Put your middle finger over your index or the other way around and voila! problem solved

You say that but speed is not the problem most people face when they need to alternate. It's control and using 3 fingers isn't going to bring any favours.
shortpotato
u can try using 3fingers but only tap 2 keys

I'm assuming using an external hot key program to map the C key to the Z key is against the rules?
abraker
I think the rule is that as long the player is playing on their profile, it's ok. That means no bot, no one can play for you, and no hacking. You can, also by any means, use any device that involves direct user input (not synthesized input). By synthesized input I mean having caps lock, for instance, spam click for you. Mapping to another key is not synthesized input because it's taking your direct input from another key. Correct me if I am wrong though.

Can't you just rebind ingame or is this somehow different?
Mahogany
I'm guessing he means while still keeping the Z key functional as a tapping key. If I had to guess, Osu only allows you to have 2 keys bound to clicking at once: I'm assuming he's talking about being able to use Z X and C to tap at the same time.

Even if you did use an external program to set, for example, c as a third input such as m1 or m2 (I think this isn't allowed btw, may count as macroing), the way it works is that if you have z (k1) held down, m1 won't work, and if you have x (k2) held down, m2 won't work, the game only allows you to have two keys pressed down.

This is why tap/x or click/x is called that, and not tap/z, cos those two buttons would clash and not allow each other to be pressed (unless you bound z to k2).

Even if you did hack the game so that you could have 3 or more inputs that work simultaneously, gl getting the UR and accuracy and finger control to utilize that playstyle. A better and easier alternative, is to just improve like everyone else, you should be able to play more than fast enough with the regular two fingers, or m1k2 if you're committed to learning it, don't try and look for a secret shortcut, 3+ key playstyle isn't gonna make you obama or make up for your weaknesses, it would most likely just make you mash.

tl;dr you can't use 3 fingers in the way you describe, play more

ooo, touchy subject

This has come up multiple times, but nobody has ever reached a consensus. It's kind of a gray area, because while it is direct user input (and obviously not a macro), the game itself doesn't offer the option to use three keys - and most importantly, the input is being manipulated (this is also debatable. Using software such as AutoHotkey to change that is probably input manipulation, but lower-level alternatives such as registry tweaking or changing the bindings through a driver might not). I don't think anyone has been punished because of it as of yet, but as I said, it's a huge gray area. You could do that, but I wouldn't

Besides, the most obvious solution is play with two keys, so why not go with that?
Bladesu
Instead of trying to find useless ways to play just use two buttons and get used to it.

Funny you talk about people calling it tap/x because I always called it tap/z since I used my middle finger for my left hand and my index for my mouse so I ran into that problem myself and mapped k2 to the Z key xD

I had to read that at least five times to make out a clue about what you were saying. Also what's the big deal? Is there something I'm missing?

1. install autohotkey
2. bind z to c in a way that once c is pressed it also gets released immediately.
3. learn to piano tap z,x,c in exactly that consecutive order exclusively. else it won't work.
4. make sure you don't use c for sliders/spinners
5. get banned for scripting.

...

6. profit?

sadly osu! doesn't allow more than 2 input keys by design.

Wasn't this game originally "designed" as a game where you could only use your mouse? I don't remember tablets being part of the original game. Not to mention the fact that apparently taking your keyboard apart and taping the key contacts to your fingers is seen as legitimate enough to be added to the wiki.

It should really come down to what is disruptive to actually playing the game. If you've ever read David Sirlin's Playing To Win, you'll know what I mean. Nothing should be banned except for what takes the gaming out of the game (aka breaks the game) - if some new tactic or exploit is useful, so be it.

Honestly, I don't know if what I described indeed was a bannable offense. I just think of it like altering the game code which is not allowed as well as the result not being intended by the designers.

At my very beginning I was messing around with autohotkey for exactly that purpose. I wanted to be able to use 3-4 fingers to each one button with my sanwa buttons i had on my fighting stick. And I quickly noticed that something prevented me from successfully alternating 4 buttons in quick succession. And that was the game code. It doesn't allow more than 3 buttons to be pressed at the same time. In fact, the way I had to map my keyboard of course was by incorporating mouse buttons into those 2 additional keys. But the one of the mouse buttons is not allowed to be pressed at the same time with one of the keyboard buttons while the other one doesn't actuate with the respective other key. It only works if you release the button before you can press and activate the respective "forbidden" key. Same goes for pressing the same button "twice" at the same time. If you map another x next your x key the game won't register both keys as seperate inputs when pressed at the same time while pressing z and x at the same moment obviously works.

It works with 3-4 buttons the way I described it in my other post. But again, I refrained from doing any of this and stuck to 2 keys to save me probable tears.

How is input manipulation modifying the game code? It's not like I'm decompiling it, changing the code and recompiling. I play with both the mouse and keyboard (singletapping on mouse, triplets on alternated mouse, streams on alternated keyboard), so I use 4 keys. Should I be banned for that? I mean, it's built in the game.

Mapping, say, C and V to Z and X should be okay - I'm not making that call, but if that was the case, I'd give it the green light. Using 4 keys has the obvious limit of 2 simultaneous keys, but the way I see it, it's just another playstyle, and 100% possible.

I primarily addressed the method I described in my first post which circumvents the activation lock when 2 same bottons are pressed. This imho is like cheating the game code because you'd take away the aspect of having to release button a before button b should activate technically.

I am not as sure about the way of remapping the way you described it. It is most certainly viable with 4 buttons/fingers in terms of finger technique and consistency regarding releasing key 1 (2) before key 3 (4) is pressed. This op asked about 3 buttons though which makes things more difficult since you'd have to perfectly release the 3rd button every time before pressing 1st again. Some players hold their keys longer than necessary for sliders. This might as well become an issue once you encounter quick slider combos.

I don't know why on earth anyone would want 3 tapping keys. That just seems a lot more complex for streams and such.

It feels far more natural to my fingers than using two keys. I can feel much more of a rhythmic flow between each tap than with two fingers.

As a guitar player it felt only natural to me to use at least 3 keys at the beginning. Constantly alternating with 3 fingers with a set order is hard to get used to though.

If you are going to remap your keys and not dumb, you'd map the third key to the first and the fourth to the second. 3 buttons might not work as well as 4 because then you'd go from third to first (which are the same) or from second to third (which can be the same too). Either way, it's bad because you need to release one of the keys really quick

Circumventing the activation lock is an obvious client modification and therefore likely bannable
