I am extremely bothered by censorship, and want my chat uncensored. There is an option for this "Offensive Word Filter" and when I turn it off, it doesn't work. Words are still filtered. Please make this option actually work.

Yeah, some words are still being censored. but I think it well censor even more foul words if you turn it on.

I wouldn't want to see anything else than the censored fark for example. It can't be that bad.

Could you explain the reasoning why any words at all would be censored even when the filter is turned off? The very idea that I'm not seeing the same thing people are typing is repugnant. Sure, I'll get over it, but I don't see why it's even necessary: It made my esteem for the development decisions here drop a notch; It's dishonest and degrading. You already have the filter opt-out. It should actually opt you out.

I think I found the post of peppy explaining this behaviour:

The filter acts in stealth to avoid backfire and user aggression. Other games which have a filter that is visible to the sender results in users regularly going out of their way to avoid it, as they know it exists.

This game is played be a very large-ranged audience age. It is intended to be a game — not an open forum for discussion of sexual preferences. Please take your conversations to PM (where they will not be filtered) or to another location.
I don't quite agree with this too, but well I don't want to start a possible flamewar.

Thanks for finding the quote. I would suggest that it backfires and causes user aggression when people find out they are being deceived, as is inevitable. I hope the development team does not decide to walk down this road any further: it doesn't lead to a good place.

This is intentional behavior. I do not think this thread will change their mind.

Also please back up your claims that it causes user aggression.

but that's what peppy said (7 months ago), I guess you'll have to get an answer from him.

I was referring to the OP. How does censorship create user aggression?

oh, the other way around.
Yeah, I'll ask the same question then. People will in most cases just get insulted without this censorship.

Discovering that you are being deceived causes user aggression. Do I really need to prove that? I'm sorry that I can't back this up with actual statistics. Can you prove that this system actually reduces user aggression? I don't see the proof of that when actually reading chat.

If you want a case, then I'll use myself. Discovering that I was being deceived caused me to become extremely angry, and while I don't normally swear, it certainly made me angry enough to swear for a bit. The deception is worse than the censorship itself, it felt like being betrayed. I was going to donate money, but now I'm seriously reconsidering that. I did not want to bring that up, because I consider posts like that to be in poor taste, but it is the truth. How can I support a team that actively deceives their users?

This thread may not change anyone's minds, true; and you may not care that this affects my decisions on who to give money to, but expressing my outrage at this behavior is the only venue I have available to deal with my anger at this.

If people get insulted by offensive language, that is what an opt-out language filter is designed to remedy. Deceiving your users about the existence of that filter will not prevent people who are determined to ruin other people's experience from doing so. It is not necessary to use offensive words to insult and demean people, and it is my assertion that making a single word filtered server side accomplishes more harm than good.

Deceit, realizing the game is modifying the words you say, doesn't actually cause THAT much of anger for users. Most of them'll know their words were changed, and the people reading the messages are less likely to fire back in another stream of insults due to the filter. I don't see why someone would be that angry for that, anyways. The filter system is good as it is: it stops the violent behavior and keeps the chat nice and healthy. I don't really see where it harms the users more than it does good to them; as peppy's post said, the filter works incognito to be more efficient in filtering bad words.

A few censored words could be removed from the list of filtered words, and be made that overusing of potentially offensive words results in silence.

But, as TheVileOne said, I don't think a thread will make the staff change their mind.

I also don't think necroposting on a 4 year old thread will make anyone happy or benefit this game or the forums.

Please, never again. Especially on an archived topic
