Single tapping can be taken pretty far, your other skills would have be at very good level if singletapping was holding you back.
Even saying "when its necessary" can be pretty complicated, but basically that's a good style. That's the basic way of playing anyway. You might call it just single tapping. If you are a "single tapper" that doesn't mean you single tap everything, of course they would stream streams, not tap them.
That being said, there's really no draw back to learning to alt, especially if you learn a good technique, I believe alternating makes you have higher UR as a whole, but that might have changed, players might have refined their alting to the same spec as others single tap. And not to mention, you can just do BOTH! And switch between them however you want

Most players use a hybrid playstyle that consists of both alternating and single-tapping techniques where the player single-taps most of the map and alternates on places where they have to (Triplets, Bursts, Streams, etc.)
Streaming shouldn't be confused with alting. Alting in the common talk just means using two buttons in a case where you would traditionally just use one. So, it doesn't make you a hybrid alternator to perform streams with two buttons.
