Improving One's Timing?

Greetings.

I've been trying to work on my timing recently, since I can play fast songs just fine at a 4 or even 5 star rating, depending on the song, but rhythmatic songs I struggle to even get a C on with a 3-star difficulty. I first started by playing with HD on, to test my listening. I failed quickly on the songs in question, but could play songs like Tsukasa - Accelerator [Sakuya's Heavy] with no problems. I then tried playing with my volume muted, to test my reading. I did no better or worse with my sound muted than I did with it unmuted on the rhythmatic songs, or on Accelerator.

I believe that I rely on my reading too much, but how would one improve their listening? Just play with HD on a lot until I'm used to it? And subsequently, would that actually improve my timing? Here are a few of the maps in question that I'm having difficulty with timing on:
07th Expansion - Happiness of Marionette [Hard]
GIRL NEXT DOOR - Orion [orion is Orion]
Kawada Mami - Prophecy (TV Size) [Insane]

In addition, I'd appreciate if you'd refrain from the typical "Play More" responses. I get it, playing more will help to solve these problems, and I already do play multiple hours daily. But I'd really like a more efficient way to approach improving my timing than just playing until my hands and eyes are bleeding.

I do appreciate any help, though!

I wouldn't recommend using hidden until you are at ~4.5 star maps because
using HD on maps below 4 star relies on reading when the circles disappear rather than listening.
I might be wrong but when I started playing HD on maps above 4.5 star rating
it was much easier - that's probably because there are much more circles on higher difficulties to help match the beats.

That maps that you listed are pretty old maps. Old maps tend to be much harder to
read with hidden so try using hidden on newer maps instead.
I honestly think that you should reach harder map difficulty before you start using hidden

Hidden is for suckers.
Noobsicle
play with 70% music 100% effect

play a variety of maps

watch auto play the map and try to mimic the rhythm

enable hit error meter to see if you're hitting too early or too late

use your ears

Raniemi,

Thanks for the input, I do think that you probably have a point. At this point, I'm only using HD because I believe that it would help me practice my listening, but as you said, that's probably not the case, I do find myself reading the notes disappearing more than actually listening.

The problem then becomes, how to practice listening at the stage I am at? I've hit a bit of a wall where my reading and speed can keep up with maps that are into the 4-5 star range, but my accuracy and listening can't keep up, so I want to play 4-5 star maps, but I can never get above a C on them because of my lackluster accuracy.

I appreciate your input though, I'll definitely keep it in mind.

You can get by just fine on 4-5 stars with shit accuracy. 8-)

Hmm.. That may be true to a degree, but it's inefficient. I got a C on Saiya - Remote Control [Insane] for example, but since my accuracy was so terrible (76.27%), it didn't even place onto my Top Ranks table, anywhere.

That means I'd have to improve my accuracy to actually gain any pp from the map then, in any case. Sure I could get more from just FC'ing 3-4 star maps, but they aren't nearly as fun to play.
Yuudachi-kun
Get more from FCing 4-5 stars. I still regret my 1 miss on remote control, even if it had 80% acc - still happy with 119 pp. I just try to FC maps and not give a shit about accuracy.
Synpoo
play hidden
Saphirshroom
If you want to get good at the game, play maps that are slow for you and where you can get 95+% accuracy on it and try to improve there. You can increase your speed once you got a solid foundation.

Well, that isn't necessarily possible at the moment, but I guess that's where the inevitable "play more" would come in. I still highly value accuracy, and accuracy includes FC, I can barely FC as is because my timing is so bad that if the BPM or rhythm of a song basically ever changes, I'll miss a note or mess up my combo.

I appreciate all the info though. I'll give it a shot and see how far I can get, I suppose.

@exozion,

I'm getting a lot of mixed messages about this whole HD thing at this point

I'd say the exact contrary. Low down sounds effect (you can do that using alt + up/down) but keep them.

And most of all :
use your ears
You need to listen to the music you're playing and then clic/tap in rythm with it, based on what you read.

Play these two until you FC them. They're relatively easy and would beat your top pp scores if you can get an S.

2/3 of my playcount is with hidden, its all I used from the day I made my account. basically....play more with it and you get the hang of it without thinking about it much. You don't wanna hear 'play more'....but thats all there is to it really

I dunno how anybody can sit here and try explain to you how to ''improve listening/rhythm". Assuming your ears work and the volume is on it just comes from playing more...some people learn slower than others and thats that
Saphirshroom
Count the time whilst playing.
Or at least attempt to.

Always appreciative of beatmap suggestions. I'll give it a shot. In any case, I looked at your profile, just what on earth did you do over the past month to jump that insanely in rank? I mean, color me impressed if nothing else.

Well I suppose you do have a point. There's always more efficient ways of doing things, though. For example, HD removes approach circles, meaning you inherently have to rely more on listening than you do on reading, which means it's more efficient for learning to listen that it would be to play without HD. At least logically that's how it should be. I created the thread to get second opinions on this, mostly.
Yuudachi-kun
I bought a tablet and did 400+ plays a day for a week straight. Then school started and I just played for fun and work on my terrible tapping until I decided to go for pp again this weekend.
E m i
create a mental metronome of half notes in your head
then connect your mental metronome ticks to circles. hidden can be tricky at times, while having approach circles enables you to predict the future more consistently.
tapping on every second tick is simple
on streams, fill the gap between ticks with your secondary finger

and listen to hitsounds.

I progressed slowly by practicing to get 98%+ accuracy consistently on maps that are 4 stars or below first.
Try to focus on keeping a steady tempo and you will naturally rely less on approach circles.
