[resolved] [confirmed] osu! freezes using OpenGL and unlimited FPS

Problem Details:
Osu! freezes when you click on something if you put the game on OpenGL and Unlimited FPS, now I can't change the options again ingame. Is there any way I can chage them out of the game?

Hold shift while double clicking icon. A prompt with settings should come up.

Edit: Actually, I'll confirm this since its a very common problem out here.

Happens both on test and public, windows 8.1, HD 4000 GPU.

Thanks for the help! Changing the FPS didn't work out for me, had to change to DirectX.

This happens on a small minority of computers, but still statistically significant. I don't think anyone on the dev team has a computer that experiences the problem though, so it's a bit tricky to fix.

My proposed solution would be to keep directX support. Who wants to restart everytime they want to change their limiter anyways?

Edit: Just checked and even my new (well actually it's an older model than my last graphics card) spazzes out when at a framerate other than 60 in openGl. I have a Ge Force 6200.

My best guess is that the framerate calculator is using code that isn't supported by older graphics cards.

Actually, I have this same problem. For some reason, I'm not able get the settings up by pressing shift before double clicking. Is there any way to change osu settings using the game files?

happens to me too, instant freeze if i try to enter edit / play mode with openGL enabled.

Same problem here with the screen stalling, only DirectX crashes my game too (hence why I'm using OpenGL) so I can't play at all. :(

Only thing that doesn't stall or crash for me right now is 60fps vsync OpenGL (horrible!)... Dunno why.

I also had this, but I changed it using the cfg file in the osu folder.
Go to notepad, and change the cfg file with your name, and search for renderer, and change it

hi! i'm having the same problem right now. . . . mi sister changed the option of directX to openGL and since then my game is not the same, it's REALLY slow, and i can't change the settings in the game because of it's so slow. . .. . . . DX i don't know what to do. . . please help me :cry:

So recently, I decided to screw around with my settings, I tried out unlimited FPS on OpenGL and that freezed my whole thing. I switched to DirectX and it seems fine. However, I can't go back to OpenGL at all. Even after altering all the settings. Does that mean I'll never be able to play in OpenGL again?

Yeah but for me Directx is unrunnable because my computer is slow. If I try to reinstall nothing happens and if I shift double click back to 60fps opengl It asks me to restart (which I have to click to do, which freezes the game)

I have this exact same behaviour (in addition to screen artifacts soometimes) on my laptop when using intel hd4000 (from the cpu).
Goes away when I activate my GT740 though (by default, osu is using hd4000 on a fresh install).

I just accidentally did this to myself, whoops.

To give graphics card info, I'm working with Intel HD Graphics Family 2500 I believe. It's an integrated graphics card that came with the computer. Windows 8.1 if that makes a difference.

at some random moment it freeze the game, but after a while it continues again, and freeze again.
also the freeze time is also random too, could be long and could be short too..
this is weird since i never experience this before.
also, there's 2 weird behavior:
1. When the freeze occurs, and then it stops, osu commonly skip some time.so when you play some maps and you got this problem, all notes skipped will missed and you probably fail.for the good explanation : ------0\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\1---------
2. when the freeze occurs, and then it stops, osu rarely continue at the part where the freeze start so the freeze is only adding some delay time instead of skipping the time. for the good explanation : -------0\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\0----------

Well, at least as far as I'm aware, no one can (properly) run OpenGL with the framelimiter set to 'unlimited'.
With that in mind I'd like to say the following...

Why not automatically apply a frame limiter as soon as OpenGL is selected, and make the user unable to select 'unlimited'?
(If DirectX is used again, make the 'unlimited' frame limiter option available again, of course.)
While that doesn't solve the issue, at the very least people won't get 'stuck' and have to look for a solution.

Just my 2 cents.

The thing is, unlimited FPS on OpenGL is supposed to work, and actually does on almost all computers (including every dev's, which is why it's not fixed yet.) Only certain graphics cards don't function with it, and so it's hard to track down and fix when we're entirely unable to replicate.

Either I'm going crazy and this has always worked, or it does work now, without any hardware or software changes on my end.
(Aside from disabling/enabling SLI perhaps. Running 2 nvidia gtx 580s.)

I'm really confused right now.

Doesn't seem to happen on ce45 anymore, no. I guess I'll do that then..
