So there's this one rule that doesn't allow diff names that only consists of the (guest or not) mapper's username but this rule is kinda old and was made (if i recall correctly) because of the old star rating system being kinda bad (different type of diffs having the same sr).
Now that the star system can actually express a diff's difficulty this rule is kinda useless so it would be great if it got removed.

I don't think it's just star rating since this thread isn't even two years old

I also don't think SR is good enough on its own; there are a ton of edge cases that it can't handle at all. Perhaps most notably, low bpm insanes tend to look like hard diffs even though they can easily have rhythm that's too complex for hard diff players. Proper diffnames are important in cases like these.

In addition to lewski's points above I'd also like to add that -- looking back -- one of the major reason(s) as to why this rule was put into place was to prevent things like this where it's genuinely impossible to tell which diff corresponds to which actual difficulty level by looking at their difficulty names only :

...yeah. And although you can argue that "osu!'s Star Rating calculation algorithm has been improved dramatically from the older days", unfortunately in the end you'll have to consider that

a) there will always be subjectivity involved when it comes to "determining how difficult a beatmap is", and
b) under such condition edge cases exist and will always exist in some way no matter how perfect the calculation algorithm is (in which, as lewski already said, "proper diffnames are important in cases like these").

All in all I don't really see this kind of practice (in the form that you suggested, at least) to make its return anytime soon, unfortunately :(

if enough ppl want this back, I feel it might be easier to propose allowing it only where diff names are already lax:

RC wrote:

Difficulty names in a beatmap must be clearly progressive and accurately indicating of their respective difficulties, excluding:
  1. The highest difficulty of each game mode.
  2. The highest difficulties of each game mode with a similar level of difficulty, applying only to Insane and Extra difficulties (e.g. the Insane difficulties of a ENHIIII set or the Extra difficulties of a ENHIIXXX set).
in these cases, most of the time what people write as diff names actually says a lot less about the map than a mapper's name would, IMO

but if that's not really the point of the proposal this can be ignored 🏃
