Some of you PS2-era gamers out there may remember a little-known rhythm game called Gitaroo Man. For those that don't, here's a bit of gameplay on the hardest difficulty:

It's actually one of (if not the) first games from iNiS, original creator of Ouendan! I've recently fallen in love with this game, frankly there really hasn't been anything like it released since that I've been able to find.

Gameplay is simple, broken into three main phases:
Offense has the player trace the line with their analog stick, and tap any button when a note approaches the center to play it. The note strings can get very complex, and really require knowledge of the song to get the higher ranks. Each note successfully played depletes the enemy's HP. As the song reaches it's end, this becomes Harmony or Finale phase. Basically one final note string to finish off the opponent.
Charge features the same gameplay as the Offense phase, only the notes hit replenish your HP instead of deplete the enemy's. Tends to take place between a new set of Offense and Defense phases.
Defense has each of the four main face buttons cascade from the top, bottom, right, and left of the frame. Again, the point is to tap the appropriate button as it reaches the center.
Missing notes in Offense and Defense lowers Gitaroo Man's HP, if it hits zero you fail the song. The in-game reason for the different phases is basically which character in the music battle is supposed to be attacking, with Offense representing Gitaroo Man, and Defense representing his enemy. Other than that they're basically all one song. Sometimes if you didn't inflict enough damage in one set of Offense and Defense phases, it will repeat so you can get another crack at it. In some songs a Charge phase will occur before this so you can gain a little more HP before retrying.

I know this would be difficult to implement with a keyboard due to its focus on the analog stick, but having it as a mode in Osu would be another awesome way to play and a cool way to pay tribute to iNiS's legacy. It can also definitely be simplified to include just the basic Offense and Defense phases since there's no story to tie in. Would anyone else be interested in Gitaroo style being added to Osu?

You could possibly code something like that using the osu!Lazer client.
