I feel like the only painful thing about grinding my way to 5 digit is how long it might take, but am I considered a 5 digit? Or just a 6 digit who grinded his way up there?

Is there an actual metric to these things? Star ratings? Accuracy? Top plays? Somebody gotta tell me

Well, grinding to 5 digit is hard... you need like 200-250 pp top plays. It usually takes arround 2 years for a person to hit 5 digit (if consistent). Almost every 5 digit has a 6 star fc and 7 or 8 star passes(with good acc).
I would recommend you to push your limits by playing harder maps which are out of your comfort zone. Practice stream maps, jump maps, stamina, finger control etc etc… I am a 300k and I am climbing ranks by only focusing on improving, if I played for PP...I might have been a 200-150k.

having a certain number of digits in your rank is completely arbitrary, there's no point in having any kind of convoluted metric for determining whether you "deserve" any given rank

if you are 5 digit, you deserve to be 5 digit in the current system. if you end up going back above 100k because of decay or a pp rework, you no longer deserve to be 5 digit. it's as simple as that.

The actual metric is... your rank.

As for who is deserving, that is a pretty nebulous thing.

Rank is just based on how good you are in farming and how often you can pop off. If you can farm better than them, then hooray!!! cool!!!! so awesome!!!! However, you'll see some people who can do worse or better than you in certain aspect of skills no matter the rank, take one trick players as an example.

There's no such thing as 'undeserving'. You're at your rank because you put in the work for it, regardless if someone lower than you might technically be more skilled.
