There's Stepmania, Guitar Zero, UltraStar Deluxe and Be-Pachi, and if you're willing to spend a few bucks, there's also Audiosurf. Oh, and osu!, but you don't need a link to that.

The Ouendan and EBA games are obvious, in case you haven't played them before. As well as Gitaroo Man, Rez, and Amplitude if you have a PS2.

About PS2 there is also Dance Dance Revolution ;]

If you felt like importing, there's GuitarFreaks and DrumMania, as well as Beatmania/IIDX and Pop'n Music.
Loginer
And while we're at it, let's not forget the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games. The Taiko no Tatsujin games are also good, if you're OK with importing.
awp
There's a north american taiko game =x

I'm in Europe, so I have to import it, anyway. Besides, good luck finding it in a physical store.

There's one in my local GameStop for $19,99 USD.

As for netgames, if you look on the Wikipedia, you'll find that there are sims.

I know of Feeling Pomu and Step'n Music for Pop'n, but of course, Pop'n is my field of expertise. xD

In The Groove 2 is the best arcade dancing game out, and probably will remain as such for another good 10 years. Don't let anyone else tell you different without looking it up first.

BeatMania is always fun, but unfortunately it's hard to find in the States. You can buy the US PS2 version to get the controller at the very least.

Hardly. Stepmania is much better (Stepmania can be played on an arcade machine, and ITG is based on Stepmania's engine), if only for the .mp3 support and skins.

Umm...maybe if you're playing in an arcade. StepMania with a metal pad otherwise owns it.

BeatMania can be fun, but IIDX is where it's at.

Thing about that is, on an SM machine, people can abuse the songs that are just under the limit for a song that counts as 2 songs. The latest revision of In The Groove limits the songs to 2:15, a reasonable stepchart length, so you never have to worry about some jackass playing a bunch of 3 minute songs. Regardless, I was talking about commercial arcade dance games.

I think IIDX is implied whenever BeatMania is mentioned. Better not bank on that one though.

Oh come on, 3 minute songs can be fun, shut up. D:

Also, Loginer, just apply more pressure. I was able to do freeze arrows despite being light when I started.

Next, I kinda rate Pump It Up Exceed/another version of PiU I can't remember the name of with ITG2 as an amazing game.

Not for all of the people who have their coins up waiting for you to finish. If you have the machine on freeplay in your garage or after closing in your friends' arcade, you can spend as long as you want with your turn, but when the arcade is operating, 9 times out of 10 there'll be somebody waiting to play after you. That's why the custom song length limit on ITG2 makes sense.

Giving a shit is standard arcade etiquette. I don't see how it's alright to hold up the line by playing more than you payed for. It's not like the line consists solely of jerks who try to rush you off of the machine. Most folks just wanna stop in, play a couple of rounds just like everyone else, and then go about their business in a reasonable timeframe.

Besides, a good portion of 3 minute songs tend to get unbearably boring by the end.

When it comes to FREE GOOD Rhythm games that you DOWNLOAD onto your WINDOWS computer then all I can think of is Stepmania and Osu!

But taking away those conditions then I say Audiosurf is the BEST RHYTHM GAME YOU CAN COME BY

It's $10 and steam exclusive but YOU CAN USE ANY SONG, ANY, SONG, IT SCANS IT AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL

Plus it has amazing trippy visuals and many different ways to play.

Plus fun multi-player :D(But it's Local only)
ash
audiosurf is far from the best; srsly

good, but not great

I payed a dollar to use the machine, I think I could get my money's worth by playing whatever damn song I feel like. Besides, if it looks like someone's in a hurry, I finish my song and let them use the rest of whatever I have, then let them have their own paid turn. Patience is a wonderful thing, remember this. :\

Then you must not have played some very fun long songs. ):

Haha, the place I go to that has a DDR machine(since Arcades are 100% dead where I live unless they're LAZAA ARCAYDS) is a local game store and the machines set to 75 cents for 3 songs :D, After reading this little debate which brought up $1 for 2 songs I feel lucky.
Mogsy
The place I play ITG is $1 for 3 songs, but where the single DDR machine is (which is much closer), it's 50 cents for 3 songs.

Also, Loginer, EAT FOOD. Eat FATTENING FOOD. Gain enough weight so you can at least hold down freeze arrows on a metal pad. :U

I've got a new game for you, then. It's called "Eat your weight in bacon." If you don't have a heart attack, you move on to the next round. You win by surviving 10 rounds. The prize? You play again.

On the whole ITG discussion, the song length doesn't really matter anyway. People can patch up .ogg files so that the machine thinks the song is 1:45 but it allows you to play through the entire song and chart. Plus, on certain machines, it doesn't matter. I play in Southern California(where the recent ITG Open Tourney was held and where most of the best players are) and the machine I play on most often is a 75 cent 4 song machine[Singles/Couples/Doubles] where none of the songs count as 2 songs. The machine has around 1k songs, over half being insane 14-16 footers that are 7-8 minutes in length.
Now I know it's good etiquette to not play for a LONG time, as do most people, but you'll still find annoying people that do it anyway.

BTW what footers do you guys play? I'm doing mid 11s right now... Luckily I've been able to have this guy give me pointers
Mogsy
Honestly, I suck at ITG/pad based rhythm games. On DDR, I can do 8s. I think the best I've done on ITG2 is pass Robotix.
Detective Tuesday
Passed everything 'cept Pandemonium Expert on ITG2, and then they took the arcade outta the mall, so that was the end of that story. I'd have to go all the way to Chinatown Fair or 8otb to play again, and I'm not gonna make an actual trip to play the game, even though either one is just about 40 minutes.

Also, since then I've probably gotten much worse. Or maybe I need some fresh air after every fast song. I could play at least on 12 per game, but after that I'm like "nah bring on the slow tunes".
SoupNBread
I'm in an area where I have 2 machines within 10-20 minutes of me, but I'm also in an area where it seems everyone but me does 14+ charts. It's a bit daunting but everyone's nice.

Any tips on getting stamina up? I've been trying to pass Hardcore Symphony but I just don't have the stamina.
Detective Tuesday
I'm not sure what I can say about building stamina. For one thing, the bar will obviously increase it by lots, but you're probably already using that. Another way is to move around less, if that makes sense. You don't have to lift too far off of the pad, and you don't have to bring your entire foot to the arrow that you're pressing. Probably nothing you haven't heard, but still something to keep in mind.

Of course, no matter how you play, endurance will build up in time. Believe me I remember being at the "tryin'a pass Hardcore Symphony" level, and how quickly I grew out of it. You'll be passing twelves by the end of the year even if you don't play more than once a week. Just push it to the limit on your last song every time.

Third, get it right.

Also, how could I? I grew up with GuitarFreaks as one of my rhythm games of choice (back when the arcade around here still existed). I honestly prefer GF because it's a lot harder and it's got a special spot in my heart that GH can't enter (It's close to Pop'n, that's how close it is).

In short: fanboyism + THIS CAME FIRST, HURR
Loginer
So basically, you have absolutely no good reason to hate GH. <_<
Also, both games are difficult, just in different ways. GF throws in a lot of notes at the same chords, while GH/RB spreads them out more, but have fewer of them (Most of the time). And 5 frets are harder to handle than 3. A lot of the GF songs look extremely hard, but that's mainly because of the note speed.
chtxdrgn
I've never heard of guitar freak ever before.

And frets on fire has customizable maps, so I don't see what's the big deal..

chtxdrgn wrote:

Frets on Fire doesn't seem to have standards or organization though, so getting GOOD customized songs is hard. I got a pack of 40 to 80 songs and about 12 of them were good.

Guitar Hero is easy to bullshit through, simply put. I managed to play through Hard Mode on GH1 without ever having played GH before, Star Powering through every section that gave me trouble, not even getting used to the controls by the end of Bark at the Moon. I've since gotten better, playing maybe 5 or 6 times a year, and I'll admit it's a fun game when you're hanging out with people and you forgot to bring a Monopoly board, but it's nothing to take seriously. Hell, the scoring system is probably even more of a joke than Ouendan.
fdtoonsman
I loved Guitar Hero... for a week.
Mogsy
So, I played Pop'n at a friend's place about a week ago for the first time in like a year. Yeah, I didn't suck as much as I thought I should (I can still do EX), but I didn't FC [Lamento]. Agreed. Still the best console, and if anyone doesn't have it yet it's more than worth it for the price before moving onto the next-gen consoles.

And Mogsworth, if you do end up modding your Slim, you'll want a BeatMania controller also =P. There are more IIDX styles on PS2 than anyone knows what to do with.

SM is definitely my favorite rhythm game as of now. I started DDR waaay back like 7ish years ago, wound up quitting ITG randomly about a year ago, though recently I've been wanting to get back into it. Just found out about osu from the forums over at FFR.

Have you guys seen stuff for Ubeat? New bemani game that looks pretty cool. 4x4 touch screen grid that flashes to the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uWu5QHQWEc In a week or two the arcade/family fun center near me is getting to test it along with DDR X. I remember reading somewhere that you pretty much take the original difficulty and multiply it by 1.5 to get the new rating. Max 300 is now a 15... I wonder where an ITG 15 would sit on DDRX's new system?

Have you seen pics of the DDRX cabinet? Looks pretty damn spiffy but they are probably going to be REALLY expensive. I'm hoping to see someone gut one of these and run ITG on it.
