I think it's mandatory to be successful in osu! mrekk wears them all the time you just can't see them.
If you need some recommendations I would advise these:
-6 pair High Thig Sock
- DRESHOW 2 PAIR EXTRA LONG (osu! color scheme)
- Moon Wood Thigh high socks

You can, but you'll get stuck eventually if you don't.
