NB: If you don't want to read my mutualing rant in full, see the TL:DR at the bottom <3 (also, since there's a 1k mutual cap now, some of my points don't matter as much anymore, but yeah) Generally:
Before I start out, know that this is a rant that isn't meant to nudge at any particular people, just my general thought process. I really like being approached by others and talking with them - it's fun!
For that reason I'm actually kinda sad that I have to write this honestly, since I do want to talk with people, and I consider myself very outgoing - but the second people ask me if I want to add them, I get thrown off.
Here's why:
What mutuals are to me:
"Facebook friends" is what I feel most of the osu! community views mutuals like. You talk with them for a week tops, you add them because one of the parts asked, and then slowly over time, you are mutual, but don't talk for a several months at a time.
I view mutuals as a list of people I've done something very memorable with, or is just in general a good longstanding friend that I've talked to or known well for a long time.
This prob seems off-putting to some people - But I very very rarely ask people myself. I almost always add people on my own volition, and if they happened to have added me, that's great! c:
The friend limit:
Friend lists having a limit would be a good thing, if mutuals weren't viewed as a list of acquaintances rather than longlasting friends. It makes me have to prioritize who to delete, and that's really hard for me to just do, because I feel like I'm removing someone from my life, and I don't want it to feel that way.
Why I still add people sometimes:
I'm awful at saying no about these things if I genuinely don't think we've talked enough before the mutual at hand, or not done something often with each other, 'cause I think it'll hurt the people in question if I do. I'm not a person that likes denying others, because I take it to heart myself too.
This is the same reason I don't ask others unless if something is written about that on their profile and I actually want to add them.
In general I just want people to take the no for what it is, and not take it to heart - I don't have ill intentions when I say no, I just think stuff is going too fast for me to be comfortable.
Status:
There's also some people that have this thought process that having top players or well-known players as a mutual is something really cool and special. This notion is understandable, but I don't want to be viewed as a unique player - just someone that likes having fun with talking/playing games/doing hobbies (like mapping, tourneys or studying japanese) etc with the people I'm mutual with. For that I'm honestly worried when people ask for mutual after a very short time, that the status symbol thing is the reason they ask in the first place.
If you asked me in the past and I said no:
Please don't take it to heart, if I said no or ignored the message ;w;. I don't do it because I don't wanna talk with you or something of a similar caliber - I literally just don't view mutuals the same way as others do, and want to at least know that you aren't viewing me a status mutual rather than a friend.
Conclusively:
I kinda wish mutuals weren't viewed this way. It sucks to feel like you're hurting someone because of a simple button press.
It's been hard to know how to phrase this topic, since it's been bothering me for at least a year at this point because of the friend limit and my general thoughts towards mutualing.
I appreciate anyone messaging me with good intent, and I love talking, but I am always afraid about people asking for mutual out of nowhere, because I want mutuals to be memorable and not just a click of a button. To me it will be very obvious that you view me as a friend, if you don't ask about mutualing, since that will make the mutual a lot more special to me
Know that if I do say no, that it's not because I don't wanna talk with you, I just find it unnecessary to ask in the first place, if we are already good friends <3
TL;DR:
I'm more strict with mutualing people than most, which makes me prefer adding people on my own volition - I will feel pretty uncomfy about the whole ordeal, and don't want to feel like I'm hurting you by saying no.
- Worst HR player (and anyone else that plays my skillsets, but miles better) - -GN/Kalanluu (and other good vibes chill reading/FL players) - Trail Mix (and any other leaderboard HDHR gamers <3 They motivate me to do it more) - Hanori (and other friends who have been part of my osu journey for almost a decade)

[centre]Pools that are too large have virtually no distinct maps. - Mappools that are shorter (max 4 per mod) will show map variation easier than large pools. - Mappools that are shorter will require less practice time, which will often result in more teams showing up, and less mappool creation time. - An ideal pool is to have BO13 in finals with a 6-2-2-2-3 set-up and 1 ban. This will make the diversity shine through, since if TB is reached, all maps (except bans) have been picked. - A different option is BO15 with 5-3-3-3-3, and 1 ban, yet no-mod doesn't get much attention here. - If you follow the free-mod proposals in the bottom, the pool sizes will also allow for DT, no-mod and free-mod to be different sizes. - Don't use 3 tiebreakers*, almost noone practices them. *This implies a situation where one TB is banned per team via privately PM'ing the ref, and !roll 2 is used if both teams ban the same TB
AR8 HD is overused and often unbalanced.
- I almost never see it in no-mod, not even in group stage, and it's often the one pick that always gets banned, since the avg. score is lower for the vast majority of teams.
DT is often too conventional and slow, especially in early stages.
- DT picks are often at a BPM that make them feel like a no-mod pick. Make them streamy or technical at a high BPM so they actually feel like DT maps.
Group stages nurse players too much.
- Teams should be able to play the maps, but FC'ing should be hard to do if you're a lower ranked player that isn't too diverse.
Free-mod is typically a practically useless category.
- Having mods be "free" to pick in any format from 2v2 and up is a problem, especially if only a select amount have to pick a mod at all. This makes maps very hard for mappool selectors to easily find, as they need to perfectly balance the map for it not to be favored towards a specific type of player.
- Having a free-mod pool that requires players to pick at least 1/2 (depends on 2v2/3v3/4v4) of each mod combination on the same map will make this category a lot scarier in practice than having no-mod players shine on maps that favor them too much, due to the map being a lot easier than the maps in the no-mod pool.
- Ideas would be: - 2v2: 1 player on ONLY Hidden, and 1 player on EITHER HR or HDHR. - 3v3: 1 player on ONLY HD, 1 player on ONLY HR and anything for the last player. - 4v4: 2 players on ONLY HD, and other 2 players on EITHER HR or HDHR.
- For all of these ideas, it allows you make a pool mod favored, while still making the pool fair, if you decide to have a HD favored map, a balanced map and a HR favored map with a total free-mod pool size of 3. This also allows teams to utilize pocket players, that excel at specific skillsets, if you create a good pool.
- Also for 3v3, if you feel HDHR is too HR favored, you can opt to allow the third player to play no-mod.
- If you feel that this category change favors modded plays too much, you can opt to add an extra DT and no-mod map to balance it out.

Tournaments I've staffed in:
- Italy Draft Cup 2020 - RNG Tournament 2020 - Spork Cup 2018 (Hosted this ><) - I feel this tournament kind of helped "bring forward" changes to the free-mod rule in most tournaments (due to its forcing of HD and HR in a 2v2 and not allowing no-mod) - TV Size Tournament 2017 (?)
- Occasional help with late owc pools in 2018 and 2019 from doing (TONS of) replays and giving opinions after Denmark is kicked out of the tourney, as well as certain community tourneys
