What are the preferred background aspect ratio/dimensions?

I'm thinking about getting back into making beatmaps, but because I've been away from osu! for so long and because the game now fully supports widescreen displays, I was wondering if I should aim for 4:3 or 16:9 background images and videos. Is there a preferred aspect ratio, as well as general size recommendations in terms of the resolution?

Background images must be at a maximum of 1024x768 pixels for 4:3, 1366x768 pixels for 16:9. Although 1366x768 (16:9) is recommended, most background ratios that are 4:3 or 16:9 should also work reasonably well (for example, 800x600 or 852x480). Using an image with a different ratio is fine, but will result in letterboxing (black bars at the top/bottom of the screen) or upscaling (resized image to fill the whole screen).
1366x768 is the most used nowadays I guess.

Thanks. Another quick question: What video formats does osu! support these days, and what are the best free editors to trim and silence MP4 and FLV files I download from YouTube?

Use Fremake Video Converter , an useful tool to remove audio and convert videos to many video formats. (including .avi).
