I assume you know how to find the mean and median. The median is a better measure when there are outliers which skew the mean. If you take four people whose salaries are 6k, 6k, 6k and 14k, the three 6k people would be mad if you reported the mean income of the group as 8k. As a side note, there are some cases where the mean and median of a data set are very close, but it doesn't quite paint the full picture. What else would you use to describe the data in such a case?
