and tendon damage in the hands and wrist. Not only that, but you will also SLOW DOWN your progress at becoming good at Osu! by learning bad timing habits and poor hand control. Repetition can either work for you or against you, because in the end your brain doesn't care whether you do good or bad at something, it just learns whatever you do. If all you are doing is moving your hand around without decent control, and hitting the circles with poor timing, then that's exactly what your brain will learn. Then eventually with enough repetition you will start playing bad at even the slow speeds because you would have trained yourself how to suck at Osu!, rather than being good at it.

IMO, the best way to learn Osu! is to start at the level you can cope with and gradually build up to the faster beatmaps over a period of weeks, or months. I know this probably feels like a long time, since most people want to become good at things quickly (myself included), but I really do think the GRADUAL approach is far more effective in the long run. :)

I agree with Adamskii. I was outraged that this training pack includes only the highest difficulties. I was expecting a training program, not an insurmountable task. :(

You say that as if the maps are poorly made and random. They're not. You need to be able to control your movement and timing to pass these, hence why this is effective. Working on harder maps from the get go is easily the fastest way to get good at osu, assuming you have to patience to do so.
awp
I actually need to give this a try now. I'm at that level.

1) James Training is is not responsible for self-inflicted injuries as a result of James Training.
2) James Training does not teach memorization. It teaches mouse control.
3) The gradual approach is effective but inefficient. James Training is effective and efficient. Why spend months doing what you could do in a day?

Oh well, op fixed.

I have a question about James Training. I'm interested in enrolling, but I'm a TABLET ELITIST - will James Training still work to improve my osu! abilities or is it a mouse-specific exercise program?
James
my secretary, ivalset, can answer that.
Topic Starter
Ivalset
Well, we haven't had a tablet student yet, but in theory, it should work.
James
IIRC first beatmap i played was agony normal, after FCing it i switched to hard already.
after getting 2.5mil-ish i played insane already at rank 800.

never played any easy maps.
emj
omg i improved so much no joke
James
complimentary (optional) training program:

Ivalset's training

Purpose? more mouse control, and pro spinner moves (not as high score as tablet)

Requirements? just buy a logitech g5 (or a4tech x7 if you dont have the money to buy a g5, its 4x cheaper?)

how does it work?
set both sensitivity in windows to the middle/a knot to the left starting in the middle
set osu! sensitivity to 1
play red rocket rising

After a few tries (after i can reach 2-3 jumps in the last four notes)
i beat himawari and love shine (never beat that before)
fc chikara on first try
few mistakes on the other 2

i still need more practice on spinning tho
P.S. i can easily 300 the spinners on chizu hard now without pausing for the notes next to the spinners XD
RavenlockA
On a more productive level than my previous post:

I wasn't informed of James Training (TiZ referred me to playing here, and I've not even been here for three weeks, yet.) Before Suburu brought it up to me, I did the gradual approach. And like Ivalset mentioned, it is highly inefficient.

My play count was murdered prior to playing the maps anyway, but I've managed a huge leap in skill (even if I haven't perfected these songs yet), and I can fully admit to it being because I've gained a sense of control while playing through these particular maps. (Quote me and I'll do things the internet isn't ready for.)

I don't think at any point is somebody telling people "PLAY THESE OR ELSE YOU WILL FAIL FOREVER!" ... I think, at least. But for those that are interested in a challenge--at the same time learning how to control your hand-eye coordination; give these a real shot. Focus on them over the course of a few days. You'll see an improvement. And anything is better than nothing.
James
My progress on ivalset training
maps that i cant FC before and i can now:

oh i also got kharl's nankaiyattemo jumps in eroge 90% of the time now.

At least I wasn't quoted! :)

And omg Nharox, doesn't that just suck... Congrats, anyway!

Well there is no need for James training for one reason.

In any rhythm game I've ever played my sister and I have always followed one rule. if you want to beat a hard song, play a harder song.(this is for quick learning you could always keep throwing yourself at the same song and get better)

What James training does do is give you some harder songs :P

I'm quoting my previous post because I have to admit I was WRONG with what I said.

Since most people in this thread have been gaining MASSIVE improvements in their Osu! abilities since playing James Training, I thought I would give it a try myself. Not only have I been playing James Training on a daily basis, but I also have abandoned playing 3 & 4 star beatmaps, and now only play 5 star beatmaps at full speed. Within almost a week of doing this I have noticed a HUGE increase in all of my Osu! abilities. Just a few days ago I sucked at spinners, but now I'm getting scores 3x higher than before. I'm now getting around 64,000 on my 15 second spinner map with no MODs, and I was only getting 21,000 on the same spinner map before James training.

Also, my speed and accuracy have improved greatly on all maps I play. Around 30 minutes ago I got a full combo on Rainspark [Hard], and I would have got 7th place on the scoreboard if I had been logged in. And I'm now very close to getting a FC on both Healing Vision [Hard] and Shotgun Symphony [Hard]. I expect them both completed within the next few days with good accuracy.

I've attached a replay of my rainspark victory below, for anyone who may wish to watch it. :)

EDIT: I've managed to beat the 2nd place score on Rainspark [Hard] since I posted this message, although I was logged out again. The image below has been updated with my new score.

Just one more thing I would like to say. "Thank you James Training!"

Remco32
This will make your mouse control better, won't it?
Anyhow, can't find the courage to follow the trainingsprogram more then 15 in a row...
I think I'm gonna play every map daily, hoping to improve!
Mogsy
I guess I should thank James Training right now.

I've passed Rainspark on Insane without using my space bar (in fact, I did better with my mouse than the space bar. If I tried, I could FC).

I got an S/FC on Morning Glory.

I FC'd Allegro Cantabile on my first attempt today.

There are more success stories here, I just don't quite remember them yet.

But thanks a lot, James Training! :D
silasw
I just passed all the James Training maps. It feels good.

Baby steps, awp.

Complete http://osu.ppy.sh/?p=beatmap&s=1961 before even attempting the one awp linked, imo. Consider this as your BA, and SSII as your Master's.
