New combos, when to start

Sorry if im not looking hard enough in the forum but I tried.

When do you know when to start a new combo? I always see a lot of people saying "NC" for new combo during the modding process.

Usually you want to add new combos in a pattern that follows the music, following measures or stanzas is usually a good way of doing it (Ex. Every 2 tall white ticks). However, I have seen them used for visibility, and representing changes in what the map is following in the music

To add to what bliss said, make the combos change at regular time lengths. Also consider where phrases finish--melody lines often occur as a lead-in to the next bar, so it'd be better to put a new combo on the lead-in. Similarly, a phrase--or an entire section--may end on a new bar, so one would ideally have the last object occur here and then a new combo.
